If I had to guess now, I'd say I'll probably wait for the first price drop on the PS4. It really depends on when it gets its first must-have exclusive though. E.g. I bought my PS3 just before MGS4 released.

Microsoft could still win me over, but I'm not a fan of their current exclusives so they'd have to sign a few new first-party developers I'd say.

In the meantime PC gaming and playing old games will do me just fine.

When the Wii U, Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 are released this year or next, will you be one of these people who buy on launch day, or will you wait for the library to pick up and this generation to become obselete?

I personally am not upgrading my PS3 until a) It's cheap enough to buy with out bankrupting myself, and b) the PS3 stops getting games made for it.
Depends on launch titles.

If its in 2015 (which unfortunatley looks to be a reality), and the PS4 comes with GT6, then I'll buy it at launch, even if the console is hugely expensive, assuming I am aware and have put aisde some savings. Hopefully it'll have lots of other good games too, then factor in add-ons for the console ect, it could be very expensive, but then again, you get to play the console sooner and for longer (besides, playstation have this habit of bringing out awesome stuff, then realising 'oh shit' taking it off the shelves and replacing it with something cheaper and not as good).

Considering I play my PS2 more than I play the 360....

Also, no. Because they usually retail for near to a grand in New Zealand. Fuck, the PS3 DID! And unless the new consoles get new games, and not just shinier sequels, I think gaming in general can fuck off.

That depends, for everything but The Witcher 2, Metro 2033, and Battlefield 3 my GTX 580 gives me amazing FPS. If the 6XX series is an amazing improvement, I might be tempted to buy the most powerful single card in the line up. I really want to move up to a 1440p monitor and I just don't think a single 580 will cut it for BF3 at 1440. This time I'm not going to buy a reference cooler though...oh consoles...I don't do consoles.

I will wait and see how reliable the new Xbox will be, if its anything like the 360 I will probably avoid it until they sort it out. Not that I will hold my breath or anything, it took Microsoft years to even begin addressing the RRoD problems.

If the rumours about used game restrictions are true I may not even get one at all.

Recalling back to the early days of the Xbox 360, and how abominably glitchy it was, I'm gonna say wait, at least until something comes out not for the 360 that I really, really have to have right away.

Most new tech, in my experience, is overpriced, glitchy, and isn't long-established enough to offer enough new stuff to do. Time fixes all of those.

So probably a year, year and a half wait.

If the PS4 is announced with a new Final Fantasy game, and has full PS1/2/3 backwards compatibility, I'll buy it on launch. I probably won't buy a 720 because I've never gotten into the Xbox consoles. As for the WiiU, I'll wait until Metroid and Zelda are released for it before I purchase it.

I'd rather wait and then get a PS3 or 360 for a lower price. Hell, if they still have gamecubes or PS2s, they might be even cheaper.

I'll wait a few years, like I always do.

Devs usually continue releasing games on the old platform for about a year anyways.

Besides which, since I've got Skyrim it'll be at least four years until I need a new game ;)

I think we don't need a new generation yet, I'm too poor anyway after last and soon-to-be this year.

But for me, I might for one console and get the other one later, but the only thing I care about is that they can play the previous generation games and I can transfer the former generations memory onto the next one.

Xbox720 (Are they REALLY gonna call it that!), I might buy on launch, ONLY if, they have a decent amount of memory, can play previous gen games and can transfer the memory from my previous Xbox360 onto itself...wirelessly! (or not, also if it has new features)

PS4, Maybe later or not, depends if I get the new Xbox, if has to have to same reasons as above, but has a better hub, the PS3 hub is really hard to navigate. (or just takes a long time)

WII U, I'm gonna wait until they get some good games...and a good review!

Or I might just upgrade my PC (MY WALLET. D:), but that will cost a heap and will passed within a year.

...So please don't announce/replace/rumor any new gen consoles....just yet. (WIIu excluded)

I probably won't buy any console until it's on sale for a significant discount, or otherwise if there are a few games that I really want to play that end up as exclusives. I'm more of a PC gamer these days consoles just haven't been offering anything nearly interesting enough to overshadow the benefits of playing on PC.

I'd only upgrade early if it has backwards compatibility. That way, even if the launch titles turn out to be stinkers I can still play the games from the previous generation.

Steam has shoved consoles WAY out of my price range in terms of cost.

60 Bucks for an ok game?

I dunno...I could get 6-10 games for that price on steam. Sometimes the exact same games.

True full backwards compatibility would cause me to buy it Day 1 and then never ever look at price drops because I don't care.

But they won't do that because they don't like money.

I think I'll wait for 1. Price to drop (God kows the prices will be outrageous)
2. For all companies to fix any flaws or make any changes that need to be made.
3. For the next Gen to build a decent library.
4. For my friends to any of the consoles so I can try them out before buying any of them.

As a PC gamer I laugh at your puny console attempts to "upgrade". It makes me feel better about spending really ?2000 on my gaming rig!

If I was getting a 720 though, I wait and see what games were on it, buy more importantly, price.

My brother and loads of mates game on the 360, I think it still has plenty of life in it!

I seldom upgrade immediately as I prefer to an idea of the caliber of the unit after it's initial launch hype.

That said, it is extremely likely that I'll pick up a PS4 within 2 years of it's release, and possibly a Wii U within that time span as well so long as it either eliminates motion controls or vastly improves upon them.

I'm hesitant about the Xbox 720 because of it's history of hardware issues. If I should get one, it likely wouldn't be for another 4 years.

I should note that it's often a game that leads to my purchase of a console. Resident Evil 5 was my main reason to get the PS3 once I learned it wouldn't be released on Wii.
