If you have played Modern Warfare 2 within the past few months, you HAVE to have noticed the modding going down, If you haven't noticed, you must be playing with sock puppets. Speed lobbies, Aimbots, Tenth Prestige, All Titles and Emblems. And its not just MW2, ever since Microsoft put out the USB feature for the Xbox, its like MS is just bending over to modders. Not saying I am taking advantage of these exploits *shiftily looks side to side* but it has become a big part of gaming for a lot of people. So the question is: Do you care about modding, Does it influence your gaming experience, or have you just not noticed?

It may be because I just suck at most online FPSs and therefore dying more often than usual just looks like carelessness on my part, but I've never noticed it. But then, I only ever play TF2 and L4D. TF2 is pretty good about catching cheaters, and I only ever play L4D with my friends.

Its a big reason why I dislike PC gaming. Its on thing when its you using Morrownd mods for yourself, but when you cheat in a multiplayer enviroment...well, if I believed in Hell, Id believe in a special place for such people. (Assuming Satan is a gamer too)

The only modding I do is skinning, sound swapping, and HUD customization in TF2, and GUI customization in WoW.

Yeah, those people deserve the Aperture Science Hell.

The good modders are good. The mods who create CS:S maps and special servers where snow falls in the middle of dustbowl. What you're looking for are cheaters.

Do you mean Awesome Modders, who create content and fix games for single player or dedicated servers?

Or do you mean Asshole Modders, those who create advantages for themselves in competitive multiplayer?

the word your looking for is hacking, NOT modding. while modding isnt entirely incorrect to use, its also misleading as the same word is used to describe custom, user made content in games (primarily pc games).

Uh, Yea, I don't know when the definitions got crossed, but doing anything other than adding positive things (custom/personal/cool/nude content, rebalancing gameplay, etc) isn't modding, its just cheating. While modding is the most positive force in gaming, the idea of people thinking breaking a weapon's stats in their favor is anything short of being a shithead is confusing. Its not hacking, its not modding, its just being a little shit.

Exploiting is a decent enough term for it.

... Of course, microsoft does have a history of redefining words and concepts to fit their needs. 'DLC' implies the only thing you can download is what someone is charging money for. Folding "being a complete shithead" into "modding" does further the agenda of ending the PC platform.

But, of course, thinking even near the edge of the box these days is just 'tinfoil hat bullshit.'

Actually, (I am not a dictionary, but,) the term "hacking" is a derogatory word used to describe people that break into accounts or things of that like. Hacking is often used to describe modding, but they are not alike. Modding or modifying is simply changing the content of a game to influence it, making it harder or easier for the modder. Hacking is not equal to modding. I mod, and it pisses me off when people say that I am a hacker.

I don't really understand this thread, I've played many counter-strike (Prison-Break, Gungame), Half-Life (Gmod, Pirate Vikings and Knights) and Unreal Tournament mods (Strangelove, Monsterhunt, Bunnyhop) and they are all fantastic! Why would anyone select 'Yeah. It pisses me off?'

Do mods like pirates, vikings, and knights really piss them off? Really, what the hell?

I'm not sure there's much agreement on the usage of the word 'modding'.

As someone who loves mods for all sorts of PC games, I'm not sure I could vote or form an opinion on anything until that is clarified.

Yes I care about modding. I do it myself. Of course my mods are for mostly RPG type games.

Mods can add a lot to a game and most players seem to like them, at least they download them a lot.

Different strokes for different folks you know.

To be exact that's not accurate though. People that break into games are crackers, modifying the internal contents of a program/game/etc is hacking.

Modding is creating user-defined custom patches for a game/program/etc. (Although this is very loose.)

It really depends. Like I can't see how people could get agitated over something like Bartender in WoW.

Except in the context of the modded game-modes of MW2, like low grav intervention sniping. Good fun that.

You really have no idea what modding is. What you are talking about is not modding bu hacks and exploits. These [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=6296] are [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=1707] mods [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=1544] and [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=803] you [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=1507] should [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=2384] never [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=6293] ever [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=4488] confuse [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=5139] them [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=1565] again [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=2000] as you make modders look like hackers when they make free DLC for you. Also I think those are more than enough examples to give you an adequate view of what actual modding is in software terms anyway. I think a lot of people on this thread need to rethink what they define as modding and hacking as a lot seem to have the two horribly confused.

Dont overuse the word modding. What you described is nothing else than cheating.

Modding is adding new content to games or altering the current content for the benefit of community, like better models, higher-rez textures, new scenarios, difficulty tweaks etc. Damn you console gamers with your weird lingo that hurts the awesome communities that put their time and skills into making something constructive.

Damn, got in there before me. People who use hacks in games should be forced to play Hello Kitty Adventure for all eternity. Mods, on the other hand, are fantastic and the community that surrounds them are surprisingly generous and hard working.
