Modding is awesome. Look at Oblivion. Mods have made the game even more enjoyable than it was originally for so many people. Mods are cool with me.

I personally don't grasp modding. I have a few mates who game on PCs and love to mod. My flatmate will buy a game just to mod it, like he bought Oblivion and said it was more awesome once he added the 'cape' mod. Who cares?! It's a first-person game! And he recently bought Star Wars:TFU because he hoped someone would make a mod to allow for dismemberment. WTF is that? To me that is the perfect example of a person who doesn't enjoy games for what they are and instead just likes to fiddle around with them, and it annoys me half to death

I voted thinking of mods like Zombie Panic and Team Fortress, not that kind of modding.

I mod my games, but definitely DO NOT hack. For example, all my CSS guns aren't the boring old silver, they're wooden and gold-plated. All the people have more distinguishable clothing, too, the Terrorists are red and the CTs are blue. In TF2, almost every gun is modded to make it more comical, like a nailgun for the pistol, a prehistoric stone hammer for the wrench, a tennis racquet for the Sandman. It looks alot better, I don't see the problem with it.

This isn't about dictionary definitions.

If you make a new level/map customise the gun skins or change the player outfit then I'll call that modding.

Doing the shit with Modern Warfare that the OP likes I would say is hacking.

I mod, and it pisses me off when people say that I am a hacker.
If you class the Modern Warfare stuff as modding then I'll disagree and call you the name you deserve, 'Filthy Hacker!' If you make a machinegun look like a banana then you're a modder.

If you do the Modern Warfare shit then you're cheating, no way around that. People like you spoil the game.

Well, it doesn't bother me because Modding usually means something that is created that everyone agrees to play on for laughs and a good time. When one person creates a hack to ruin the playing experience for others, I have a problem with that. Usually most hackers really suck at the game and I'm able to take advantage of that despite the hacks.

Like this one hacker in cod4, a buddy and I stayed in the server to combat this guy, he had wall hacks and was able to shoot through almost everything except for floors. I remembered there was this one building with 2 entrances to a basement, but no way to pick us off without poking a head down the steps, which we were able to exploit because we'd be able to see him before he was able to poke his head under. Was able to beat a hacker, he left as soon as the round was over after calling us various names and insulting our mothers.

If some one creates a mod that alters gameplay, like a pac-man server for a shoot'em up game or something like that, that's cool as hell, or if some one decides to create a zombie mod, yeah, it's a good change of pace. I'll pop on those every now and then just to kick back and relax and be goofy.

It's like candy. Teachers always say that candy is ok if there's enough to go around the classroom. Same goes with modding, if everyone gets to join in on the goofy fun, then it's acceptable, if it's 1 person using mods to an advantage against other gamers then that's when they deserve the kick.

As many of people have said, there's a difference between "Modding" and "Cheating"/"Hacking". "Modding" usually refers to custom-made content that people created for the game. Cheating/hacking, on the other hand, usually involves modifying specific in-game variables (Variables = Amount of Health, Ammunition, Etc.) to give players an edge over what the game intended the player to have.

As for cheating/hacking, I'm against it because it basically ruins the game for everybody. However, modding is a bit of a different story. Like, WAAAY different story. I urge everyone who has Portal to go download Portal: Prelude [http://www.portalprelude.com/download.php#exe_1_1_5] right now. Before I find out where you live.

And its not just MW2, ever since Microsoft put out the USB feature for the Xbox, its like MS is just bending over to modders.
Thats kind of funny..
That was one of the reasons why they never did it originally.
Yet people just kept saying that it was because Microsoft wanted to have a monopoly (which they did, but doesn't mean the other reasons are not valid)
Now that they have finally listened to the demands of the public, they get flak for the entire reason why they did it in the first place.
The USB feature was a godsend for me, as it saved me loads of bandwidth transferring games and shite between mine and my brothers xboxs.

Modding in multiplayer? I hate it.
I refuse to use any sort of mods to try and gain something in a game, like an advantage over someone else.
People who use aimbots are just compensating for the fact that they can't aim.
People who become 10th prestige and/or mod their gamerscore make the entire purpose of getting to that point (high GS or 10th prestige) redundant. It is to show how much you have achieved from playing games or that game. But modding it just shows that you are impatient and immature.

But, eh.
I just wait for the next microsoft crackdown, cause i am perfectly safe from it all.

While I think modding in the sense you are referring to shouldn't be done I don't think all modding is bad. Modding so you have an advantage while playing a game online just so you can be 'best' is a waste of time and shows that you need to cheat to win. But some modding I enjoy, like Gary's Mod and other things created to entertain rather than to cheat.

You're honestly lumping amazing mods like Mechwarrior: Living Legends, NeoTokyo, Kotor 2's Restored Content Mod, even the original Counterstrike or Team Fortress with kids who modify game files to cheap at games?

Because we call those cheaters and hackers, it has nothing to do with what we generally consider 'mods'.

And yes, I hate cheaters and hackers. I love mods though, moddb is one of my most visited sites.

Ive just noticed that a lot of players are getting that[/I] good - ive not noticed any bot help on their parts...

See, This is what happens when virgins with no life hardcore gamers get too good at a game. It spoils it for the more casual player.

--

I like mods for single player games, I appriciate the time and effort put into them, But Multiplayer gaming mods? It depends.

Modifying a Multiplayer game to plan at a lan party to create a special gametype with your friends = good
Modifying a Multiplayer game because you are overcompensating for your small penis lack of aim = Go die in a fire.

modding rules period. modders the good ones at lest rock the world in that they spend hours or weeks making games like oblivion and fallout 3 worth playing.

hackers and exploiters that use programs to give them an edge in multiplayer suck and should be executed.

Modding in the sense of unfair hacks, I dislike.

Modding in the sense of adding modifications to a game- I run my Morrowind with at least 100. Once I get a good video card again, I'll run my copy of Oblivion with more most likely.

Holy shit no. There's a very large difference between a modder and a cheater; the latter being what the OP is describing.

Well, I know a few people that have had their consoles modded, and it allows them to play burnt games. Nothing wrong with that. But on the subject of aimbots and whatnot, I don't usually play online, so doesn't really affect me.

Nothing wrong with modding in and of itself, it's when it invades servers where people don't want it is when it becomes a problem.

If people want to start a private game or server up where they can't earn achievements, ranks, or other things like that and mod, then that's completely fine. Everybody there wants to be part of a modded game.

But if some asshole joins a game and gives himself a mod that makes him insta-kill everybody or something and pisses other people off, then that's a problem.

I hate it when people go "oh my shit, modding is bad, people cheat and it pisses me off" without recognizing that's not the only thing it's used for. It's extremely narrow minded to think like that, and that's unfortunately the approach a lot of people and developers seem to be taking, especially with console games. I remember when a lot of people starting discovering how to get past Halo 3's strict anti-modding code and making a lot of modded gametypes and maps and began playing them in custom, private games, and everybody started getting mad at them. Why? They weren't boosting their way up to the top of the ranks, they weren't bringing their mods into servers where it wasn't wanted, and if they did, they should have rightfully been banned or punished.

Hmmmm. I guess all of you consider "modding" is just PC. Hacking is console wise. never thought of myself as a hacker, too derogatory. Well. Thanks for the input.
Nothing is too derogatory to describe people who cheats in multiplayer games.

There is some amazing mods out there though. Like Project Reality for BF2 and PVK2 for HL2.
Stuff like CS and TF also started out as mods but the devs of those mods got snatched up by valve.
