If you have played Modern Warfare 2 within the past few months, you HAVE to have noticed the modding going down, If you haven't noticed, you must be playing with sock puppets. Speed lobbies, Aimbots, Tenth Prestige, All Titles and Emblems. And its not just MW2, ever since Microsoft put out the USB feature for the Xbox, its like MS is just bending over to modders. Not saying I am taking advantage of these exploits *shiftily looks side to side* but it has become a big part of gaming for a lot of people. So the question is: Do you care about modding, Does it influence your gaming experience, or have you just not noticed?
You really have no idea what modding is. What you are talking about is not modding bu hacks and exploits. These [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=6296] are [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=1707] mods [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=1544] and [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=803] you [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=1507] should [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=2384] never [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=6293] ever [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=4488] confuse [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=5139] them [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=1565] again [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=2000] as you make modders look like hackers when they make free DLC for you. Also I think those are more than enough examples to give you an adequate view of what actual modding is in software terms anyway. I think a lot of people on this thread need to rethink what they define as modding and hacking as a lot seem to have the two horribly confused.
Damn, got in there before me. People who use hacks in games should be forced to play Hello Kitty Adventure for all eternity. Mods, on the other hand, are fantastic and the community that surrounds them are surprisingly generous and hard working.
Well comeone need to set him straight. I hate when people think that mods are hacks. I can understand certain misconceptions but I have never understood this one and I don't think that I ever will.

Depends on what kind of modder(?) it is, if it's one that create maps and such I have no problem with it, People that makes aimbot with more can go die in a fire pit(also these kind of people isn't modders...) T.T.

What I know, some developers sue hackers for changing there codes... But never seen a hacker found guilty :s

I have been known to use soft-mods (UI mods for WoW being a prime example)
But I don't generally touch hard-mods.

(Though, I have been known to use the Valhalla mod for Diablo II, but that thing is epicsauce ^.^)

Flawed question is flawed, as many of the posters above have already pointed out.

Modding is one excellent way of keeping a game fresh and alive for their fanbase. Hacking is one way to ruin it for others.

It pisses me off, I just got done with a hacked game tonight I should have left after the 20th time a knife didn't kill someone I just knifed 5 times, Marathon, lightweight, commando all pro, akimbo vector, .44 with tac knife, and I couldn't knife a single person on the enemy team, you'd shoot them and they'd just keep running.

reported every one on the opiset team cause they seemed to be running a party.

Personally I like modding when it's in a controlled evironment where everyone has the same mods, this is where dedicated servers and PC games really stand out... but when you start exploiting or cracking to gain advantage over others, well, I can't help but feel a little pity that those people are so bad at the game that they need to break the system to win.

As for the whole hacking, modding, cracking debate... well, if you make a modification you are modding if you write code you are hacking (yes to us software engineers hacking is just writing code it's not breaking into anything and what not, usually it's a colloquialism you'll frequently hear this bug fix was a dirty hack) and if you break a system you are cracking.

Modded controllers or modded games?

Both are on the down-turn.

BTW, don't confuse console modding with PC game modding, the first one being cheating, the second one making the game different, such as in Fallout 3, where a mod adds a water filter you can buy for your house, where as a console mod would make you have unlimited ammo.

For the record.

I love modding, what you describe isn't really modding and this Mr said it more or less:

[HEADING=1]Modding does not mean cheating[/HEADING]
Multiplayer mods can be amazing, Team Fortress started out as a mod so I don't get how modding can be a bad thing.

Don't start calling 'hacking', 'modding'. They have been separated years ago for good reason. Dictionary definitions of these terms mean fuck all in gaming slang.

Actually, (I am not a dictionary, but,) the term "hacking" is a derogatory word used to describe people that break into accounts or things of that like. Hacking is often used to describe modding, but they are not alike. Modding or modifying is simply changing the content of a game to influence it, making it harder or easier for the modder. Hacking is not equal to modding. I mod, and it pisses me off when people say that I am a hacker.
hacking actually is the right word according to the dictionary definition.

Computers . to devise or modify (a computer program), usually skillfully.
this is exactly what your refering to. "modding" as you call it is adding in some code to run in the background on a client machine (ie, the computer or console your playing on) to give said person an unfair advantage, whether it be speed hacks, wall hacks or even guns that fire rockets at 50 rps with unlimited ammo. by its dictionary definition this is hacking.

but either way, you have to choose your wording wisely. modding and hacking can both be used here, but since modding is a commonly used term for custom, user made content and hacking is typically used for cheating in online games hacking would be the better word to use here, not modding.

Except in the context of the modded game-modes of MW2, like low grav intervention sniping. Good fun that.
well there are exceptions to every rule of course.

Hmmmm. I guess all of you consider "modding" is just PC. Hacking is console wise. never thought of myself as a hacker, too derogatory. Well. Thanks for the input.

You mean hackers? Modding is pretty benign, hacking, on the other hand, can go die in a fire.
