It really depends on what kind of RPG we're talking about, to be honest. In MMO's, i'll generally play as a priest/cleric/shaman, in a Top Down RPG i tend to gravitate more to actual mages and in third person im more of an archer type. One thing's for sure though, I prefer being ranged to melee :).

I'll usually go warrior on my first time through any sort of game, be it tabletop or computer based, because they're pretty easy to play and almost never not fun. That said, pretty much any non-first run I'll be a mage. Focused heavily on fire. And more fire.

Either the Knight/Guardian/Paladin or Rogue/Assassin/Thief. Either way I prefered to be a melee character than those using range like a ranger or a magic user. I generally prefer defence over offence (why I don't pick beserker) or maybe not so heavy armour apperance like the thief.

Ignoring the fact that I cannot stick to a single thing and will try everything at least once, I generally go for warriors. Sword bigger than yourself and heavy enough to be a shield, armour made from the last dangerous thing you slew. Although where possible, I like to have a little background of being a blacksmith and dabbling in fire magic for convenience, making me a sort of brutish spellsword. After that, ranger and paladin are both nice.

All magic all the way. I want to nuke enemies at full power and I'd prefer not to have to diverge into more survival things, like sneakiness or vitality. That's why I look into things like potions for better replenishment of mana and maybe some escape spells. Morrowind was a game that really fit well with what I like and how I play.

I'm not really sure, as I've never played much in the ways of video game RPGs and even less in the way of tabletop. Me and a friend that was trying to set up a tabletop game did have a crack at making a character for me. Ended up with an alcoholic mechanic that could fix anything mechanical at all. Vehicles, weapons, generators, anything and also hold his own in a brawl or fire-fight. But only while drunk. And as we were set in some kind of wasteland/crapsack world, good booze would be hard to come by. He was able to make moonshine though, which had side-effects of 1/6 chance of temporary blindness and 1/200 chance of permanent blindness.

I think at some point we just completely forgot about the rules of the game and were just riffing on this idea. It was good fun, but we never got round to playing!

Well in Skyrim I was a warrior with some magical ability, and in Fallout NV I was a gun-slinger with the most powerful rifles and shotguns one could get, but who was also a scientific genius, so I guess I tend to take the middle road haha.

Warrior I suppose. I remember playing NWN2 and not knowing a clue about the classes and stuff, and I ended up being a warrior because it was the easiest to understand at the time.

Warrior/Berserker if not sword and shield type guy with medium or light armour. I prefer being able to deal so much hurt so quickly that they can barely lay a finger on me.

Poll is missing: Necromancers classes and Spellbinders/Mesmers.
It's invalid.

Honestly, I'm all over the place is term of classes (except for the pure mage) as each game brings particular annoyances and quirks, that while make fun in one game, not quite as much in another.

im saddened by the lack of ranger buddies on here haha, but yeah rangers/hunters are my favourite, they usually have a few skills i like, things like traps, and good range is always fun, especially when a game doesn't gimp it too much. having a pet can also be fun, but i would rather it be a choice then a mandatory thing.

The ratio of mage responses in the poll to posts about being a mage shows how introverted we magic users really are.

I would like to repeat what others have already said about this poll missing the Necromancer class (I personally like to kill my enemies by spawning undead rather than by frying them till they are as well done as the steak I occasionally have) and when magic is missing aka Fallout I am smooth-talking scientific sniper (which is quite a paradox because how can I be great at talking with people if I almost never approach them because I am too busy sniping or reading up on the latest advancements in plasma weaponry or robotics)

I like casting spells, but I also like shiny armor and swords, so magic/combat hybrid it is. If that option doesn't exist, it'll probably be mage, but not all the time.

I don't like playing as a druid or bard much, though. I'd prefer either a multi/dual classed character or make a mage able to cast spells while wearing armor (when applicable).

If it's the general archetype, then archer. It's just a shame that they're usually not given as much attention by developers as melee fighters or mages.

However, my favourite specific class is the bard. Pretty mediocre in combat usually, but there's no other class that's as fun to me for general role-playing.

Priest Full support if possible yay !, it can be a bit hard to play cause you now if the party get its ass handed back its your fault , but that's the beauty of playing a healer.

"I command the infinite power of magic. The forces of the universe bow before me, begging to be permitted to serve. The elements dance about my fingertips, impatiently awaiting their targets while I draw forth servants from planes of limitless beauty and terrible horror. Lead becomes gold at the lightest of touches, the ground reshapes where I step, and the minds of my foes shatter at my slightest glare. I command the knowledge of the ages, whispered into my ear by the cosmos itself, and no illusion can fool my eyes."

is usually cooler to me than

"I hit the monster with a piece of metal! Harder than the last time, even!"

Not that a warrior can't be cool, but it's usually only to test a quick idea in my case, rather than a favored archetype. I'm also not usually fond of battlemages, even when they're objectively better than pure mage (which is rare in the games I play, but not always). See, I not only like the power of the wizard, I adore the trappings; the robes, the starves, the books upon books. All of it clicks for me. So yeah, go mages.

I've always enjoyed playing the Warrior archetype in my RPG's, but more of a good knight almost exclusively with two handed weapons because that's how I roll.

Dual wielding sometimes an option in terms of better damage output, I usually just stick to what I like which in most cases are Two handed Swords or Axes.

If the rpgs a dungeon crawler, I usually play as a mage simply because it makes boss battles (especially in games like Torchlight 2) way easier - plus the AOE spells usually mess up mobs of enemies like nobodies business.

But in Skyrim/Oblivion, I always usually play as a warrior class (sometimes with support magic thrown in) because I always found magic in Elder Scrolls games to be kind of awkward to use, especially because you don't get extremely destructive spells into way later in the game.

To be honest, the lack of stereotypical RPG archetypes is one of the reasons why I loved the Fallout series, because it allowed you to design your own playstyle with ease (except in the original ones, because it was pretty hard to make a character that didn't just use guns). For instance, in New Vegas, I made a character that was all about maxing out his critical hit chance - reached 31% without energy weapons, 41% with laser weapons, and 35% with the holorifle.
