I'd like to play as a magic character, but in games the wizards and their magic spells are unbelievably boring. That recent Critical Intel article pretty much said it all about game magic.

Barbarianzerker all the way.

Keep your guile and magicks, brute force and fury will always win the day.

I'm surprised my choice had the lowest number of votes. (Hipster status activated)

Mages that specialize in specific areas, those are my favorite to play. Necromancer, Summoner, etc. I love playing those types of caster. Never jack of all trades, just a master of one.

Depends on the game, but I generally go for whichever class has the best ranged damage and or defensive skills.

Battlemage (heavy armour, axes and summoning magic) or Spellsword (medium armour, swords and damaging magic) for me. Mages are too wet and fighters too straightforward for my taste, but a well-worked blend of the two can be truly devastating.

I enjoy playing most all classes.

But I usually fall back on some kind of Fighter.
And depending on my mood I play a Berserker type or a Tank/Support type(I have taken to calling the Warlord Archetype).

And a close second as the Ritualistic magic user. I guess I prefer Magic being more of a mysterious thing that's more difficult to control and has a more subtle effect.

It's weird though because I used to be all about the Wizards and Magic Missiles when I was younger. I don't much care for them anymore.

Well it entirely depend on the game.

In isometric games such as Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale almost always play a wizard.
In games such as Dragon Age I will usually play a melee character simply because of the combat (I like the DnD mages alot more).

Beyond that I always balance my class choice with the NPC's I want to have in the party. That does however requier that I meta game.

I'm a bit of an oddity since I tend to prefer the stealth/magic hybrid archtype, using stealth and agility assisted with magic to help me bypass enemies (for example, in Skyrim I would focus on Archery, Sneak, and Illusion). If forced I will generally go pure stealth over pure mage (I find that generally speaking you will run out of mana/whathaveyou JUST when you are one spell away from killing everyone, then end up dead on the floor since all you have to defend yourself is a stick and some fancy underwear.

Necromancer wherever the option is available. I've had an obsession with Necro characters since Might and Magic and Diablo 2. Summoning and curses were far too much fun.

Other than the Necro it's without a doubt the cleric. I like to play supporting roles. :)

I just loved playing priest in ro, it's so frantic when you play as a priest in an area that it's supposed to be played with more than one priest...... /slur.

The main reason why I dont play guild wars 2 it's cause theres no healer... seriously screw you guild wars 2 you left me jobless xD.

what do you prefer to play as?!

:D
What about you? Why not put in your opinion?

OT: Definitely the rogue, I love the nimble thief types, add some magic to that and you have my favorite combination.
How coincidental :D I like nimble/agile types with magic too! :3 but I'm more of a fan of arcane archers instead of arcane rouges :p I don't like sneaking, I just like shooting things with a bow infused with awesome

In varies depending on the mechanics for video games, there really isn't one that goes over the other in the whole warrior/rogue/mage thing. Tabletops however, I do a lot more magic, for the fun of rping and the utility that comes with it.

In fantasy, high-magic settings... I tend to like jack-of-all trades classes. Bards are fun in D&D.

But I prefer higher tech settings, honestly... in which I prefer to play stealth specialists with a sideline in firearms.

Depends on the game.

Usually I prefer summoner though

So I put down Mage Specialist

It's what I did in:
Guild Wars 2
Oblivion
Not so much Diablo 2
Skyrim
It's what I try to do in Dwarf Fortress (damn I wish Necromancer towers were easier to enter and survive)

EDIT:
In games Like Fallout I would certainly like it more if they had added in some magic like abilities similar simply to make it more like a 3 class system. otherwise I usually play rouge

Uhhh...I can't decide. I do several of those choices effectively in a game.

I enjoy Hybrid classes, because honestly more options = great versatility = more fun.

also because, being an iron-clad melee beast that can also at the same time manipulate the forces that be using magic,is of course never tiring.

Battle Mage would be my favorite. Straight up warrior is too simplistic and boring. Mages alone are too squishy for my taste. I like a nice balance between the two.
To explore the infinite secrets of magic and unlock the chains of reality you can't spend time swinging metal sticks.

(Said with the most pretentious accent)

EDIT: If I didn't make it clear, pure Arcane Mage is always the way to go. The utility and power is topped by none other, and let's me let loose the inner snob.

Probably a knight/warrior variation. Mages never sat very well with me. Spells are very showy and sound cool but in the end you get stuck with half a repertoire of passive stat-altering spells and maybe one or two good projectile-based attacks which swap away your mana in a few secs.

I always play a warrior/barbarian/guy who carries big weapons and wears heavy armor the first time through to get a feel for the game.

Then I go back and proceed to make at least one of every other class.

I'm the worst altoholic you've ever seen.
