Eh, not worth it. I can already do this by hooking my wiimote to the PC, so it will still be no different than $140 DLC.

How's no?
Does no work for you?
That's a negative, Sargent.
Opposite of yes.

140 bucks? Seriously? What happened to that free DLC that Poral 2 was going to get?

Is this it? Free, provided we pay for an expensive-as-hell controller?
This is not the "Portal 2 DLC" referenced there. It's something that was announced back in January.

This however is a new direction, rather than appealing to the gamer who thinks skill comes with equipment, now they're moving towards capitalizing on the hardcore fans, just like that WoW mouse.
Sometimes... it does, better equipment such as surround sound for an FPS does help, I don't really know about new mice though, my standard issue Dell mouse does me fine.

Although I completely agree otherwise, its extortion, and they they know people will go out and buy this crap to try and get ahead at a game.

Now Valve is offering a motion to be used with their games. And this is the Escapist, so I doubt anyone will call them out on it... if anything, I'm expecting showers of praise.

No, no this isn't that DLC they were talking about.

This DLC is only for PC, and only for people who buy the expensive-as-hell controller. The DLC they talked about before is coming in the form of free updates for the PC, 360 and PS3.

Also, this DLC wasn't designed by Valve. It was designed by Razer.

I never had a problem using the mouse and keyboard. Am I the only one who always thought those controls felt nice and exact? The same goes for controllers. I always feel pressing buttons is far more precise than flailing my arms around.

Ah the gaming mouse industry, it's practically extortion. I find it hilarious to see people flaunt their 100 euro mice when the best pro-Starcraft players use Microsoft mice they bought for 10 quid.

This however is a new direction, rather than appealing to the gamer who thinks skill comes with equipment, now they're moving towards capitalizing on the hardcore fans, just like that WoW mouse.

Still, at least you're getting a damn awesome game with it.
Urm....starcraft doesnt require precision such as an FPS does. Razer mice are generally marketed towards the fps/mmo crowd.

THIS IS A SCAM TO GET YOU TO PAY MORE MONEY FOR PORTAL NARM NARM NARM
Not exactly. The clear lack of effort that went into researching this topic also doesn't help.

Let me make this clear, There's no way this could possibly be an economically feasible strategy for Valve.

So why is Valve shelling out valuable R&D dollars to make a game for a clearly unpopular peripheral? To help the industry. Don't think of it as a game you have to get, but more like Wii Sports or whatever's on the Kinect. Valve is helping motion control peripherals get recognition in an industry where any other developer would ignore them and go for the Wii or the Move. There's no way this is economically advisable. It just seems like a nice thing to do for the PC industry.

If a big name like Valve is willing to spend money to publicize a motion control peripheral in an industry where all 3 consoles have a more popular version, they're going to convince other developers to consider this whole PC peripheral thing, perhaps alongside the Wii or the Kinect or the Move.

IMO I think it's pretty nice of Valve to lend this help to the often-overlooked peripherals industry. The Hydra is a beautiful piece of engineering that uses magnets instead of bluetooth or infrared, and, for once, gives you a motion controller with *gasp* DUAL ANALOGS! Why didn't you think of this, Nintendo? Sony? Anyone?

So this isn't a joke?...... WHAT THE HELL MAN! I'm so confused, this is like the ending to heavy rain all over again.
Seriously, it looks funky enough but 140 dollars? Surely you could fit the control scheme into the XBOX360 or PS3 interface without the motion control wank. Its not like portal has that many controls.

I don't understand why anybody would be angry or upset because some company made an entirely optional controller, and as incentive made some game levels to demo it.

This has nothing to do with Valve. This is Razer's product and Razer's development. What should Valve have done? Denied the company permission to make its controller?

That this article is being used to bash Valve or herald the end of the world is testament to the lack of literacy or just care in reading that many gamers have today.

So, if I don't buy this I can't get portal 2 dlc?
Bye portal.
Please read the article. This isn't 'the Portal 2 DLC'. This is Razer's product with Razer's own self made incentive to buy it. Valve have had nothing to do with it except having already made the game itself and being a retailer of Razer products.

It's clearly true, that old addage that the majority of people only read headlines, and the rest probably skim the article.
