Of course the DLC could have been done for all control types but Razer made the new levels and specifically to show off their new controllers. They have no other responsibility to the fans of Portal 2 than that.Mr.K. said:Well that may be motion controls at it's best but I got no use for it.
And that DLC could easily be done for all the control types(no doubt someone will mod it), but I understand they are trying to push a new market direction.
Sadly, we have to realise that these people didn't even read the article on the first page. They won't read some post on the third page.Somtaaw said:FYI people Valve didn't make the DLC Razor did.
This DLC IS NOT Valve made DLC. All Valve DLC will be free as it ALWAYS is.
First off so far they aren't getting much praise from reading all the comments here. Second Valve has nothing to do with this save the DLC. When Sixense was making the controller Valve saw it and was interested enough to endorse it. They did not make the DLC though the people making it did. So to be clear Valve only game them permission to make the DLC and had no other roll in it. It's also compatible with WAY more games than Portal 2 the title is incredibly misleading.Mr. Omega said:Now Valve is offering a motion to be used with their games. And this is the Escapist, so I doubt anyone will call them out on it... if anything, I'm expecting showers of praise.
There are actually something like 200 games it is currently compatible with. These include things like BF:BC2, Batman AA, Oblivion, Mount & Blade, CoD:BlOps, etc.Baresark said:This controller could be worth while.... if only they had more than one game for it. That just makes a cool, but way overly expensive copy of Portal 2. Crazy shit. Now, if this controller got more industry support, it could be worth it. I must confess, the Wiimote and Nunchuck combination was fun and worth while as long it was implemented properly (which it wasn't most of the time). It made FPS on the Wii a lot of fun, Like Metroid Prime for exampe.
More support and you got me.
What I wanted to say, well said. Also it's not even a DLC it's a free incentive that comes with an optional product, don't like it don't get it.TiefBlau said:THIS IS A SCAM TO GET YOU TO PAY MORE MONEY FOR PORTAL NARM NARM NARM
Not exactly. The clear lack of effort that went into researching this topic also doesn't help.
Let me make this clear, There's no way this could possibly be an economically feasible strategy for Valve.
So why is Valve shelling out valuable R&D dollars to make a game for a clearly unpopular peripheral? To help the industry. Don't think of it as a game you have to get, but more like Wii Sports or whatever's on the Kinect. Valve is helping motion control peripherals get recognition in an industry where any other developer would ignore them and go for the Wii or the Move. There's no way this is economically advisable. It just seems like a nice thing to do for the PC industry.
If a big name like Valve is willing to spend money to publicize a motion control peripheral in an industry where all 3 consoles have a more popular version, they're going to convince other developers to consider this whole PC peripheral thing, perhaps alongside the Wii or the Kinect or the Move.
IMO I think it's pretty nice of Valve to lend this help to the often-overlooked peripherals industry. The Hydra is a beautiful piece of engineering that uses magnets instead of bluetooth or infrared, and, for once, gives you a motion controller with *gasp* DUAL ANALOGS! Why didn't you think of this, Nintendo? Sony? Anyone?
If you go on the Razor site, they have a whole list of compatible games, not just Valve.icame said:I would too, assuming it begins to be supported by other high profile games, and not just valve ones.SupahGamuh said:Well, the controller is pretty close to a modified Wiimote + nunchuck, so, people praising this thing and hating the Wiimote would be lying to themselves. I'd still pick one of these though. For the record, I loved the Wiimote... when it was well implemented, like in Metroid Prime Trilogy.
Don't mind him, he has a tendency to jump on anything PC related just to spout hate without reading anything.80Maxwell08 said:First off so far they aren't getting much praise from reading all the comments here. I don't think you understand the definition of scam. That or you're sore from all the self-entitlement. I suppose the new Ferrari is a scam too. Damn them and their expensive cars!MajorDolphin said:Another scam designed to milk the fans of a game franchise...
Losing customers? You know they've never been worth more money as a company, right?samsonguy920 said:This is work Valve has done on new content that is strictly for a new-fangled controller that costs more than average gamers can afford. What other games also use this controller? Quite a lot actually, but I have my doubts you get anything extra except feeling like you are playing Wii on your PC.
Lately Valve doesn't feel like the company it used to be, and instead is just trying to get money for money's sake without putting out decent quality or anything new. Don't get me wrong, I love Portal 2. JK Simmons alone makes that game worthwhile. But it is a sequel to Portal just about as Left 4 Dead 2 is a sequel to Left 4 Dead 1. As in maybe but just not quite.
If Valve wants to pander to the rich then they can, but they better be prepared to start losing other customers.
And by the way, that controller is gimmicky shit.
And the replies on this thread remind me of this:Palademon said:I am reminded of the very last panel in this VG Cats comic
It's the Wii, only nowhere near as mainstream, and only a controller.

Not true, as mentioned above you can see that Razer sponsors a lot of SC tournaments like TSL. That doesn't mean that you need a precision mouse for it though, FPS games yes, but a lot of pro gamers would opt for low sensitivity mice <1000 dpi for precision.Leviano said:Urm....starcraft doesnt require precision such as an FPS does. Razer mice are generally marketed towards the fps/mmo crowd.Sevre said:Ah the gaming mouse industry, it's practically extortion. I find it hilarious to see people flaunt their 100 euro mice when the best pro-Starcraft players use Microsoft mice they bought for 10 quid.
This however is a new direction, rather than appealing to the gamer who thinks skill comes with equipment, now they're moving towards capitalizing on the hardcore fans, just like that WoW mouse.
Still, at least you're getting a damn awesome game with it.
Not to mind the fact that the article doesn't mention that it's Hydra themselves making the DLC, so they're just promoting their product, and Valve are letting them. Even if Valve did make the content, I don't really see anything wrong with it, but I guess people will get butthurt over anything. Well, not so much "I guess" as "I'm full sure".Andy of Comix Inc said:This article is dangerously hyperbolic. Really, "buy Razer Hydra, get some bonus Portal 2 content" really doesn't sound bad, does it? But "Have Portal 2? Buy Razer Hydra for some shitty maps!" ...that's grounds for nerd rage of the highest order. Not smart.
It's not even DLC, in that regard. It's more of a mod. A mod made by creators of a piece of hardware showing off their hardware in increasingly redundantly gimmicky ways. But the article, of course, paints the picture of, "want more of Portal 2, which people have criticized for being too short? $140 for it!! ...it comes with cool hardware, I guess, but more Portal 2! Grr, Valve, crafty bastards, perhaps!"Outright Villainy said:Not to mind the fact that the article doesn't mention that it's Hydra themselves making the DLC, so they're just promoting their product, and Valve are letting them.
