Also, the companion cube is back!
That box in screen 7 isn't a campanion cube, it's a new puzzle device. Notice that it doesn't have the hearts on the side that the origional cube had?

That's a Weighted Pivot Cube, as can be seen in a gameplay video (thermal discouragement beam) in this thread: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.206293-The-Portal-2-E3-Demo-Will-Give-You-a-Headache?page=1

To everyone whining about Valve putting memes into theri game; check the actual picture, and see that it isn't the companion cube, first!

The screenshots looks gorgeous! I just hope there's not too many self-referential jokes.
They said they were keeping them to an absolute minimum because they're sick of the old jokes themselves. I know for sure their won't be any cake.

Just so you know, the Portal dev team has promised that they're not going to bring back any reference of a certain cake. Coulton is also writing up a new song and has promised not to bring back 'Still Alive'. Apparently they're even more tired of the memes than you are...
Well, for every time you've heard Still Alive, JoCo's heard it fifty. For every time you've heard the cake meme, any random Valve employee down to the janitors has heard it a hundred. Imagine you heard the cake meme that many more times and then someone asked you if you wanted to make another game involving it. It's not so much a surprise that they're avoiding it as it is a given.

It's funny how many people don't get the joke of the cube. I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad.

Cubie, you're alive! Come here.

*hug*

By the way, the game screenshots look very promising, I think Valve's got another great game in their hands.

Okay, so I agree with the "it's just a box with a heart on it that other people took as a real friend, but I didn't because I'm sane. big deal." crowd. I just enjoy that image.

Like I said on PCG:

People are asking for a new engine why, exactly?
I can't figure it out either. I mean come on, this isn't that awful GameByro thing that they keep using for new Fallout games. The Source engine seems to be doing quite well despite its age. If it works and Valve can keep doing awesome things with it (which they clearly can), leave it alone.

Well I guess companian cube is *puts on sunglasses* Still Alive.
YYEEEAAAAAAAAHHH!!!
That wasn't even a pun. That's -1 internet for using that annoying meme in the first place, and another -1 internet for using it incorrectly. You just lost two internets.

If these are real, I'm more interested in the final picture... Are we going to have to go out to sea or something? And if so... well, hopefully someone's made the device waterproof.

Ah, the (already known) return of the companion cube. It'll be interesting to see how we'll have to use it this time, with all the new mechanics involved.

I'm actually most interested by #10 & #13. #10 seems like it might be a lobby or entrance to the Aperture Science building, which could be interesting to see. As for #13... I have no clue. Maybe the old dry-dock of the Borealis? Those floating spheres are the most curious thing...
I guess we'll find out what it is in April. :3

I can't help but not care, Skyrim has taken all my enthusiasm.

It's like receiving a cookie after being granted a huge cake.

The emotional connection to the cube is pretty understandable. From the get-go portal makes it very, very clear that you're all alone. there's no whacky side-kick. theres no little girl hiding out in the ventilation system talking about how they only come at night. There's just you, Chell, and you don't even have a background or personality. Theres is 0 human element in the game. Glados is identified as a machine as soon as you hear her, due to her 'bugging out' (Insert town of origin here, etc). Basically every game and story we've experienecd before portal has had very human elements, and by the time we reach the companion cube in Portal a part of us is very much feeling the void in the lack of human elements. Then Glados tells us things that humanise the cube; the implication that it won't hurt you (It could, but chooses not to), the fact that it has a heart symbol on it, almost universally representing an emotional touch. The cube isn't alive, it isn't conscious. It's just a box - the player projects feelings onto the cube because the game has built you up to a point where you are damned near desperate for anything to find emotional attachment to in the sterile apature labs. Valve knows this, otherwise it wouldn't have made you kill the thing.

So go ahead and express your joy at seeing the Cube return; you're only human.
