I find it somewhat ironic that despite the topic being English, and based in Australia.

Neither of those places can get the reward. :S

Quick question for everyone complaining - do you think we're not letting you enter out of spite, or something? Do you really think we're just so ignorant that we say to ourselves, hey, we could let half of our audience in on this really cool event, but let's just not? I certainly understand why you're frustrated, but the comments in this thread seem to indicate that you think we're doing this on purpose just to piss you off, or something.
We don't think that you're doing it just to piss us off. We're just a lil pissed at the fact that we can't get one. Or, if you're like me, you like to take the mick now and again. =] Anyway, shouldn't the fact that all of the international Escapists are iritated that we can't get some free merchandise be a good thing? All it shows is that you have a load of people who are dedicated to the site and that you have a substantial fan-base.

Made the comment, saw the US & Canada only term, hastily deleted my comment to save my Escapist anonymity :)

Lame "Must be living in US or Canada" rule is lame.

You can send stuff in the mail to other places you know.

Awwww, crap. I already put my comment on the Facebook page and now I realize that it's US/Canada only. It's the same thing with nearly 90% of my Facebook pages which post giveaways/competitions. Facebook is international but giveaways/competitions rarely are and that is what really frustrates a cannot-enter-fan. Well, it's not a big loss and good luck to those who can enter.

A person can purchase something, pay the import tax, and ship it off, yes. But a contest is different. When sending something of dollar value as a "prize" from one country to another, all sorts of rules and taxes come into play. So, while I could purchase a shirt and ship it to you friend to friend, you winning something is a completely different situation. That is why our contests are only open to residents of US and Canada, not because we just "don't want to pay shipping," as some people have suggested.

There are other considerations, too. Let's say, just for the sake of argument, that tax wasn't an issue at all, and anyone in the whole world could win. Two people win the same shirt - one lives in Ireland, the other in New Zealand. The shirt is worth, let's say, $10. Shipping from the shirt distributor will be far more to the winner in New Zealand than it would to the winner in Ireland so now. Let's say it's $10 to Ireland and $20 to New Zealand. In effect, those two contestants have now won prizes of unequal value and we are officially running an unfair and unbalanced contest.

Now, I can't quote you the specific laws and I don't begin to know every last nuance of the problems inherent in running contests, but I do know that many sites I've worked for don't even bother with them at all, simply because the legalities are such a pain in the ass.

One thing that really bothers me. Yahtzee is an Englishman. He currently resides in Australia. And yet, this competition is, yet again, only open to people living in North America? Not only is that fairly silly and illogical anyway, but it's also completely unfair on everyone who isn't in North America. Normally I get annoyed when there are US-only contests on this site, but I shrug them off and forget about them. This one though? Completely unfair, and I'm exceptionally disappointed right now. It's always the same old story, every single time...
There are a lot of laws regarding international contest which make them difficult to do, don't blame ZP blame the law law makers.

Perhaps if Spinwhiz or someone else were to explain exactly why we can't enter and point out the exact laws regarding competitions for us to read, then it wouldn't seem so unfair...
I agree it would be nice if someone did tell us why we can't enter.
But, its my right as an Englishman to feel both mildly annoyed and inconvenienced :p
Feeling annoyed, that I get. People calling us dickheads or telling us to fuck off...that's not so cool.

Like so many others, I'm disappointed at - as a Brit - not being able to enter this contest. Perhaps in the future, these contests could have "(US/CAN ONLY)" in the headline so we don't have to bother reading the contest spec?

That said, I understand that the US has some strange and silly competition laws, and whatnot. But it's still disappointing for the vast majority of the world's population thatisn't American. Perhaps non-American contestants could at least get a badge or something?

I understand that sucks, but we get left with the feeling an unfair and unbalanced community where how much one contributes doesnt come into play but exclusive prizes are handed out based off geographic location. Its frustrating thats all.

For the record though the people here hurling abuse should be ashamed, its not like your doing it on purpose anybody with sense understands its just the way it is. We just have to deal with it being unfair.

You'll get no argument on this end. It absolutely sucks, is totally unfair, and we wish it didn't have to be that way.
