The jailbreaking of the iPod disagrees with you.
The jailbreaking of the iPod doesn't result in games being stoled from the app store. Hacking a PS3 does. Jailbroken iPods get their own custom apps. Hacked PS3 play stolen games. Huge difference my friend.
...

No, I think you've got it confused. These hacks were all about implementing "Other OS". It's also allowing a customer to do what he wants with his paid for merchandise. But trying to blur the line of hacking with "stolen" games is a little dubious at best when they accomplish different goals.

Those of you who actually want this guy to lose, you need to understand something which I thought was common sense, but apparently not: This isn't about "hacking" or "copyright infringement". This is about an individual's rights to use HIS property that he OWNS and PAID FOR in whatever way he wishes to.

Let me put it in another perspective: I have a legal right to chuck my Boombox out my window if I really want to. It may void the warranty, but they can't sue me for doing it. And they shouldn't BE ABLE to sue me for doing it. If you think that he should lose this case for software-modding his PS3, then by your logic, I deserve to be sued for putting decals on my laptop, or for putting refrigerator magnets on my refrigerator. By YOUR logic, it should be illegal to disassemble a comic book and laminate the pages. By YOUR logic, it should be illegal to underline sentences for future reference in your favorite book. By YOUR logic, it should be illegal to get a custom paint job for your car. By YOUR logic, it should be illegal to sew your own outfits for a toy doll!

So to put it simply: Supporting Sony's decision to sue this man for modding a PS3 is the same as supporting Barbie if they sued a little girl for putting unofficial outfits on her doll.

Know what? I'm not even going to bother to say it.

Okay, I'll say it anyway.

[HEADING=1]Nobody wins in the end.[/HEADING]

No matter what the results of the lawsuit, nobody wins. The hackers still hack, Sony still updates, pirates still pirate, and the consumer gets royally screwed with DRM anywhere the wind blows.

So to Geohot I say piss off, I see you as an obnoxious jerk. Just let us play our games.

To Sony I say piss off, let them do their thing, it's (supposedly) legal anyway.

To the pirates I say fuck off the most of all. Without you guys, we wouldn't be in this god forsaken mess.

Screw this lawsuit, screw the hackers, screw Sony, screw the pirates, and by god screw the consumers because lord knows we're already screwed! I don't care who wins at the end because nobody will.
Pretty much what I was thinking. Geohot wins? Pirates and hackers are going to ruin it for us. Sony wins? They can continue to bully us around (pulling a Darth Vader by altering the deal was pretty douchey). Again to pirates I say: You are the reason we can't have nice things.

And by the way, no blaming Geohot for the lawsuit. Sony sued HIM, he didn't sue THEM. He's only defending himself. That's why he's called the Defendant. It's not like he WANTED to fight this battle. They gave him no choice. And no, he shouldn't have expected it to happen. People have a right to use their own belongings how they wish, as long as they're not jamming their belongings through people's skulls. Geohot should have been perfectly safe, and this case should be thrown out for the fact that it's ridiculous.

One sequel I'd be happy to see is Metal Arms 2 though

Just realiized thats completly irrelevant oh well I mean that no one will be ambitious now that the PS3 is out of the picture because everyone is going pirating

ok to be fair if it used to let you put what ever OS you wanted on it then sony got greedy and took it away. While i myself have no reason to put a different OS on my PS3 i reserve the right to do so. Hell microsoft had this happen with the 360 mods and that was fucking hardware all you do is void the warenty and go on with your life. Hope this guy wins and wins big.

I believe one thing that people aren't understanding or rather, may not know, is that, if Geo wins the lawsuit, it doesn't mean hackers will be able to roam free. Sony would be allowed to ban them from using PSN for hacking a game since it is cheating. If Geo wins, it only means people can hack their PS3s and use them for whatever they want. It does not, however, mean they can do whatever they want in the online gaming setting. For example, you could boost your PS3 to use any OS you want, be an upgraded media player, and many other things but the second you get online with a hack that alters gameplay for others online, they can ban you from PSN or the game can ban you from their servers.

It's like a lot of people have said about Valve; they have very easily limited cheating in games. You don't go into a match on TF2 or L4D wondering if people are going to be using aimbot.. it's all a matter of the game companies monitoring the servers or programming protection into the game. The ruling in this case has nothing to do with online play- it relates only to what you can do with the console by itself. The console itself and the PSN are two separate parts when it comes to this.

if sony wins, someday you may get sued by blendteck for blending ice in one of their blender that states in the manual that it is not to be used for blending ice.

Wow, this thread is so angry.

I'm gonna toss my hat in with the people looking for a middle-ground; neither side should win this one completely

OK... 11 pages and a whole lot of opinions. I'm (chaotic) neutral in this, but...

What I can't understand is how the hell doesn't he break the law by ignoring the EULA?

Nobody will win in the end.
But Geohot seems like a bigger dick so I will go with Sony.

Ok, so when you go to the store, you read and sign a contract from Sony that you can't do any of that stuff?
The act of purchasing the console is you signing the contract. Its not that hard.
Yeah, and every time you go and buy a Nintendo product you sign up for the Japanese military. It's not that hard.

I don't blame you. In fact, I think I'm joining you on that one. I said a similar thing on page 8, came back and read up to page 11 and I'm still on the fence with this one. Personally, I think its a lose/lose situation and I don't want to support neither.

Though people putting this Goedude as the messiah, however I don't think he's the messiah, I think he's a very naughty boy :p.

At this point, both sides can suck it. Geohot for one, cause having the knowledge to hack and get free games for a console doesn't give you the right to hack it. I mean, what, the rest of the world that have to go to the store and buy the damn disc are the idiots? Why?

I couldn't care less about OS.

And then Sony cause instead of going after one person, they should be busy banning every single cheater from the PSN ever since the network was launched. They said they would do that. Haven't heard or seen anything on the subject this far.

That alone would make me choose any ps3 game over 360 (though I still say I pc over ps3 though).

Console makers need to start treating their devices as PCs. fail0verflow and Geohot are.
