Right, admitedly I am somewhat biased by only owning a PS1.
However, I consider it the better console, Sony worked out how to make a controller properly, none of this holding it different ways depending on the game thing, it had a disc drive, meaning it was also able to play music for those of us young enough to find this amusing.
Gamewise, there is no point denying that Nintendo had some amazing games for their consoles, Mario, Zelda, Starfox, SSB, etc. The PS1 in return had, Spyro (The first three were amazing), Crash Bandicoot (Again, first three, though Two was my favourite), Tombi! (Tomba! for you Americans), Medievil and, because most people rave about it, FFVII.
Now some people use the arguement of "Well, I still play my N64, derp derp." (Not even joking, that is a word for word quote of a friend of mine). Yeah, you do still play your 64, because you have too. That is the sole reason, Gamecube didn't use the expensive, unreliable game catridges, PS2 stil used discs, ergo; Backwards Compatiblity.
That may not be the strongest point ever, but when I had a craving to play Tekken 3 the other day, I could without having to fish out my old PS1 (Which I later learned was stolen a couple of years back). Then when I was at my friends house and we were craving SSB, we had to go find his console, the associated cords, the two working controllers. All of these things were in complete different areas of the house.

So for convinience, and what I suppose is Modern-ness, my vote goes to the PS1.

You know what this thread could really use? A poll. Oh well.

I liked the N64. The PS1 had more games but they weren't as consistently good as the N64's. Think about what games usually top most people's "Best games of all time" lists. LoZ:OoT,Mario 64, Goldeneye, they're all on the Nintendo 64, so it wins hands down.
i can list more ps1 games that were way better than those you just listed. shall i start?

resident evil series (3 games)
silent hill
tomb raider series (5 games)
tony hawk pro skater (only played the first 2)
die hard trilogy
twisted metal
metal gear solid
castlevania

sorry but no matter what people say, there's no chance that the n64 was the better system. you may prefer it more but its not a fact.

/thread
Hence the difference between the definitions of "fact" and "opinion." For example, in my opinion, Twisted Metal had a fun premise but was only good for about 5 minutes' worth of destruction before _yawn_, Die Hard Trilogy was another boring on-rails House Of the Dead, Tomb Raider was boring and uninspired and the guns in the first one sounded like...I don't know what they sounded like, but not guns.

You're right about Silent hill, Tomb raider and Metal gear solid. I've always found Tony Hawk to be a bit boring, but that's just me. And you didn't specify a Castlevania.

To be honest, I thought there'd be more debating over jaggies and fog.

The N64 was initially my favourite, Zelda, Goldeneye and so on, but then the PS1 hit me and I bought Metal Gear Solid 1, a couple Final Fantasy games and many other classics that I wasted so much time on.

Hard choice for me, both were very good consoles.

I guess it has to be N64. It did have Goldeneye and Duke Nukem 64.

Oh and it also had arguably the greatest game of the generation, if not in the history of gaming. Ocarina of freakin Time! Highest rated game on Metacritic. Any other argument is invalid.

/thread.

I never owned an N64, but when. I played one for the first time I'm like 'where the f is the Z button???.
However it was a fun system.
My brother and I owned a buttload of PS1 games and are still preserved in the house =)

PS1. It spelled the end of the cartridge and brought the disk to its proper place. It also had games like Twisted Metal, Final Fantasy VII, War Hawk, and who can forget Metal Gear Solid. The N64 had some great games like Super Smash Brothers, Orcarina of Time, and Goldeneye, but it used an outdated cartridge system and it fell behind while the PS1 went on to sell 100 million units, the first system to ever reach that feat. The N64 was an outstanding system, I owned one along with my PS1, but I feel that the PS1 brought a revolution to the video game industry. That is why I think it is the better system. But then again, my opinion will be probably be quoted a few times and I will be called a stupid brain dead gaystation fanboy for daring to say PS1 was better. But let it be known that I love the N64 and that it gave cartridge based gaming a final, and well deserved and well executed, last hoorah.

N64 was a legend. Not only was it better than PS1, but it was better than the whole generation that succeeded it.

Ocarina of Time
Majora's Mask
The original Smash Bros.
Rogue Squadron
Bomberman64
MarioKart64
StarFox64(/Lylat Wars)
Pokemon Snap
Goldeneye

It's the friggin Hammurabi of modern gaming.

Did you seriously say PS1 didn't have good games?

A real 3D FPS as you describe is one that doesn't have SPRITES for the actors, as you said. The PS1 had plenty of. Obviously I prefer Perfect Dark or Goldeneye to, say, Armorines (which also had a N64 port which was shittier) or Medal of Honor (Yes, the first one was on PS1.)

However, that's not denying that the PS1's technical specs allowed it to get ports of, say, Powerslave, Descent and The World is Not Enough...

Anyway, the PS1 spawned plenty of 3D games, not all FPS, it was more of a third-person shooter platform (See the duke nukem games made for it, syphon filter, metal gear solid (SORT OF, DON'T HIT ME), etc.)

And I only had a N64, but my friend had a PS1 so I got to see and experience some nice stuff.

As usual, Sega was ahead of its time with the Saturn, but the PS1 came out too fast after the Saturn launch and a 'wrong place wrong time' thing happened, sort of like the Dreamcast and the PS2. :/

But anyway, I loved the N64. But not for FPS or "3D" capabilities. Graphics didn't even matter, not even at that point. The games for both systems had their strong points - only one of them had Ocarina of Time, only one of them had MGS, only one of them had F-Zero, only one of them had Wipeout...

The N64 is fucking terribad though. The textures, the memory involved, the cartridges, everything about the design of the actual system was horrifically bad. The PS1 outclassed the N64 in every way possible with potential for the game designers to use. And (OPINION) I thought things like Spyro and Crash were more fun than Mario 64, so sue me. However, even though the actual system specs of the PS1 were better, it didn't really matter much. But an indisputable fact is that it had more varied games.

The PS1 had more sports games, racing games, it had all the army men games, it had the rhythm games, the parappa the rapper, beatmania, DDR, etc.... It had more fighting games, it had the whole battle arena toshiden series, the fighter's megamix games, etc...And I don't know how I got this far without mention Final Fantasy.

I just think the PS1 was the better system, though I've had more fun with the N64. It's sort of like how I had a Gamecube and had a great time with it, but I would have KILLED for a PS2 for all sorts of games I wanted to play that now I can't even fucking think of.

edit: Forgot GTA 1 and 2, all the test drive games, all the twisted metal games (SHOUT OUT TO VIGILANTE 8 AND SECOND OFFENSE).

And reading here, it apparently also had ports of some of my favorite PC games like Wing Commander 3 and 4.

I bought the N64 so I could play Mario 64. I knew that PS1 had games like Tomb Raider and Wipeout, which I sort of liked, just not enough to buy a system for.

I'd have to say N64. The only games I remember from PS1 were Abe's Oddyssey and Crash Bandicoot, and only the former was particularly cool. The N64's strange like that, though. It has all these titles that are extremely memorable all made by Nintendo and Rare, but really they were the only games worth playing on the system. Outside of that, there weren't many particularly memorable games.

I guess I don't like the PS1 just because it's a very Japanese system (points for racism). That's not necessarily a bad thing, I just don't find much enjoyment in JRPGs or fighting games and such that are traditionally very successful in Japan. Nintendo, on the other hand, seems to have their own style that I find enjoyable, and back in those days they had their Rare touch, too, which I think gave them a broader appeal.

THe N64 had superior games but the controller was too screwed up to be used to handed, let alone while eating pizza or drinking coffee

All of the good PS1 games look horrendous now and are much less fun than their newer counterparts (with the exception of Spyro/Crash)

N64 games are still creative, charming, and fun. Look at Zelda, Mario, Banjo, Mario Kart, Smash Bros.

I do HATE the N64's controller though.

Perfect Dark is now available as a source mod with online multiplayer.

P.S I have rejudged my opinion, Dreamcast is definately the best, It had a macross game that didn't suck!
