Right, admitedly I am somewhat biased by only owning a PS1.
However, I consider it the better console, Sony worked out how to make a controller properly, none of this holding it different ways depending on the game thing, it had a disc drive, meaning it was also able to play music for those of us young enough to find this amusing.
Gamewise, there is no point denying that Nintendo had some amazing games for their consoles, Mario, Zelda, Starfox, SSB, etc. The PS1 in return had, Spyro (The first three were amazing), Crash Bandicoot (Again, first three, though Two was my favourite), Tombi! (Tomba! for you Americans), Medievil and, because most people rave about it, FFVII.
Now some people use the arguement of "Well, I still play my N64, derp derp." (Not even joking, that is a word for word quote of a friend of mine). Yeah, you do still play your 64, because you have too. That is the sole reason, Gamecube didn't use the expensive, unreliable game catridges, PS2 stil used discs, ergo; Backwards Compatiblity.
That may not be the strongest point ever, but when I had a craving to play Tekken 3 the other day, I could without having to fish out my old PS1 (Which I later learned was stolen a couple of years back). Then when I was at my friends house and we were craving SSB, we had to go find his console, the associated cords, the two working controllers. All of these things were in complete different areas of the house.
So for convinience, and what I suppose is Modern-ness, my vote goes to the PS1.
