N64 was, and still is, the most fun you'll have with a console, in my opinion.

I only ever owned a PS1, so it wins by default for me.
I've yet to play on a N64...

I owned both... collectively I probably spent more time playing with *friends* on the N64 than I did on the PSOne... but there were more "good" unique titles on the PSOne. The better hardware? Nintendo 64 by far... loadtimes were either completely nonexistent or almost, precious Z-Buffering (no twisted textures) and Anti-Aliasing. That said, games were longer and deeper on the PSX due to the increased storage capacity of the CD-ROM.

RPGs, Fighting Games, Platformers = PSX
Shooters, Adventure Titles, Platformers, Racing = N64

I understand PSX had Gran Turismo 1 and 2, but N64 had F-Zero (which was amazing), Beetle Adventure Racing, Star Wars Pod Racer, X-Treme G 1 and 2 and so on.

N64 straight beat PSX with Resident Evil 2: Full FMVs, high res graphics, load times - Pretty conclusive hardware comparison there. Another good tech comparison is "Forsaken": N64 had smoother, more consistent graphics, 4-player mode w/ 30fps constant and so on.

I don't believe the N64 *ever* saw a Street Fighter game. It had a couple of clunky fighters (KI:Gold, MK Trilogy) but for the most part lacked in that department.

If I had the choice to go back in time and pick between the two... I'd get a PSX (because I did, heh). Reason: I can mod it and download *ALL* games and burn em on CD-Rs... can't beat 50 games for $12.

N64? Probably won't need to buy it again, as it still used carts and therefore you can download ROMs/Emulators for it - Only problem is, I haven't found a single emulator that can take on MYSTICAL NINJA STARRING GOEMON (One of my faves of all time) or Goldeneye... and I'm using a Quad Core PC w/ 4GB PC1033 with a Geforce 9800: Curiously, we can run Zelda at higher-than-original res with modder's high-res texture pack at 30fps or more, but for the most part? N64 emulation's got a ways to go... unless I'm horribly mistaken in which case please PM me the details :)

Retrospective vs thread, hell yeah!

N64 was my poison, it got me into videogaming. And while the PS1 had some damn good games, none were in the area of the Legendary N64 ones like Perfect Dark, Mario 64, Conkers Bad Fur Day or the one game to rule them all, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time.

Also, I still play the N64 as much as I used to when it came out, and it still works perfectly after surviving 12 years and having fallen out the back of a moving car.
Besides what ^ listed like getting me into gaming, it had three other games that I still play to this day, the original Goldeneye, WWF No Mercy, and Super Smash Bros

I was always a PS1 person, brings back so many memories.

Cool Boarders 2, Spyro, Tekken, Crash Bandicoot did it for me.
I play the N64 once, and i just couldnt get into it in comparisson.

The nostalgia is attacking me!

N64 hands down. That console enhanced my love of games growing up. My friends and I still play it to this day: Super Smash Bros and Starfox 64

The PS1 was still good but in my opinion, the games were better on the N64.

The controllers for the N64 always stopped me from liking it. Damn you three pronged monster!

N64... i know they had great games in the PSone, but very few where different, i just bought the console and pirated the others (yes i know, wrong, i was so young)

but i only found 2 games worth buying, and both where Metal Gear Solid and the VR missions, other than that every other game seemed fairly familiar (same of the same in JRPGs or the Survival Horror genre) but in N64 the mechanics where fairly different in all of its games, and really, who hasnt finished Mario 64 with all the stars?? that ought to make you put things in perspective, also, the quality of the good games in N64 made it impossible to hate them (for the time, the PSone had great CG videos, but after them it looked like crap :p

Weren't the N64 and the PSX supposed to be the same system?

Maybe that one would have been the best.
You might be thinking of the PSX and the PS One? (Which was to PSX what later "Slim" versions would be to PS2 and PS3)

PSX was by far the most "visible" platform in New Zealand from my perspective, It was on TV and Rental store shelves more prominently which made it synonymous with console gaming.

Nevertheless, N64 was my preferred platform. While the cartridges restricted storage capacity, the hardware was better according to the breakdowns I read.

While the PSX seemed to me the platform for some big titles and violent action, the N64 was for me and my friends pure, unadulterated multiplayer FUN.

I love my N64, I still play it. Although the first game I ever played, I think, was Spyro for PS1 so that always has a special place in my heart.

I owned both, but prefer Playstation 1. The new console generation during the N64-Ps1 and Gamecube-PS2 has to go with Playstation being the better. N64 was alright. I found it choppy, and full of crappy titles. For every Legend of Zelda there was a Rampage game. It seems to me that N64 began nintendo's marketing to a younger generation. It was no longer the cool game console. And looking at Donkey Kong 64 vs Metal Gear solid; for pure fun and immersion, I give it to Ps1 all the way. It helped take videogames from casual to epic, although Nintendo has always been the king of innovation.

i prefer the n64. not only did it have much better games than the PS1, it's a fucking tank. My 64 is still truckin' along, despite being abused by hordes of children (being my siblings) that still love it to death. In contrast, our PS1 is sitting sadly on the shelf, very much dead, with no really awesome games to its name anyway.

Also, the 64 had 4 players. big plus!

N64 by far. I could not tell you one PS1 game that in my opinion has stood the test of time aside from possibly Final Fantasy 7/8, but I hate turn based RPGs anyways, so for me it's really no contest.
