PSOne vs. N64: Which was the better system?

I had both, but the N64 is the one i miss the most, though I liked both the games I played on my ps1 were always the more serious ones like LOD (yes i consider it serious) the N64 was mindless and fun, you didn't have to think too much, you could chug a few beers and have fun. I can't count the times I got home drunk at 2 in the morning and fired up banjo kazooie and lost myself in it for hours. Both were great systems, but the N64 will always have a special place in my black black heart.

N64 for me it had more games that fit the style of games I liked.

Oh and perfect Dark..........I played that game soooo much. I probably spent more time on that one game then I have on all the games I played on a playstation one.

I never owned a PS1, but played my N64 pretty much everyday, and still play quite often today. I am just now catching up on old PS1 games I missed. The N64 seems to have a higher quality of titles.

PSOne, I'm pretty sure they walked in and stomped on the 64 in terms of library, maybe that's just my preference. The RPGs on PSOne were just amazing and are great classics.

FFVII
FFT
Megaman Legends 1 and 2
Xenogears
Legend of Dragoon
Parasite Eve 1 and 2
Breath of Fire 3 and 4

Tons of great favorites :\

N64 FTW!!!

Just look at this lineup!

Zelda Ocarina of Time
Zelda Majoras Mask
Super Mario 64
Super Smash Bros.
Goldeneye 007
Perfect Dark
Banjo Kazooie
Banjo Tooie
Donkey Kong 64
Conkers Bad Fur Day
Mario Kart 64
Lylat Wars
Rogue Squadron
Superman 64! (wait what!?!)

With all those games becoming classics (even Superman for all the wrong reasons) how can you top it? You cant thats what!

This thread should really be renamed "which one did you play/own when you were younger?", you'll get the same results.

I've only played the N64 when 3d gaming was still new.

And I loved it.

Yes, personally I'll pick the Sega Saturn! Really though, for the first two years or so having played both systems, I thought the Saturn was vastly superior to the Playstation, but Sega gained a bad rep from the Sega CD/32X fiasco and people started jumping ship. Up until the Playstation started getting 3rd party titles like Tekken 3, Need for Speed, and FFVII, the Saturn had a much better lineup.

As for the PSOne vs N64, I'd call it an even split. The PS had the better lineup at the time, but the 64 had the more memorial games. Though the ironic thing that people always overlook is the reason the N64 kept up with the more powerful CD-based PS, is because of the innovative controller. The PS could do a lot more, but it's controller was basically a SNES controller with an extra L & R buttons. The N64 on the other hand was the first console controller capable of handling 3D games. Classic N64 games like Goldeneye and Perfect dark, online with plenty of others like Shadows of the Empire and Turok, would be extremely difficult to play with the standard PS controller. Eventually they brought out the dual analog sticks but it was kind of too late by then.

So in one corner you have the N64 with all the first party Nintendo games and the first console FPS games, in the other the PSOne with all the rest: racing, fighting, overhead survival/stealth, RPG's, etc.

I liked N64 because of Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and the pokemon stadium minigames were hilarious, but the psone had the final fantasy series, jade cocoon and the first metalgear solid game. So I'm for both.

Retrospective vs thread, hell yeah!

N64 was my poison, it got me into videogaming. And while the PS1 had some damn good games, none were in the area of the Legendary N64 ones like Perfect Dark, Mario 64, Conkers Bad Fur Day or the one game to rule them all, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time.

Also, I still play the N64 as much as I used to when it came out, and it still works perfectly after surviving 12 years and having fallen out the back of a moving car.
Spyro, Tony hawks pro skater (was ported to nintendo long after release, but it was a playstation game first), metal gear solid, final fantasy 7 and gran tourismo were all huge, I'm don't know what it takes to be considered legendary, but they can't have been far off it.

Overall though, I agree. The N64 was the better console, and as I had both and played through many of the best games both then and now, I feel I am somewhat qualified to make that claim. The only real shortcomings of the N64 was the sound issue (not sure if anyone remembers, but there was some problem with the sound which is why so few games had voices compared to the ps1) and that it broke in extreme heat (during a heatwave last year we had 3 days in a row over 40 degrees celsius, coming out of it I had a broken N64 *sadface*). The hardware was better (other than the soundcard or whatever it was that broke that) and I remember there being far more games that I liked on the N64. The controller was also far better (the original ps controlers were not analogue, that came later and even compared to those I still prefer the n64).

its a really hard choice. Because the PSone was really a large jump forward in popularizing games to a broader audience, and the PS2 build even further on that (PS2 was my first DVD player, and has been most of the time)

Both had their share of god awful games, of course. But when it comes to games that I think about and want to play again... I do think of the N64. It has one of my favorite games of all time- Conkers Bad Fur Day.
Plus it was the first console that I had a lot of hype for, and all my friends played it when it came out.
Theres definitely more nostalgia there... but the PSone also had classics like Spyro and Crash Bandicoot, MGS and Final Fantasy Tactics

I think Ill end up going for the N64 though... because nostalgia makes me

N64>PS1

PS2> Everything to date. Timesplitters pwns.

Okay i'll admit a PS3 with full backwards compatability beats the Ps2 because I can play AC2, MW2, AND Timesplitters.

I think that after all these years later, I'm about 5 times more likely to go back and play classics like the Rare titles and the Nintendo titles. There isn't much to go back to on the PS1. A lot of the Squaresoft games may deserve a revisit, but I just don't have the same gamer's hard-on for those games as much as Zelda and Perfect Dark.

Love you too!

Oh and I only got a PS1 very late in it's lifetime (think the PS2 was out already) and an N64 only two years before that so I can't give an all that fair judgment. 3D games were already well established when I got into gaming.

What I liked about the N64 was it's catalog of games. Final Fantasy in all honor, but the PS1 had nothing against the collected effort of Nintendo and Rareware. On the other hand the PS1 didn't have a controller notorious for wearing out...
