Doing the same repetitive tasks over and over to gain a slight benefit to yourself? That's just another way of defining a job isn't it? As I already have one of those I don't want to do another one when I get home to unwind. Grinding has no place in games - games are meant to be relaxing and fun, whereas grinding is inherently dull and repetitive.

It really does depend on whatever game I am playing at the time. For a game like Final Fantasy XI that put such a huge focus on grouping up I didn't mind at all because I had such a fun time always chatting with a group of people. When it comes to a game like WoW I can't tolerate it because the game is actively trying to move away from that mold.

It depends on the game. Some games, the combat is just better, and thus grinding is more fun.

Mostly, though, I prefer questing to random mob killing.

I find it incrediably boring...and doubley more so if you have to reply on others to do it efficently.

Which is where FFXI has fallen down for me, you can lvl on your own but its nigh on impossible and dull as watching paint dry...and, finding parties can be jsut as bad...as good ones as quite rare to find,...and, ones that last for a while worse so

One thing I've always thought is important in an MMO is the feeling of insignificance. Doing quests or grinding that make no difference to the world what-so-ever. It adds to the atmosphere of a big world.

So, yeah, I do like grinding. Granted it gets very boring, but I'm glad it's a part of MMOing.

As far as I'm concerned, grinding is about as enjoyable as waiting for the bus.

"Yes, it's cathartic."

However, one thing I've noticed is there's a significant difference between what the western world calls "grinding" and what the eastern world calls "grinding". I definitely prefer the (faster) western version!

The poll makes no distinction between PvP & PvE grinding, so I'll assume that none is intended.

I used to grind my PvP rep & rank in WoW Battlegrounds (so much more interesting than grinding raid instances), but stopped playing a couple of years ago when the system became broken beyond repair. The repetition of the mindless PvE grind generally seems vapid & boring.

Currently I'm grinding rep & rank in MMO third person shooter APB - fantastic fun!

Almost any game, MMO or RPG, that involves XP tends to involve a bit of grinding, and one player's grinding is another's gameplay, since I know some people who have outrageous amounts of tolerance when it comes to killing mobs repeatedly for XP, reputation or a rare drop. As Catalyst8 above points out, one can even grind other players in PvP in WoW. While you can be very passive in that regard, only doing as little as needed to get credit for being present, is that any different than gimping around in a game of Modern Warfare to unlock more weapons. If a lot of people aren't considered grinding on multiplayer unlockable-style games like that, I don't know what else to call it.

So I do wonder why this grinding poll was limited to MMOs, since as the replies are already showing, we've got plenty of other games that have grinding in them. I know quite a few players who enjoy a game like WoW but really don't like to rep or XP grind, and they'll just accomplish quest objectives or run instances to level, but especially with instances, the distinction begins to blur. It might be helpful to try and hammer out a definition of just what grinding is, and we'll probably find it's a very relative term.

I used to play WoW, and there were only three instances when I had the need to grind, none of them not to being directly level.

1) Quest: Slay 30 Kzavvz spearmen / Slay 20 Kzavvz magicians / slay 15 Kzavvz Megadroids (I made the kzavvz shit up, but you get my drift)

2) Primals. Ohhh, how I love those primals [http://ezinearticles.com/?World-of-Warcraft-Motes-and-Primals&id=599095]. They helped me get this [http://www.wowwiki.com/Nether_drake] beauty actually, and to ride it. Auction halls were the bomb for trading.

3) Quest: Find an item with a drop chance of 0.005%. They ONLY drop from THESE Kzavvz people in THIS particular area... Yay for grinding...

Now, quests gives you gold and makes you level in some instances, due to a massive increase in experience points on completion.

So, I never grind to level, but to see the quests or primals done in shorter terms.

The only MMO I have played was Guild Wars and fortunately, seeing as the level cap was 20, you didn't have to grind too much. It was more if you wanted a specific item or skill you had to go out and kill the same things over and over again which was pretty boring.

I've had to level grind on other games like RPGs...and yeah, in all circumstances it is horrible and dull.

I play WoW, so I grind sometimes, but it's not something I like to do.
I have a bunch of lvl 70+ friends in WoW that if I start a new Character we just power lvl for a bit.

If you mean grinding as in fighting mobs no I hate that.

If you mean crafting grinding yeah I really enjoy that, I used to love making clothes in Star Wars Galaxies.
