Yes it did, why is beyond me.
Oh, that's easy. DS pretty much monopolized the handheld market for a few reasons: First, Nintendo has a long tradition in the handheld market, so there's brand recognition and the experience in how it's done. Second, it tried some fairly fresh things, such as the two screens and the stylus. Third, it had little competition, since by the time PSP came out, the DS already had a chokehold on the market. Fourth, it provided a variety of games that appealed to both the hardcore and the casual gamers. Basically, it did everything a handheld console should do right and was at the right place at the right time.

3DS isn't likely to repeat that success, though. First of all, there's more competition, with the iPhone and other Smartphones taking a bite out of the handheld gaming market, PSP slowly crawling its way to something resembling a market share and Nintendo's own DS filling the rest. Yes, the DS might screw over the 3DS since many people might be content with it and not upgrade to the new one.

However, call it a gimmick if you will, but the 3D aspect is a pretty good sales point. People like 3D, but are put off by the cost and the glasses. 3DS does away with both. The built-in disk drive that you can install games on is a nice touch. Also, it's a pretty powerful little bugger, if the hardware specs I've seen are any indication. It's probably even stronger than the Wii.

Overall, it looks like it'll be a home console in a portable format. Something for people who want something new and don't want to shell out metric fucktons of money for a 3D HDTV, several sets of glasses and a half dozen Move hardware pieces just to try something new.

None of the above, thanks. Although I really hope my 16-year-old brother is getting some kind of commission from Nintendo, because he's been sending me ads and raving at me about the 3DS all week, and is showing no signs of stopping. I'm just happy with my straight-up DS Lite and my laptop, being a creature of simple tastes.

So, OT: That would depend on which of them is better for hitting small annoying Nintendo-obsessed brother-shaped things over the head with. But in all seriousness, if someone could convince me that that video of Milo on Project Natal from E3 LAST year was actually for real and not set up in anyway, I MIGHT be tempted by Kinect.

I suppose at some point, way down the line I might buy a move (if I ever get a TV that's compatible and there are enough games that interest me to warrant it). And I do need to replace my xbox 360, though I'd rather stubbornly beat my head against it's broken glory than fork more money over to microsoft, at least for now. It is conceivable that way down the line I may want one, and kinect has the same conditions as the sony one.

The 3DS on the other hand, I'll likely pick up on release. I bought my fat DS on release, and it still goes strong. Sure, in the first few months there weren't many games I was interested in, but it paid off as the library grew and especially when the promised zelda game was released :D

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm.

...what? I'm a PC gamer. Well, ....out of the options given the 3DS has caught my eye. All these new games may give me a reason to dust off the old DS.

I am. I'm somewhat surprised people actually want Nintendo's latest gimmick/cash cow. Admittedly the whole "portable game console" phenomenon sort of misses me entirely. Unless you're regularly stuck on a flight for over 5 hours I don't see much of a point to owning one of these. Even then I'd prefer a laptop... Can't think of a single portable game in the last 5 years (or, come to think of it, ever) that seemed even mildly appealing, and I don't see what's all the fuss over the 3DS...
To each their own, of course, but I would argue that nintendo's current DS catalog is the strongest gaming platform on the market. It's certainly got it's selection of shovelware but there are a ton of true gaming gems on there. Even a number of exceedingly hardcore classic rpgs, and I'm talking shit like wizardry. I LOVE the DS.

So I suppose my enthusiasm for their new product is largely based on how good they've been to me so far. If they can keep it up (and that's a very strong lineup we're seeing for launch) then I've little doubt it will be my new best friend.

Huh? Oh. Game add-ons.
I guess the Move. Kinda curious to see how it works.

I can't say I'm looking at any of those specifically. My 2nd 360 is starting to die out already, so I'm not going there again. I have started to take a closer look at buying a PS3, but let me deal with that before I start going after additions to it. On a side note as an avid PC gamer, I can't wait to get my hands on a reasonably priced and sized solid state hard drive!

None of the above. I have a 360, I don't need Sony's sex toy-cum-motion controller, the Kinect looks worthless.....the 3DS, I dunno, but 3D is overrated.

Damn, a lot of Nintendo junkies on the Escapist. But more importantly, I don't get why there is so much hate for motion control? It's a technology going through an evolutionary phase before it is perfected. I personally think that motion control is an inevitability, and I'm wholeheartedly going to accept it.
