the problem with that is they ALWAYS SAVE IT FOR LAST!

*fuck you mario kart, you just HAPPENED To have let me get the lead then use a blue shell to knock me out of first in the last 100 ft of the last lap, yeah fuck that*

and if im beating them by the rules, then i dont give a shit if the action isn't centered on me, they should have a "hardcore" mode then where the AI is like this, but as many people have pointed out, if we have to follow those rules, then so should the AI
That is a problem with some games, Mario Kart is really bad for fucking you over at the last second.

I don't mind it with most games. I've only played Wipeout and Motorstorm recently, both of those only use elastic to an extent where it's still based on skill. You can easily fall miles behind or speed miles ahead, but they'll make minor adjustments to the AI depending on the situation.

In a lot of games it's barely noticeable, and that's the way it should be, but the option to turn it off would still be nice.

In Burnout the other cars follow the same rules as the player, no cheating here.

Anything by Simbin is my recommendation, though they are pretty serious faced sim racing games. If that's your thing though, I'd recommend you check them out.
I agree - also, Live For Speed might apply, and iRacing, if you can afford it.
iRacing is god tier, but you had better know what you're doing because professional IRL racers love to hang out in that game and play it.

The burnout games have superb AI, that follows the same rules as you. They don't seem to follow a perfect path, either. They make mistakes and, on the whole, seem fairly human.

Well, Super Mario Cart is around 18 years old, so you really can't get mad at it.

That being said, try Split Second.
Not really a "true" racing game, but neither is Mario Cart.

I've been playing Burnout Paradise lately, and while it's pretty reasonable at the beginning, it seems to cheat like a bastard towards the end, just like most games. It doesn't help that they get a magical rolling start when you have to accelerate from a standstill, but on top of that they do seem to be progressively more sketchy in terms of what they can do vs. what you can do. It's particularly blatantly obvious when it suddenly jumps when you rank up your license.

I do have to agree about F-Zero GX being non-cheaty, at least if we stick to non-story mode. Story mode is pure evil and pulls all sorts of crap that's totally unreasonable and will make you want to hunt down the people who made the game and kill them in their sleep. The actual cup races will also make you want to do the same thing, but at least in that case it's because it's extraordinarily hard while still being consistently fair.

Oh my god the worst computer player cheater is in Burnout, any of them. There's no map for you to see where they are, but you can have the fastest car, and wreck ALL of them badly and one wrong turn and they suddenly dart ahead of you instantly. Meaning I'm 90% sure they just teleport behind you.
That's funny because I felt the opposite from Burnout Paradise. I would watch as AI cars ahead of me took each other down or sometimes even smack into traffic on their own, just like me.

I don't consider Burnout Paradise a real Burnout game, I didn't like the direction they went with it.

Any game which has AI or Bots, from EA cheats

Need for speed, a Corvette can come from 7th place and blow you away at the last second and win it

Don't even get me started on the cheating AI in sports games

I don't think the AI cheats in FUEL. Maybe they're a bit unbalanced the other way, too. It's not uncommon that I finish minutes ahead of the pack in the longer races.
I dunno. I've had a lot of races where I've been going flat out on the final straight and had AI cars shoot past me as if I was in second gear, with no explanation for their speed. I suspect it has rubberbanding code but has trouble using its extra speed to navigate that crazy terrain or maybe it just doesn't rubberband hard enough to compensate for the massive shortcuts you can take.

Yeah, in general racing games use an elastic (or 'rubber band', depending on the terminology you've heard) AI so that you can't get a commanding lead on the computer. Supposedly it works in reverse as well, but the loss in speed the computer takes may well be offset by the fact that it makes no mistakes.

Luckily, racing games don't tend to blatantly cheat anymore like, say, Mario Kart on the SNES, wherein Mario and Luigi can turn invincible whenever they want.
It's okay in arcade type racing games but in sims and stuff it's just horrible

The "making the AI go faster" thing is known as "rubber banding", and yes, an awful lot of racing games are unfortunately guilty of it

Off the top of my head, here's a few titles that don't do it:

- F1 series (although they're so damned hard that the AI may as well be cheating :p)
- DIRT 2
- GRID
- Need For Speed: Pro Street, NFS: Shift (1 and 2)

As someone said above, Codemasters games are generally pretty fair.

Every single Need For Speed Game has this. Artificial challenge due to cheating AI. The only series of racing games where I haven't felt this way is Burnout, I think.
That's not entirely true - though it is true for most of the "classic" titles in the franchise (Underground, the original Most Wanted). Pro Street and the Shift titles didn't rubber-band, but the reboot of Hot Pursuit contained one of the worst examples of it in living memory so... yeah.

And while Mario Kart Wii may have a couple of flaws, cheating AI isn't really one I've noticed.
So you've not noticed that every time you are in 1st you are constantly bombarded with squids, red and blue shells and other weapons designed to wreak your game? Mario Kart Wii is not a racing game, its an exercise in patience.

Crash Team Racing was pretty fair for me. Once I learned how to powerslide properly I got miles ahead of the bots and they would catch me. Except in boss battles >_>

The new Forza seems very interesting in that regard. Really curious to see how their AI thing turns out. But from the vids, I've seen so far, it looks impressive.

I don't know if there is a game like that sorry.

The last one I played was Road Rash 3 and the ai was pretty good, however Lucky Luke is always an asshole to get around.

Can't say I have played that many racing games.

In some the drivers stick to lines.. and to get past you simply use aggression and push them into walls. Of course in real life both cars would be utterly damaged and you might lose a race just for that.

And yes the mario kart rubber band AI is a well known one to. Though other games [need for speed] seem to use it to. It is a more dramatic type of racing when the others are never far away. And as is said in some of these games those at the back will get the blue shell of death.. while on the front you get jack shit. And sometimes it is very interesting to see how somehow an enemy gets a 50% speed boost [beyond the cars ability] just so they can get closer again.

That is to keep it dramatic..

You want non cheating, Gran Turismo, I mean if I choose an obviously overpowered car. A 750HP fire breathing rear wheel monster and put it out in the "sunday race" yeah.. no rubber banding there. You will win.. because the same bunch of slow cars load.

Gran Turismo gets harder as the upper races have limitations. That pull cars closer together in performance, there you'll have to be actually decent at playing the game to get a win.

And there are some WTC games out there that are rather though as nails. Why? Well again cars are all kinda kept equal and skills really matter. No need for cheating there!

But many gamers enjoy the rather lesser "rubber banding" AI. That way they have the drama of racing with the others never far away.

Try it, go race in a need for speed and instead of actually trying to race keep driving 35MPH everywhere.. the AI will be pathetically slow to.

Gran Turismo, well the cars want to drive the line. It isn't the most intelligent.

Perfect racing, every item has less effect on AI racers, possibly less(if any) stun time when off-screen.

It's not as obvious as the other Mario Kart games but the AI still cheats.
Really? I played maybe an hour or so of Mario Kart Wii when it first came out and one of the very first things I noticed was that the rubber banding was the worst it had ever been in that series. Which was impressive since the rubber banding in Double Dash had already pushed it way too far as it was.

I tried that in Carbon. The difference in lap times between a race you win and a race where you just sit on the starting grid is about 10%.
