so, essentially this whole article could have been shorten to "Rage dev's want you to pirate their game". i mean, you can pretty much guarantee that any pirated version would be fully unlocked, i can see even those who buy it used would use unlocking tools or something.

Toys out of the pram.

Ill still buy it as I like my games new and shiny. The sheer "I have standards! I shall never stoop so low as to buy this" is hilarious because I bet 90% of the people saying such nonsense have it preordered.

Cue the "I dont have it preordered" response.

Why hello gaming industry. My friends All Other Commercial Products and I were just having a Capitalism. Do you care to join us or are you just going to sit in the corner and sulk about how you can't levy enormous taxes on every movement of every instance of your intellectual property?

Grow up. The original author makes no money off second-hand book sales, the original studio makes no money off second-hand dvd sales, the original manufacturer makes no money off second-hand car sales, the original dev makes no money off second-hand game sales. That is the way it works.
Haha, for some reason I got a kick outta that. Maybe because the way it started made me think of the oldspiceguy. Maybe that was intentional *shrug* but anyways.
Yeah, I totally agree.
It works that way for all of the other industries, and they don't whine about it nearly as much as game devs.
It would be idiotic to remove a chapter from a used book, wipe a song from a used CD, a scene from a used movie, or anything like that. So why should it be different?
And while I'm at it, last I checked listening to my CDs, watching movies, and reading books never required me to maintain a constant internet connection.
You know what, I think I understand now why other industries don't take the gaming industry seriously.
They're like the whiny little sibling that their mother forces them take with them to their friend's house.
(Haha, funny I of all people should say that, since I was that younger sibling in my family :p)

Next time I want to buy a used Mercedes, I'll call official Mercedes dealership to ask them if they're gonna cut my brakes if I don't give them a piece of that action.

This is fuckin' stupid. Stop punishing gamers already. This kind of behavior can only increase piracy.
Or you could, you know, buy the game new and actually support the developer? Rather than the, "Fuck you, I want to buy your game at a cheaper price, and not let any of the money go back to you, and you're a piece of shit for wanting to make a profit off of the sale of one of your games." attitude you've got going now.

I don't get why people are all up in arms about this. RAGE is going to be a massive game by the way all of the news stories seem to say about it, if it's a good game it'll be worth the money to buy it new. If you really want to save money and buy it used, then you're paying for a lesser experience. I see no issue in this.

You really want to blame somebody: Blame GameStop for not giving a portion of their 100% gain on a used game being sold back to the developers.

Oh yes, that's totally what I'm thinking when I go to buy used, not "I just want to save a little bit of money and maybe buy 2 or 3 games instead of just 1" but "Screw the developers MUAHAHAHAHAHA!". I don't like gamestops' used profits policy, but I don't think I'm evil for wanting to save a little money. They aren't entitled to my money, it's my decision if I want to save. I didn't tell gamestop to keep all the money, I do think they should change it. But I don't have alot of money usually, so getting a game for 10 dollars is a pretty good deal. It means I can get more than about 2 a year.
Yea honestly no legal goods producing industry has expected to get a cut of used goods sales until the video games industry. Even if people buy it used they can still sell them DLC at the same price as anyone else.
GM never got a dime from me for my car, Frigidaire hasnt extorted money for my second hand air conditioner used sales exist for every non-disposable item and unless they make games cheap enough to be disposable like a wax paper cup they are going to have to suck it up.

*sniff sniff* I smell a shit-storm of a boycott coming. Well done id, you've excluded a huge percent of the gaming community because you want to make money. Give them a round of applaud ladies and gents, id has become the biggest dick in the gaming industry! They're not stopping pirates; they're stopping people who come a little to late for the party!

Pirates rejoice!

Why is everyone getting so angry? Why are you all so against buying games new? Either way its not like they're ripping out the entire second half of the game. People are proclaiming that they're not going to buy the game now at all because some small extra content is locked for second hand copies. Its not like a few bonus hatches are gonna turn your gaming experience from a 5 to a 10/10. Just relax and enjoy the game.
Yes, but here is the thing- they did it anyways.
I don't care how much they did or did not take away, what I care about is the idea.
That they are willing to cut out a segment of the game in order to try and coerce us into buying it new. Like I had said in my previous post, people don't cut a chapter out of a book, wipe a single song from a CD, or remove the bonus features from a DVD just because it was bought used. And yet game developers think this is okay?
For me, I'm not buying it for combined reasons, of both this locking content, and also because of their absurd download requirement.
I though Rage looked pretty damn good, but if they're going to pull this crap then I'll take my money elsewhere.

Fuck developers. Yeah lets give more money to the giant game companies; fuck poor people!

"Whats that gamer? You want to save some money because it's more convenient to you and your current financial situation? Well I'm just gonna block a chunk of content so you remember your mistake!"

It's very easy to understand if you don't have a steady income, games are expensive as fuck! What about the people in 10-15 years time who want to play the game? Whoops looks like they're shite outta luck!

So I'm wondering how many people actually read the whole article? It only cuts out a completly optional SP part that, as far as I know, isn't important to the story, and they went on to say that some people who buy the game new won't even see the place, it just seems to me like day one DLC that you get with the game for buying it new, and have the chance to buy it later if you got it used. It dosen't cut the SP from the game (although the title sure did suggest that, porbably would want to change that misleading title), it works the EXACT SAME WAY that if you bought Mass Effect 2 new, you got into Cerberus Network for free and got Zaeed for free, and if you didn't buy it new, you chose wether or not you wanted to buy the Cerberus Network and get Zaeed, he wasn't crucial to the story of the game, you could go on without him, it was just nice to have another party member. It's really not bad at all if you think about it. I'd rather have a non-crucial part of the single-player cut out than have to buy an online pass to play multiplayer.

EDIT: Wow, I should have split that up into paragraphs. That's a big wall of text right there.

It's still a part of the game! The guy said in the article that it had new missions and enemies, that seems a pretty big part of the experince.
This is just away for them to make more money, thats all they care about. This is why piracy is getting more common.

I torrent a game with some content missing? Oh well at least I didn't pay anything.
I pay for a used game; content missing. Wait what!?

Well my response to that is I will never buy rage.

I'm not being petty or anything, but I don't have online access and generally only play single player campaigns. I also don't buy games when they come out, I wait until I can afford them :s
Its only a small side section, no biggy, you'll still be able to enjoy almost all of the game, just think of it as day one dlc

I wish people wouldn't buy games that used things like this. Too bad so many gamers exist these days therefor meaning that there will be more and more idiots that won't think twice when purchasing games that rip people off like this. No other product on this planet has such rediculous precautions in place when it comes to the used game market and even the new game market as well (always online etc)

It goes to show how the game developers that once treated their games with respect see them as nothing more than a tool to swindle more and more money out of unsuspecting victims. I only wish there was a way of getting my point across to the masses but, I know that these messages will probably just fall on deaf ears.
Developers have been doing this for years, its called day one DLC. A tiny section of the game is held back for people who buy it new
Christ I wouldn't have to correct everyone if they'd read the f*cking article

Cut spending, sell games for less, give people a bounus for buying new
I agree with this point, and Valve has shown through a similar model that these practices can be highly lucrative for a business. People eat Steam sales up.

I'm not against used game sales, but I'm also not against id's decision. They want to see more royalties, and with the way money circulates through the industry, I can't blame them -- it's cut-throat for developers.

I do think that they could do a bit more to be persuasive on the matter, such as more incentives. I will be buying Rage new because I want to support id, a company I admire; I grew up playing Doom and Wolf 3D, and id have always put out qaulity games. Rage looks set to continue his trend.

I'm sympathetic to those who haven't access to an internet connection for the day 1 DLC, but I can't summon sympathy for those who wave their flags of self-entitlement and talk of self-percieved rights.

Ok so let's say you are put in charge of his hypothetical boycott. In order for this to succeed you have to convince people to not buy the game at launch and to cancel their preorders. So let's say I've preordered Rage. What will you say to me to convince me to cancel my preorder and join your cause?

Why not just wait a while and buy it new, but when it's a cheaper price?..

Anyway, id is not doing anything wrong. I'm going to get the game on release, and just because it has something like locked content for people who buy it used, doesn't mean id and everyone working for id are evil.
