Rape Games Banned in Japan

I hate to trivialise things like this, but bear with me.

Marmite. Some people love it, others hate it. Now, if the people that hated it tried to get it banned because they didn't like it and thought it was disgusting, we'd think they were pretty damn retarded, right? Marmite isn't hurting anyone. A sizeable amount of people might not like it, but that's no reason to ban it completely.

Same with this. Until the people trying to make the case against Rapelay (and other 'rape simulators' - and I hate that term, since the last thing they do is simulate anything. At best, they're a badly-written animated (or sometimes just illustrated) story) can prove that these kinds of games actually have any harmful effects in any way whatsoever, then it comes down to a war of personal tastes. Which is just silly. It basically boils down to 'nah nah, I'm right and you're wrong, I can't hear you lalalalala', which is most definitely NOT how international affairs should be handled.

Hentai-like games (and I say this because if there's one unifying factor in most hentai, it's rape or bondage of some sort) provide an outlet for people who entertain power fantasies, or maybe just have a bit of a dominant side and don't have a sub to go with them. That doesn't mean they will rape people in real life.

People just need to realise that thinking about something is not a crime. You can't get arrested for thinking about murder, you can't get arrested for thinking about rape. I can think about braining my next door naighbour with a frying pan - even write stories about it, or make up a little flash game - but that in no way means I would actually consider going round his house and assaulting him. Like the old kitten killing flash games that were all the rage a few years ago. I seriously doubt anyone who played them actually shot cats with catapults.

Still, people will be people. So long as there is a mainstream, there will be outliers wanting to change it to suit their ideas.

Watch the rape rates in Japan soar. Congratulations Feminists. You're making the world a worse place one country at a time.
If you're implying that japanese potential rapists rely solely on rape oriented entertainment to keep them off the streets, then relax. There is PLENTY of molesty porn over there and it's widely available. But I'm sure if you keep looking you'll find another way to make rape the fault of women so hang in there!

I apologize for not reading this thread entirely but why is it only being banned now?!

I mean who seriously thought that this would be a good concept for a game and why has no one done anything to ban them sooner!

True I know there are many games in the world where the characeter may be persistantly breaking the law, with cases such as man slaughter and theft, but even games of the most strictest ratings have to be careful not to go over the top (e.g. Manhunt). To be honest just thinking about a game of this genre sickens me and I am surprised that no one has stepped in sooner to put an end to them.

Pornography (including the abundant rape-roleplaying kind) was vital to decreasing the number of sex crimes in Japan [http://www.hawaii.edu/PCSS/online_artcls/pornography/prngrphy_rape_jp.html] -- at least if you believe the linked Japanese-American scientific study.

As much as I'd like that Japan stop producing so much rape porn, I don't think that it's really possible or even favorable for such a culture.

I totally agree with you. It's simply sick.
Simulating an act, in with you not only physically but also mentally abuse a female.
I think that's a point were personal freedom ends.

off-note:
Every raper should be sliced into two pieces by a big rusty iron bar impacting his ass.

Hey, when they say art emulates real life - obviously the creators of this game felt that 'art' so far was too limited in expression.

hilarious though... a game the simulates rape.

Don't think I trust that because the American porn industry is MASSIVE and they will try and find a way to boost their sales and widen their means.

I went and looked up the game on wikipedia and found more links to stuff about Japan. How messed up is a country where there are women-only cars on the metro because there are so many weirdos feeling up chicks?

Yet again I curse my reviewer's desire to seek out bad things that are easy to criticize and experience them just to mock them. It almost makes me want to buy this just so I could write about how bad it was... this desire was what led me to review Aki-Sora after all.

To be frank, a) the rape was implied, not shown.
and thats what i mean by how graphic does it have to be, is it the act it self they find offending or is the graphic demonstration they found so offending they banned the game.

and by a quick look at the box art on this game it seems to be revolving more around boyish fantasies in a almost innocent cartoonish style, while the path (btw i agree i didn't like that game either) although not showing but merely implying the act it was done in a much darker tone showing the perversion and seducing.

All I can say is:

ABOUT.....BLOODY....TIME

Games about rape really help to give gaming as an industry a bad reputation. Because it's games like that the media point to as an example of how gaming is bad, disregarding wholesome titles like Portal. Less rape games is a good thing.

I mean it's one thing to use women as sexual selling points, and something else to be ALL about violent raping them like they are toys. Jesus.

(I never thought I would use the words 'rape' and 'Portal' in the same context before.... creepy)

I have mixed feelings about this. Obviously rape is a horrible and hideous thing, but this is fictionalized rape. It doesn't harm anyone at all. I think that it should still be legal for sale to those who want it.

I haven't read through the whole thread so maybe it's already been pointed out but...

No, rape games aren't banned by the EOCS. TBS fabricated the report.

What happens on june 2nd is that the EOCS plan to review their regulations, so a ban may be discussed.

While usually a fan of the "to each their own" stance.

Thank god this is banned. People who got kicks out of this game were clearly disturbed.
