Go with the Fallout New Vegas method: make it a toggle-able option, those hardcore enough (i.e. me) will have a blast.
This would be a very good idea, as it can appeal to a wider demographic.

Honestly, that sounds dreadful. GTA wasn't made as a crime simulator. Real crime isn't fun. Blowing up so many helicopters the military hunts you down is.

I don't really think we should make GTA anything else than what it is, a somewhat goofy crime pseudo-RPG-but as for the realism isn't fun, of course it is! For some. The more realistic the game, the easier it is to envision yourself as the protagonist, or as part of the game world, thus enabling even better escapes. Sure, some people escape by playing games that are as far away from real life as possible. Others enjoy games with realism, so that they can put themselves in it more believably. Take like, Mass Effect. It did a lot to make the world believable. This is a form of realism. They explained and spelled out the pseudo science and made the political wrangling and ethical choices more real. Compare to, say, Super Mario Galaxy. Not exactly trying to be believable here. Still, both games are fun. (in my opinion XD)

Mafia 2 has a a stricter police department but I don't know why the hell you would want to have perma death.

i want a GTA were i can drive a flaming car up a ramp and crash into a helicopter, or drive a tank the city centre and blast everyone that moves

what GTA needs is more insanity, give me an apache, give an F-16, give me a flying car, give me a truck that can transform into optimus prime, give me metal gear rex, let me cover the support beams of a bridge in explosives then watch what happens

the one thing GTA really needs is destructable environments

Im guessing its just me then. Maybe just a option? Like Yahtzee's idea for survival mode for Red Dead Redemption.
The concept is good. The mechanics you're laying out aren't.

If you had a game, that logged each kill you made, the police would investigate these crime scenes. Identify the weapons used, and try to trace those back to you?

Where jacking a car would give you a wanted rating if it got called in, and was then spotted? And so on. Maybe.

Now, the biggest problem is, GTA4 takes place in far too small a city for this to actually work. If you took a game the size of real life Manhattan, then it could work. Especially if the Police couldn't be everywhere at once.

I would argue that it be set up as an FPS, like STALKER is would be a better arrangement, simply because the precision of an FPS would probably suit it better.

But wouldn't that ruin what makes GTA GTA?

Your saying to make a game where you can dial your phone, make a helicopter appear in front of you, and use it's blades to mow down an entire crowd of bystanders.

"Realism" often just means making the setting realistic, hardly does it ever mean anything else.

Take MW2 for example.

They claim it's "Real" but you regenerate health like a super-solider.

If that was "real" if you were shot in, say, the leg. Then you would be evacuated to a medical camp, have to do a quick-time event surgery, then play out the 3 month physical rehabilitation on Wii-Fit.

Realistic GTA would be the boriest game to play, ever.

You will never commit really big crimes, and when you do, the amount of planning you need to do just to get away with it would be ridiculous.

It also means that you can no longer play as a single protagonist, since chances are, most of your character's street life will be brutally short, and most of the time would be spent in jail or hiding.

And in the end, it would also just reinforce the fact that the best kind of crimes are the kinds where it's legal exploitation. i.e. the entirety of las vegas.

I dont know about anybody else but I can be kinda obsessive about roleplaying a character. Yknow the start of GTA 4 where you need to go from your apartment to Romans taxi depo? I always walked that distance, not drove, walked. Not even running, I WALKED there. Why? It seemed like what the charecter would do at the time, not keen to get into any trouble with the cops and using taxis for longer distances and never stealing a car unless absolutely nessassery. It just seemed right.

Um... thats actually less realistic than what GTA currently is.

The reason jacking a car in front of a guy with a cellphone doesn't get "wanted stars" is because the 911 call, in the real world, if it even happens at all, would go something like this.
operator: 911 emergency
Caller: Yea, some foreign guy just pulled some lady out of a car and drove off in it
operator: What was the make and model of the car, sir?
Caller: Uh, it was, uh, blue I think. Pretty nice.
operator: ... where did this happen, sir?
Caller: On 4th street.
operator: Where on 4th street sir?
Caller: Next to me.
etc.
So the police have a completely worthless report from some guy who didn't get a good look, couldn't tell the make/model, and likely didn't call quick enough. The cops won't respond at all and won't even be looking for the car in question until the owner reports it stolen.

But, yea, driving on the wrong side of the road or speeding past a cop at 140mph should get you instant wanted stars the way drunk driving does. Whats funny is you can swirve and shift around the map the exact way you would while 'drunk' and no one cares until you scratch a police car.

Also, holding your ground with wanted levels in GTA4 is always suicide. Sure, it takes a few waves of police before you're overwhelmed, but the only reason you will ever stop and return fire is to clear a path to a decent enough car to get away.

It would be crappy, but on the other hand the police won't shoot you if you drive and run around unarmed.

Anyway, that sounds incredibly infuriating and boring.
This, holy crap do I hope they never make a totally realistic GTA. I'd never buy it. I got into 2 way back because of how comically fun it was to jack a Yakuza car and then drive over a bunch of pedestrians.

Not to mention if you want a 'realistic' game, get used to only having one or two weapons available. You won't be carrying a baseball bat, 9mm Glock, 2 Tec9's, shotgun, AK47, rocket launcher, and a backpack full of pre-lit Molotov cocktails like you can in GTA:SA (the only version I've played).

They made it, it was called Mafia and it rocked.

Sadly the sequel got dumbed down, but was still good.

I like realism but that just sounds incredibly frustrating.

That game was called Mafia, and it was awful.
Beg your pardon? Mafia is an example of realism done right.

GTA is like KoRn

Ok while your 14 but after that....

The only way they can make me care is if they make Vice City again, since its the only one that is good.
