If you absolute must watch an American production go for Sublime and I've heard good stuff of the Jack Ketchum stories, even though I have neither read one of his books nor have I watched one of the films.
As far as Ketchum's concerned, I saw the Lost. It was pretty retarded. The second act is pointless. You may as well just watch the first 15 minutes and the last half hour. It's a shame because the first and third acts are good, but the middle is nothing but high school porn.

OT: Cabin Fever. It's more comedy than horror, but it does have it's moments. This movie makes you dread when a hot girl starts to take her clothes off. And that fucking scene with the shovel...

Creepshow 2, just for the one in the middle, called The Raft.

Want to know what you should never see? The Strangers. Only movie I've ever demanded my money back for. The theater manager not only gave me free tickets, but apologized to me.

If you don't mind older films, I'd go for Godzilla: King of the Monsters. It is kinda goofy, but you don't need to dig that far to find the disturbing aspects of it.

Silence of the Lambs is also really good, if you call it a real Horror film, and the other films in the series aren't bad (other than Red Dragon, that was ass).

The one thing I insist on you not watching is a "Torture Porn" film like Hostel or Saw. What you will experience is NOT horror, but disgust. There is no atmosphere to those movies. You aren't afraid for the well-being of a likable cast, you're disturbed by what is happening to the human body.

Zombie movies are always a good route and if you want to try something different watch Midnight Meat Train.

Here is some very good horror films for you to watch.

Creepshow-Brilliant movie, it's basically an anthology movie based on E.C. comics, the Crate segment is brilliant.(not to mention that it is directed by George.A. Romero, and written by Stephen King)

28 Days Later-This is another good film, there is one scene in particular that makes me squirm every time.

The Thing-There are not enough words in the universe to sum up this film.

Dawn/Day of the dead-both are really great Zombie movies, the latter film being my favourite.

Pet Sematary-I have really no idea why I like this film so much, I mean I find it really creepy.

Poltergeist-Awesome and disturbing movie, enough said.

Saw was pretty good, in my opinion. Especially since it has Cary Freakin' Elwes.

Those kinds of films are only enjoyable to some, and effective to nobody. And they've become bankable. Torture Porn is the Rhythm Game of the Horror film genre.

I agree, classics are highly overrated.

The only horror movie to actually scare me was The Descent, so maybe give that a try.
I loved that movie, but the ending was terrible. I couldn't believe they included
a dream
It didn't end with a dream in the version I watched, she gets monstered by the monsters

The most brilliant psyhcological horror/thriller I've seen is George Sluizers Spoorloos.

I warmly recommend it. If all goes right, you'll be scarred for life.
BUT - avoid the american remake at all costs; "The Vanishing".
All subtlety was removed in favour of a friendlier climax.
Are there subtitles available? I'll watch things in any language, even moon-language, but I it's a bit hard without a sub.

Yeah, I know she does but
the film shows her escaping, and then she wakes up and it's a dream. Or am I thinking of a different film?

The original JAPANESE Pulse (or Kairo in Japanese) and 28 Days Later are my two favorite horror movies.
