I would say Final Fantasy 6. You can get it on the Super Nintendo or GBA, but the GBA would be easier to find and cheaper.
It has a storyline that isn't immediately just to kill the badguy, or find an obligatory great power. It develops over time, and all the characters are given some significant development and backstory, and have generally unique personalities.
Some of the set pieces are interesting, and the music is likely the best in videogaming history. It all combines to form an impeccable atmosphere that really personifies both the series and the genre.
Yep I'm going with 6. I want to play it on my TV though, so I will buy it for the SNES.

Thanks for your help guys, even though I pretty much had my heart set on this one anyway.

It's all down to personal opinion. I adores 10 and thought that the story was fantastic and so was the leveling system, what did you not like about it?(apart from seymour looking like a freak :p)

You could search out the PS1 version of VI if you are so inclined. It will probably cost a little less, and if you live in the US I believe that they released an anthology type dealie with FFV and VI together.

Sure sure, i didnt like that They reminded me of 8, the goodie too nature, the whole storyline, Sin my ass!! the Leveling system was an upgrade, i give it that, and they just seemed so weird to me, i couldnt warm up to any of the characters.

*Zen* personal opinion sure!

I just found that for a cheap price. I think I'll buy that and get a PS1 memory card. Thank you.

Final Fantasy I: For the experience of playing the game that started it all.
Final Fantasy V: For the job system.
Final Fantasy VI(PSX) III(SNES): One of the best ones out there.
Final Fantasy VII: Too see why everyone loves it so much. Also good.
Final Fantasy IX: Mix of old and new Final Fantasy's. Plus My fav.
Final Fantasy Tactics: Haven't played much but I hear its a good one.

In my opinion I find them all good. There all the same but also so different.

Looks like you've already decided, but personally IX is the only one I ever played to completion. Zidane just came off as a much more likable character than most of the other mains for me.

6, great story, great battles, a little dated.
7, great scenario writing, great battles, a little dated, poorly translated.
8, not as good as 7 or 9, only good for OCD types.
9, Discs 1-3 are solid, characters are very funny, skill system kinda sucks, End if Disc 3 is pretty bad.
10, great story, graphics and battles, irritating main character who takes a while to grow on you, cheesy Voice Acting.
12, Story is a little sparse, completely different battle system, lots of trekking across geography, great graphics, brilliant translation and some of the best music in the series.

That's every Final Fantasy in a nut shell, can't recommend just one because I love every one but 8.

I really like 8. Ya the draw system takes a lot of time, but that's what I love so much about Final Fantasy. Each one is different.

FF Tactics Advance.

Worthless 'story', but the gameplay is in essence an upgraded version of the universally lauded FF Tactics for the original PS. I've played the PSP remake of it, and I just couldn't get into it anymore, after having wasted 70+ hours in FF Tactics Advance 2 (for the DS, which is so far the second most perfected version of the SRPG genre out there imo, only second to Disgaea, of which parts 1 and 2 are out for the PS2, in case you might want to check out more SRPG's)

If you're up for actual RPG'ing... If you're not annoyed by seeing sprites, pick any pre-3D Final Fantasy. I and II are a bit confusing to find your way in (no in-game map afaik, not even in the PSP remakes), but their handheld renditions have kept their old-skool charm pretty well. FF VI is probably your best bet if you're up for a compelling story and characters.

As for 3D FF's, I've only played through VII and got halfway through IX. Both were pretty good (they're very memorable at the least).

I'd recommend VII, since IX's battle loading took ages and downright pissed me off when I reached the third disc (making me put it aside and never bothering playing it again, hrm... I should look for it now, I must still have it somewhere...). VII has the materia system, IX has equipment-based skill learning and a card game built-in (of which I hardly understand ANYTHING). They're similar, yet so very different.

I liked Irvine personally. Although Squall was the kind of character whom you liked and wanted to punch in the face at the same time.

I have played most and I suggest 6,7,9 or 10.

All great :), but if you want the best story, go for 7 or 10.
