Play FF 6, 7, 9 , 12

DO NOT go for 8, 10,

You will be so irritated that you may break your TV set
Oh, you wanna go?
jk, FFVIII is not for everyone I guess. I thought 8, 10, 10-2, and 1 were all good IMHO
I didnt totally hate 8 tho, i didnt like Squall and Rinoa especially, and then the Aeons the GFs take to atually perform!!! just too much.
I liked Irvine personally. Although Squall was the kind of character whom you liked and wanted to punch in the face at the same time.
You know!! i LOVED Irvine, long hair and shotgun (one of my best type of fire-arm) he could do no wrong, one of the reasons i actually finished the game.
I just wish you could have used the sniper rifle from Disc 1 in game.

I thought everyone would be saying 7 (which is good).
I recommend 9, I've heard a lot of good things about it but have never gotten a chance to play it myself (I can't find it :'[)
I'll mail it to you. Via a pigeon. Its quite good.

I'm gonna have to say VI, even though I started with VII.

VII's a good way to ease into the RPG world, since MILLIONS of people's first RPG was that, though VI has a better story in my opinion.
If you wanna go real simple though, like the old FF games but more fleshed out, try IX.

FF3 (SNES) Was released in Japan as FF6. Was the last FF game for the SNES.

It was hands down my favorite Final Fantasy game.

every one except for 8 and 10. All were great. And 10 was a little annoying to me, being the main character a something hundred year old prepubescent boy (the characters were my big motivation for not just running around getting to 99). 8 was 7 in a shell of rehash. Squall wasn't the most likable person; even less than Cloud, but it was okay for a while. The two that I don't recommend are really snagged by their sudden spikes of difficulty in unavoidable places, and laboriously far back save points.

9 is the best FF game ever in my opinion. It had great cutscenes; though no voice acting, they still presented a story without any dialogue. It also had a nice mix of new and old and getting rid of a lot of the weird sci-fi things they did with 7 and 8. Plus, nobody anyone cared about died.

I'm running on because this argument has be made with me involved for too long. I recommend 6 and 9 (don't say it) as the two best. 7 is fine, but only the original. The movie was really weird, involving two characters not even connected to the main story (Vincent and Yuffie), and the subsequent sequels were very irritating and just fan-service. Square makes so money off of that because everybody buys it because of that dreaded roman numeral on it.

EDIT: Wait wait spin offs. Ironically because of the recent track record minus XII Final fantasy makes one of the best spin off series in history; FFT. I recommend all four in the set (or the PSP remake of the original) but beware of FFTA2 because its a little slow on the uptake. I like FFTA as the best. Plus the PS1 ones are adorable.

The problem with Final Fantasy is that the first one you play, is your favourite one, and if you start with a medieval fantasy one, you'll hate the futuristic ones.

I myself would suggest FF9.

This [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FinalFantasyIX] website explains the game better. Just don't highlight the white parts in the text because those are spoilers.

Heh, I'm the exact opposite. My favorite one is always the last one I played. Must be rough for the rest of you.

My rule for this series is 4,6,7. Since you can't go wrong with any of these recommendations, i'd like to mention a non-Final Fantasy game that you may want to try in the distant future. if you can get ahold of it by then, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne will render most other RPGs irrelevant by comparison.

FFX or the legendary FF6
There you go. Two of the best final fantasy games. I personally think 6 is better, however.

But both are great, and failing those, then 7. Better than X? Neck and neck, not sure, most say yes. But better than 6? Not in my opinion.

Also I would say that FFX is a good starter.

EDIT: Oh snap I should point out that I mean Japanese 6 and US 3, the one with Terra.
