All of them.
Back to back.
Leave out FFX-2 and obviously XI.

It may seem daunting, but I did it once and it was the best 3 weeks of my life :)

But if your just looking to get into it, I'd recommend IX or X. Both are relatively simple for RPGs but they both have typical FF storylines.

FF9 is a great first final fantasy because it has both depth and a low difficulty curve. once you get all of the elite equipment you can practically own all of the bosses after the fact. the story is kinda weird but then again most FF's stories are kinda weird at parts.

after that I recommend FF8, FF7, FF12 and FF3 & FF4 DS remakes

FFIX all the way, I understand the hype surrounding FFVII and the later titles, but honestly, IX is juts fucking amazing. I need not say more on the matter.

Top Tier (Great):
V, VI, VIII, XII

Middle Tier (Good):
IV, VII, X

Bottom Tier (average to awful):
IX, X-2

Outdated Tier (good at one time, but boring by modern standards):
I, II

I left out III because you don't have a DS and XI because I've never played it.

FF XII doesn't represent the series as a whole. I seriously freaking hated it. I can't stand RTS and the stupid setting AI to handle situations. I want to choose what my people do, dammit!

If you want to get a feel for the series, FF 6, FF 7, or FF 10 will do it for you. FF 8 and FF 9 have some weird alternated dimension/alternate planet things that turn some players off.

Play FF 6, 7, 9 , 12

DO NOT go for 8, 10,

You will be so irritated that you may break your TV set
Oh, you wanna go?
jk, FFVIII is not for everyone I guess. I thought 8, 10, 10-2, and 1 were all good IMHO
I didnt totally hate 8 tho, i didnt like Squall and Rinoa especially, and then the Aeons the GFs take to atually perform!!! just too much.
I liked Irvine personally. Although Squall was the kind of character whom you liked and wanted to punch in the face at the same time.
You know!! i LOVED Irvine, long hair and shotgun (one of my best type of fire-arm) he could do no wrong, one of the reasons i actually finished the game.

FF 7 is good but I think FF9 has an easier interface if a less interesting story... and not just because its my personal favourat.

Glad to see I am not the only one who loves FF2. Anyways the ones that make the series so great and the ones that should be played for anyone looking to be an FF fan are:

FF1- in my eyes the definitive RPG experience
FF2- great character development system if not for a few bugs
FF4- the first truly epic storyline in the FF series
FF6- It's already been said
FF7- again needs no explanation
FF9- a nice game that harkens back to it's classic roots
FFX- for reasons already mentioned
FFTactics- How has it only been mentioned what twice?! brilliant story and it breaks out of the mold of the other FF games. If you have a PSP get the PSP remake, better translation, gorgeous cut scenes, and portable.
If you have a PSP try Crisis Core, it's a prequel to 7 so if your itnerested in 7 CC is a good start.

Final Fantasy VIII is generally considered the weakest of the PS1 titles, though it has a following. I personally like it despite its flaws.

If you are only ever going to play one the you should probably go for VII, seeing how it is generally considered one of the best games ever made by many who played it. So if you don't like it, at least you can say you played it.

I'd go with 9 as my top choice for anyone new the series, 7 if you wanna see what all the fuss is about (personal fav), 6 is also great if you can still dig SNES graphics.

I personally hated 8 and 10, in fact, it was 10 thats made me ignore 12 completely (11 is an MMO, don't play that either), but I am interesting in picking up 13 (because I also have a 360).

No. I won't.

I'm not letting the final fantasy eat another poor soul and turn it into a heartless fan boy!!!!

Go buy a dvd instead.

Lost Odyssey - its effectively a FF game.
I disagree, while it is very good, the story lacks the punchiness and epic scale of most Final Fantasy games, far too many annoying little dungeons like the Crimson Forest and the Witches House that really break from the "epic" storyline.
