Although i have not played them personally, I am surprised no one has mentioned the crystal chronicles series. Are they just a whole new form of bad? not many have played them? what gives?

I personally like the 7 prologue for the PSP, Crisis Core, the best, but since you don't have a PSP, that's kind of redundant. I personally enjoyed 7 the most, followed by the GBA forms of 5 and 1-2. I played a little XII and X, XII was better by far, but X was decent as far as I got.

FFVII, so you can understand where the fappery comes from and whether you think it deserves it or not.

I would personally suggest either IX or X.
Go with IX.

All of them. Buy as many as you can get your hands on, in my experience they all have their merrits and drawbacks, if thats the kinda game you like. then form your own oppinion of which is the best, then you can spam abuse at others for their choice like every other FF fanboy lol ^^

OK I am looking to get into the final fantasy series. I own a Super Nintendo, a Playstation 2, a gameboy advance, and a nintendo gamecube. To the best of my knowledge, there is a final fantasy game on all of these systems.

I also have an Xbox 360, but I don't think anyone will be able to recommend FFXIII yet.

Discuss and help me out please.
Start with FF2 for SNES and work your way up from there.

The problem with Final Fantasy is that the first one you play, is your favourite one, and if you start with a medieval fantasy one, you'll hate the futuristic ones.

I myself would suggest FF9.

This [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FinalFantasyIX] website explains the game better. Just don't highlight the white parts in the text because those are spoilers.
I think the first one I played was FFIV. It was great, but I prefer VI.
I've only played III, IV, V, and VI, though.
I do want to see why people love seven.
For all the FFVIII fanboys out there: argue with this. (Watch the whole series)

Final Fantasy IV on the DS.

It's probably my favorite final fantasy - my favorite story, upgraded gameplay mechanics and graphics, voice acting, emotive cutscenes, an awesome FMV to start it all off.

other FFIVs are pretty good - but I much prefer the DS remake

EDIT: Just read your systems, and in this case, I'm going to recommend Final Fantasy IV on the GBA, or 2 on the SNES (they're basically the same game).

There's also a half decent american only Final Fantasy game on the SNES called.. Final Fantasy Chronicles I think. Most people hate it, but I don't mind it. It's very different from other turn based Final Fantasies though.

Also, I recommend Chrono Trigger, as it's the best RPG on the SNES, you can get it on the DS (which I suggest picking up as it's a great little console), the PS1 and the SNES.

For a crash course in Final Fantasy, find the GBA Dawn of Souls.
Play it. 1 because that's just mandatory, and the GBA version is the most... modern-gamer friendly. Then play 2 to get a taste of how all the proceeding games will be set up.

I suggest you proceed with nine because it is a good representation of the modern final fantasies, then choose something between three and six. If those stole your heart, play either FF4 or FF6, depending on wether you had played the other or not. Only then is it safe to tread into the, "Modern" final fantasies, but I suggest playing more of the pre-seven games first. You must choose very carefully with modern games, because whichever you play next will determine your taste in the series. FF8 is a more serious game, featuring a pretty believable world with rediculous plot devices, like flying school battles.
Final Fantasy seven and ten appeal more to an anime fan; if you like shows like Fruits basket, go for 10, if you like things like Naruto or Bleach, go for seven.
If you chose eight, proceed to play seven then ten.
If you chose to play seven or ten, play the other, then play eight. If you liked seven and ten, you will likely dislike eight, so don't make a big huff about it.
FF12 is a good all-around game, and is a good pallete cleanser after the strong tastes of its name-only predecessors.

I thought everyone would be saying 7 (which is good).
I recommend 9, I've heard a lot of good things about it but have never gotten a chance to play it myself (I can't find it :'[)
I'll mail it to you. Via a pigeon. Its quite good.
Pigeon mail!
More reliable than ebay :D
On another note, my roommate brought back his copy of (near) mint condition 7 that I shall be playing after Kingdom Hearts 2

I've actually just played IV and VI with a rom, and I liked it a lot. I will be buying a gameboy player for my gamecube, and then buying the GBA versions of these games so I can get it on the big screen.

I guess go for Final Fantasy X for a normal turn based rpg with a good story etc, either that or get FF12 which has more of an active combat system and is a bit like an mmo in terms of gameplay. Both great games but I would try X first.
