I live in the same area you do (SW US), so I know a few microbreweries I think you may like.
My dad, my brother, and my cousin are into the whole beer drinking thing, so I picked up a few things from them.

You should try out Stone Brewery:

Double Bastard
Arrogant Bastard
IPA
Russian Stout
to name a few...
Stone only ships out its stock once a year, so you can't find it all year round, but some places may have enough to last a while though. Their beer tends to be heavier with a stronger flavor and alch content. It's a bit too much for me to handle (I'm not much of a beer drinker like my dad), but you might like it.

Also, definitely try Four Peaks:

Kilt Lifter
8th Street
Hefeweizen
Arizona Peach Ale
check 'em out -> [a]http://www.fourpeaks.com[/a]
I love anything four peaks puts out, especially that peach one. I would say you just have to try them.

Stone resides in San Diego, I believe, while Four Peaks is in Tempe, Arizona (just miles where I live! Yay!)
I have tried Four Peaks' Kilt Lifter. I live in Chandler, AZ.
EDIT: I guess I should specify that I did like that one.

You should also try beers from Oscar Blues. I've never had a beer from there I didn't like. Try the scotch ale, it's very yummy. Plus, to reduce cost, it's "bottled" in cans. They're fairly cheap and they taste great from the can.

Murphy's Red Beer: An Irish classic that is both smooth and full of character, with an amazingly deep red color and great aftertaste. Again, it tastes the best if straight from the tap, but the bottled version will treat your tongue just fine. Best used with a wet, fish bowl shaped glass.
Y'know, that's what I don't get. I tried a couple of beers (because I want to find a beer that I actually like) a while ago, Murphy's being one of them, and you describe it as something amazing, while all I thought was "Well, another glass of fizzy bitter water, how...meh."

I don't get beer at all. The only one I like so far is Heineken Old Brown, because it's nice and sweet. I think I had a sip of Guinness once too which I thought was pretty good.
Tastes differ, I can only tell you my experiences with certain beers, I tasted a great deal of different bears when I worked for a liquor store, so I like to think that I know my stuff.

That being said, Guinness tasted like 2 day old, cold coffee to me. Probably one of the most disgusting beers I ever had. Again, tastes differ.

Holy Grail from the Black Sheep Brewery (or actually any of their beers). It tastes nice, and is Monty Python related. You rarely even get one of those in a usual beer.

I don't really drink beer often, but darn, I want that.

Staropramen and Straborno are two of my favourites, Czech-beers.
Living in Sweden my other favourites are probably not accessible anywhere else but they are as follows:
Cheap Thrills (from the Brutal Brewing-company)
Pistonhead
Koenigsbrau

When I'm at the pub though, I order more common beers:
Kilkenny
Guiness
And different brews from Samuel Adams.

If anyone reading this lives near Tempe, Arizona you must immediately make plans to go to Four Peaks (its on 8th and Dorsey if I remember right). Go there and order their oatmeal stout and their steak sandwich (I think its called the Taproom Tenderloin).

Do it for those of us who are too far away to do it themselves. I registered just to post this. Its seriously that good.

Will do, my friend. I'm honored your first post was in my thread. Welcome to the escapist.

See if you can import this.

Carlton is Australian swillwater, lower shelf cheap piss... Best of the shit but not one to judge Australian beer on. We have an emerging hand crafted beer market here and mircobrews have been around for ages. Probably in terms of a good export I did find Coopers pale ale in Thailand and while its not our best beer it is one I drink regularly so see if you can get your hands on that
IMO sweaty pub beers aimed at the workers have more character than indie handcrafted wank beers and the double-priced shit they scrape out of the bottom of the vats like Crownies.

Either way though, I'm sure we can all agree that all Australian beer made for the home market is completely misrepresented and disserviced by the existence of Fosters Lager, right? :shudders:
I agree wholeheartedly with you about Crown, "Premium" lager my ass.

1. totally don't agree; mass produced junk is not the same as something made by someone who had a vision/passion for what they want, it's like comparing goon and wine (Carlton being goon)

2. Coopers is not twice the price of Carlton (at most $3 more on a 6 pack (well worth paying))

3. Fosters- Yeah! They don't even sell that in Australia

I'm a big fan of Belgian beers myself, although many of them are not internationally available and as a result may be hard to come by depending on your location (I live about 45 minutes away from the Belgian border so that's great).

Some of my favorites are the Karmeliet Triple, the Saint Bernardus 12, Pa-Gijs, and most of all the Straffe Hendrik, which has recently made it's comeback at the Halve Maan brewery.

First of all, no American beers (Budweiser is the exception that proves the rule). Because, as a buddy once said, American beer is kinda like intercourse in a canoe - Fucking close to water. I am inclined to agree.
Also, avoid Heineken. It's just not that great.
I personally love anything belgian, such as Duvel (which has been mentioned earlier), but the beers I drink the most are scandinavian, which makes sense with my being norwegian.
Tuborg is pretty good.
You could do worse than Ringnes.
Carlsberg is the scandinavian Budweiser.
Borg is the devil's pisswater.
Corona is pretty alright.
Guiness is fucking luv (and a non-fizzy, dark alternative to the previously mentioned light beers)

I'm not trying to be a arse here but do you really mean "hoergarden" or is it "hoegaarden".
For all I know Hoergarden is a real beer.

(P.S.: Part of the reason for saying this is that "hoer" is Dutch for "whore".

The beer, unless "hoergarden" is a real beer, is Hoegaarden. They may have been making a joke though. I don't know.

Anything by Stone Brewery, CA is usually pretty outstanding

I am not sure where you live, but if you can get anything by Unibroue, La Fin du Monde for example, do it.

Sierra Nevada's brews are pretty above average for a pretty ubiquitous beer.

The absolute best beer though? Go to your local micro-brewery, if there is one, and get whatever they have on draft. We're spoiled up here in VT as we have the most breweries per capita in the nation; We've got two outstanding microbreweries within 20mins of each other up here in Burlington.

First of all, no American beers (Budweiser is the exception that proves the rule). Because, as a buddy once said, American beer is kinda like intercourse in a canoe - Fucking close to water. I am inclined to agree.
Haha - If you're getting mass produced beer, aka anything you can find in a can, that is definitely true (Though I'd argue that it doesn't matter what side of the Atlantic you're on in case of canned beer). If you get smaller regional companies, up here in New England Longtrail, Wolvers, Ottercreek, Harpoon, and Rockart are great examples, are pretty great in terms of their brewing.

But, if you're looking for really mass produced good beer Sam Adam's probably is the best along with Sierra Nevada.

This request is pretty simple. The only beers I've tried are Hoegaarden and Blue Moon. They were alright, but not fantastic. So I'm simply asking that you, my fellow escapists, recommend me some of your favorite beers.
Personally can't get enough of Tiger beer, It's got a really nice flavour.

If you're ever near one try Beir Halle,

http://www.republicbierhalle.com/gog_images/menus/rbh-menu.pdf

That's it's menu, over 130 beers for sale. One in Glasgow that I quite like. A little pricey tho.
