Sure, this is fucked up beyond all reason, but most sports fans are perfectly normal people in my experience. Hell, my dad's one, and he's not killed anyone yet.

Why they police hadn't showed up after the stabbing begs some questions, did noone call them? Didn't they bother to come? The fact he wasn't announced dead until he arrived at hospital meant they had enough time to get there, the area seems developed enough to have a standing police force. Its a large tourism driven town by the looks of things, they should have been able to get there and put a stop to it before they ripped him to shreds.

While I appreciate being called an idiot (I really do, it's great), I was not, in fact, trying to apply logic to what they did. I was merely stating that, regardless of how angry they were, it was not an okay thing to do. You seemed to be saying that it was okay, hence my statement.

EDIT: In case of confusion, my point is as follows: If a guy kills his wife in a fit of rage, that doesn't excuse the fact that he killed her. Anger does not make things okay just because it's hard to control.

But they didn't just decapitate him. They tortured him for a while, stoned him to death, literally ripped his limbs off, decapitated him, then mounted his head on a pike. No matter how you look at it, that's fucked up. It's just the wrong combination of animalistic rage and calculated cruelty.

I could understand it if they just killed him, maybe even chopped off his head (I wouldn't approve, but that's a different matter), but what they did is not justifiable.

Actually the violent outburst WAS caused by what people thought was "okay". They realized what the ref did was "not okay" so they did what they thought was "okay" in response to the severity of the "not okay" performed by the ref.

But you are right about how they were naturally reacting in an irrational manner and expecting them to do otherwise would be foolish.

Right but it's not like it's a quick thing... I just watched the video, this guy was hacked to pieces. They were litterally trying to rebuild him. This wasn't like spontaneous anger, the hacking up of this guy must of taken a couple hours.

How does one hold that anger and insanity for that long?

It's like the story of that little girl that said something fucked up to this kid whos brother commited suicide, got on his bike and pedal for like 6 hours till he got to the girls house to kick her in the face with a steel toed boot.

Y'know, one hears about hooliganism, especially associated with soccer. There are plenty of stories of riots and vandalism after major sporting events in many of the major industrialized countries. But... Stoning, drawing and quartering, and decapitation? That seems disturbingly organized and premeditated. It's like they already hated referees, and once there seemed to be something resembling a justification, all their gruesome, hate-filled fantasies went into overdrive.

I don't think this is going to do Brazilian tourism any favors, that's for sure.

I agree with the mentality being a massive issue. My countrymen seem to have a poor reputation when it comes to sports abroad, but this takes the cake.

Well uhm... I'm not an expert on the rules of football, but I would think that the use of a knife should probably not be necessary on the field. If a ref in my country got caught carrying a knife during a game, you can bet the board would give him a good sturdy talking to, if they wouldn't fire him already.

My neighbour went to South America last month and they thought he was batshit insane because he has 2 pet cats. They consider them on par with vermin or rats.
I thought THAT was crazy.

Maybe it's more a Central America thing, but I know having seen dozens of clips of football matches in that region turning into giant shitstorms during the game with the players being just as involved. Not that this didn't happen where I'm from (Holland), but there it was usually directed toward the surrounding city after the game was over. And only when it was a match between the clubs Ajax and Feyenoord. Both of which have an agreement to now only allow the audience of the home team admittance to the stadium. This method stopped rioting overnight, as well as saving a shit ton of cash on police protection.

Now this case was amateur football which generally has a lot of problems. A while back a ref here got kicked to death by players of a youth team. A bunch 16-year old kids killing a guy on the field. After that people were all "Oh the humanity, this has got to stop", but it just keeps on going. With many times the players' parents actually starting shit.

Instead of taking a few seconds to calm down and try and talk this out rationally; these two men instead get into a heated argument which gets both of them killed. The referee never should have used a knife on the player and the player should have just taken the penalty like a mature sports player does instead of verbally abusing and assaulting the referee.
