I think its because they have a had little to no success with real women, are intimidated by them, and have conceded defeat. Rather that accept these facts, they attempt to turn their defeat into some proactive stance or statement, claiming that their 2D fictional women are better. No doubt because they don't intimidate them, don't think they are being creepy when they stare, and can be viewed in whatever pose they want. When you think about it, its basically the natural extension of nerd cultural that has been objectifying the things they fear for years.
