Rumor: Activision Hungrily Eying Take Two

A wild rumor made its rounds on internet today insisting that Activision wants to buy-out rival publisher Take Two.

Following close on the heels of the demise of the Guitar Hero franchise [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/107672-Activision-Pulls-the-Plug-on-Guitar-Hero-Franchise] and the cancellation of the (supposedly) nearly complete True Crime: Hong Kong, reports have surfaced of Activision sizing publisher Take Two up for purchase. As evidence, many have been citing the fact that Activision appears to be clearing house to make way for Take Two's competing IP's, and that Take Two's board has been reworked by a well-known corporate raider to be amenable to purchase. So far, there have been no official statements from either Activision or Take Two, but that doesn't mean the rumor mill isn't turning.

"There are very strong rumors amongst people at a very senior level within the global business," says a corporate insider. "But they're not much more than that at the moment - they are just rumors. And, of course, given Activision's news this week, everyone is now looking to see what their next move is. But you can definitely put two and two together and make four-ish."

Who wouldn't want to purchase Take Two? The company is reporting a 7 percent increase in profits since last year; owns the rights to several killer IP's such as Grand Theft Auto, Bioshock, and the whole 2K Sports brand; and has several wildly popular and successful subsidiaries like Rockstar and Irrational.

Of course, the last time someone tried to purchase Take Two, the whole attempt fell apart. Ironically, Activision's CEO, Bobby Kotick, expressed concerns [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/83564-Activision-CEO-Concerned-Over-EA-Take-Two-Deal] over a takeover of Take Two back when EA was the one trying to buy it out.

And though EA's buyout may have failed, things have changed since 2008. A member of Take Two's board of directors, Carl Icahn, appears to be grooming Take Two for a takeover, forcing three other board members to resign [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/97640-Carl-Icahn-Puts-the-Squeeze-on-Take-Two] early last year and increasing his share in the company.

Some pundits claim that the dropping of True Crime: Hong Kong, a free-roaming crime game, is a sign of Activision clearing the way for a buyout by ditching a game that would compete with GTA. That's an IP every game publisher would love to own, and it doesn't seem like Activiison is afraid to break a few kneecaps to make it happen.

Look into those eyes and know the doom of all mankind!

OT: I hope this isn't true, so many game publishers have already collapsed/merged. My only fear is eventually we'll be left with the gaming equivalent of Pepsi/Coke, sure you can pick up some generic brand stuff, but in the end there's only 2 real choices.

I think that's the point...
Anyway, I hope this isn't true. Activision will ruin 2K. Seriously.
I think I'm quite sure Take Two is not 2K.. http://www.take2games.com/ // http://www.2kgames.com/#/ :)

EDIT: I just noticed they are "the same". Yay me!

OT: Please no, I really dislike all those publishing giants with all their pesky tentacles which murder everything that is creative and potentially unsuccessful. Here we go to another Call of Duty XVI and so on...

I really hope they don't. Activision will run 2K's IP's into the ground, and just cock things up for people who love 2K's games.

I doubt 2K's "quality first" mantra will go over well with Activisions "release everything every year fuck quality profits are only whats important"

Just... dammit.

No no no no no!

I promised myself not to buy any Activision Blizzard games.

I want to buy GTA V, so let's all hope it won't happen.

Waaaiiiit just one second!!

Take two owns 2K -- there the guys who are developing Duke Nukem, right? If Take Two is taken over, and 2K shaken up, I can sense another delay in the return of the Duke.

Dammit! We were so damn close, too.

[small]Please god, for the sake of mankind. Don't do this too us.[/small]

God I love his photos in these news. Just reading reading the article alone is rage inducing, but the smile he has while reading makes it so horribly perfect.

Where was I... Oh yeah, this is bad news but I have a felling Take Two will refuse just like when EA tried this.

2K is owned by Take Two.

OT: I can't really see this - if things are going well for your company and you've got a great line-up, would you really sell (for no real reason) to a company who's famous for sucking up companies and IPs, bleeding them dry and then letting everyone go?

Interesting.
I don't really mind Activision that much, but I'd rather not change anything with Take Two, for they are fine where they are at.

This is not funny.

If Activision takes 2K they effectively take over Rockstar and Irrational. That means they get Red Dead, Bioshock, and GTA. Gearbox also have their publishing deal with 2K which means they get alot of control over Duke Nukem and Borderlands.

Seriously if this is real I might have to have Kotick assasinated.

EDIT: I'd just like to bring this to attention. Highlighting just how far Kotick would go to biulding his solid $100 bill throne.

Of glaring mention is when asked if he could immeadiately change one thing in Activision, he states he would make CoD multiplayer a subscription based service, citing the 1.7bn man-hours spent on MW2.

Take-Two owns 2K, hence why all their IPs would go to Activision.

OT: I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that this never comes to fruition. If Activision bought Take-Two all of their popular IPs would slowly be killed off and ruined. Imagine a GTA released every single year... *Shudder*

EDIT: Damn, Ninja'd by Woodsey.

Activision likes success. They buy success, then they milk it.
If they buy Take-Two, chances are Rockstar will start producing cheap, fast sequels ere long, followed by an implosion when people stop buying them, and then a dissolving of the company.

By all that is holy, do not let this happen - Activision has death's touch. They feed off what they have, growing fat and rich on the corpses of the dead. They are a parasite in the games industry, and they should not be allowed to consume any more great works.

NO NO NO

This isn't funny 2K puts out some of my favorite games and activsion has shown milking of franchises too much lately. This will not go down well and I will not be happy.
