I really doubt anything will come of this - he's waiting till 2016? Really? He might be dead by then or far too old to bother with film making. He's 66 now, in 6 years time, he'll be 72. He could do it, but my gut reaction is that he'll be too tired to bother, and will probably foist the scripts off on a younger director, which could be great - Empire Strikes Back wasn't directed by Lucas, remember, Lucas just wrote the script and it was changed by other authors.

So in summary, if these new films are being directed by anyone other than Lucas, I'll get my hopes up. But if he still manages to direct films even when he's 72, I'm afraid I won't be lining up to get tickets.

Ha! Yeah, by the time he get the money from the theatrical re-re-release of the ONLY TRILOGY worth a damn, the earth will be nothing more then a fireball cruising through space after the sun goes supernova. Mark my word.

I only have 2 words... KYLE KATARN
How about 6 of my own: George Lucas' version of Kyle Katarn.

(Or, if you prefer)

Kyle Katar: My father was a great jedi. I will become one and surpass it while wearing a orange jumpsuit.

Edit: BTW i still play my copy JK2 - Jedi Outcast. But even Kyle isn't safe from Lucas.

This was announced previously as part of the plan if you were paying attention to Lucas.

Why am I the only one to think the prequels were better the the first trilogy.
yeah...probably

Acually, there is one exception to that. Episode three was WAY better than episode 6

but in general the prequels lacked the human element that made the originals good...especially episode 2. Episode 1 had the human element, episode 3 had good plot and overall lack of cheese...if he can combine his best parts of the prequel trilogy in the new films we'll be awesome
It's just the lightsaber battles...

When people think "star wars", the first thing I and most others think about is "lightsaber".

And let's face it, the speed and technique in which lightsaber duels were fought at in 4, 5, and 6 to a lesser extent was laughable.

I disagree, the lightsaber fights in episodes 1,2, AND 3 were fast and flashy, but frequently got a little stupid in an attempt to be epic. Im sorry you cant see past the lightsaber fights to the parts of starwars that are good. May the force guide you past this oversight in judgement and let you find the plot...or something else other than ZOMG FLASHY LIGHTSABER FIGHT

Not really, he has denied since the prequel trilogy any new live action films, the plans for 9-12 total films havent been brought up since the early 80s

Thrawn Trilogy FTW! In all seriousness though, if it's true they damn well better take Lucas's pen and pc away.

George Lucas is like an abusive boyfriend. You want to believe he's not going to do it again, but he does... He can't seem to help it.

If this happens, I hope it isn't terrible. And if it is terrible, maybe we'll finally learn our lesson and stop paying him to rape our childhoods.

I seriously can't do better than this... It's just too much. Let the characters live on in the books but damn... Do we really need another series?

Obviously the prequels were not even close to the originals, but they were better than nothing. It's not like I'd rather the prequels to never have been made and I feel the same about this. Who cares if it isn't as good as the originals, it's Star Wars! I'm sure they will still be decent movies.

What Lucas needs is people who actually challenge his ideas. Thats what made the original trilogy so good.
I agree 100%. Lucas is a victim of his own control. The fact that no one ever challenged him when making the prequels is what really brought the films down. Still if George ever gets this into his head (which is about as likely as Duke Nukem Forever NOT being a disappointment) Maybe it will work. I can see the opening crawl for Star Wars, Episode VII: The Desperate Money Grab right now:

We're sorry, we are so, so sorry. I don't know what I was thinking. Please forgive us and while you're at it please buy our new Jedi Jar Jar action figure available next Monday. No! Bad George Bad! Oh my god what the hell am I doing? This is going to be a disaster. The entire film is in CGI and all the actors, producers and writers arecomputers designed solely to do my bidding. Oh god this is going to be such a train wreck! oh god oh god oh god oh god...

"IESB referenced its track record of LucasFilm scoops"
Maybe George Lucas leaks it himself to see the public's response? ;)

My friend told me in like 1997 that they always meant to make 3 trilogies, btw...
The last trilogy is Luke Skywalker going to the darkside and battling his kids.
At least that's what my friend said, and I thought it was really cool as a concept.

If you cant move on George then at least follow these three pieces of advice. 1) Get someone else to write the dialogue because you absolutely suck at it 2) Get an editor who will keep you grounded 3)If you must include Shia Le Bouff or any one else who tends to come off as a whiny little shit then have the courtesy to brutally kill him off in the first five minutes

Called it!
I've been waiting for the next trilogy since the new trilogy ended. As soon as I heard about the 3D re-release, I knew a new trilogy would proceed them.

Can't wait.

The Star Wars story was finished back in 1983 when Return of the Jedi came out. There's no more story left to tell, at least not in movie form. And the simple fact is that there were many more problems with the prequel trilogy than Lucas being boxed in, timeline-wise. The movies were horribly made. The way they were shot was infantile and incredibly boring, the special effects were cold and unpleasant, and the writing was absolutely inexcusable for something that cost over a hundred million dollars to make. Come on, people! He already broke our hearts with the Phantom Menace! Don't go back to him so he can do it again!

The thing about the Star Wars universe is that it is really not that deep. It's big and epic--galaxy spanning civilizations, crazy aliens, a mysterious energy behind everything, etc--but an awful lot of things in it are more interesting when viewed from afar. Take the Jedi, the thing everyone recognizes about Star Wars. One of the reasons that the prequel trilogy was so awful was because it took all the mystery out of being a Jedi and learning about the Force. In the original trilogy Luke never fully understood the Force. He didn't really become a Jedi until he defeated Darth Vader at the end of the movie. Those movies were not about Luke BEING a Jedi. They were about Luke BECOMING a Jedi. Becoming a Jedi is an epic journey filled with wonder, excitement, and adventure. Being a Jedi is tedious and droning. The Force actually becomes routine and predictable. Force Lightning was the climax of Return of the Jedi. But in the prequels its apparently a routine power that all Dark Jedi above a certain level learn, like the Fireball spell in Dungeons and Dragons.

Take the Galactic Senate: it's much more interesting to hear about them doing things, to hear about the latest laws they've passed, or to hear that the Emperor has eliminated them. But when you actually see them, and witness all the boring crap that they go through, it loses its epicness and becomes boring. The phrase 'Galactic Senate' sounds really cool. It should never have been put in a position where it becomes boring.

Take Darth Vader: he was much more interesting when we didn't know much about him. What was intriguing about him was that he was so mysterious. He wore a creepy mask, had all kinds of dangerous unknown powers and knowledge, and had this ominous agenda that no normal person could ever understand. Ben Kenobi's summary of Darth Vader in A New Hope (he was a young Jedi pupil who succumbed to the Dark Side and killed off the other Jedi, including Luke's father), even though it only took a minute to relate, was way cooler than the entire prequel trilogy combined, because it was mysterious. There are some things that the audience should always have to wonder about--what happened to Darth Vader that made him turn to the Dark Side? The question is much more interesting than the answer.

Lucas can do what he wants. But I won't be checking out any new Star Wars movies until I can get them for free.
