Rumor: Lucas Planning New Star Wars Trilogy

Please let Lucas die before he does this. He's got a bad habit of changing canon already and the post-Empire books (most of them) are extremely good and worth big screen connections. If he decides to reboot/retcon this stuff its kind of a slap in the face to all the people who worked on the Expanded Universe titles and the fans who bought the hell out of those books. I really doubt anything will come of this - he's waiting till 2016? Really? He might be dead by then or far too old to bother with film making. He's 66 now, in 6 years time, he'll be 72. He could do it, but my gut reaction is that he'll be too tired to bother, and will probably foist the scripts off on a younger director, which could be great - Empire Strikes Back wasn't directed by Lucas, remember, Lucas just wrote the script and it was changed by other authors.

So in summary, if these new films are being directed by anyone other than Lucas, I'll get my hopes up. But if he still manages to direct films even when he's 72, I'm afraid I won't be lining up to get tickets.

Acually, there is one exception to that. Episode three was WAY better than episode 6

but in general the prequels lacked the human element that made the originals good...especially episode 2. Episode 1 had the human element, episode 3 had good plot and overall lack of cheese...if he can combine his best parts of the prequel trilogy in the new films we'll be awesome

I disagree, the lightsaber fights in episodes 1,2, AND 3 were fast and flashy, but frequently got a little stupid in an attempt to be epic. Im sorry you cant see past the lightsaber fights to the parts of starwars that are good. May the force guide you past this oversight in judgement and let you find the plot...or something else other than ZOMG FLASHY LIGHTSABER FIGHT

Not really, he has denied since the prequel trilogy any new live action films, the plans for 9-12 total films havent been brought up since the early 80s

Obviously the prequels were not even close to the originals, but they were better than nothing. It's not like I'd rather the prequels to never have been made and I feel the same about this. Who cares if it isn't as good as the originals, it's Star Wars! I'm sure they will still be decent movies.

What Lucas needs is people who actually challenge his ideas. Thats what made the original trilogy so good.

I agree 100%. Lucas is a victim of his own control. The fact that no one ever challenged him when making the prequels is what really brought the films down. Still if George ever gets this into his head (which is about as likely as Duke Nukem Forever NOT being a disappointment) Maybe it will work. I can see the opening crawl for Star Wars, Episode VII: The Desperate Money Grab right now:

We're sorry, we are so, so sorry. I don't know what I was thinking. Please forgive us and while you're at it please buy our new Jedi Jar Jar action figure available next Monday. No! Bad George Bad! My friend told me in like 1997 that they always meant to make 3 trilogies, btw...
The last trilogy is Luke Skywalker going to the darkside and battling his kids.
At least that's what my friend said, and I thought it was really cool as a concept.
