Can you, in anyway tell me any advantage she has with these heels over salvaging her boots from her power armor? They're preequipped with double/higher jumping, are made of metal and can kick harder, and don't have the negative effects of heels: Lower grip, higher risk of breaking an ankle, lower balance.

If the rest of the power armor isn't working for whatever reason, I'd posit she couldn't materialize the boots either.

Also, I doubt futuristic space heels work the same as regular ones. So we don't know if those negative effects even apply.

You do make a fair point there, but I would argue that that "Better is not good". In other words, yeah arguably her treatment was even worse in the past in some ways, but that doesn't excuse present slightly less sleazy treatments. It's true that boob sockets were kinda stupid, but I'd argue that they're less stupid than high heels because at least you can fight in a outfit with boob sockets, whereas high heels will actively get in your way.

I think the reason most people don't think about the previous sexualizations of Samus is that they only took up 1% of the game. They only showed up during death scenes or ending cutscenes. For the majority of the game she was a badass in power armor going around and kicking ass, and in the case of Fusion, telling her corrupt bosses where they could stick it. Not to mention that the implication with the Zero Suit was that it wasn't proper combat gear, but something that was worn under her power armor that allowed her to interface with it properly. Heck, Zero Mission portrayed it as a situation where she was vulnerably and stranded in enemy territory because her ship had been shot down and she was stuck with it because she had taken off her power suit after getting on the ship. It also fit in with Brawl because it was used after her power armor overloaded and fell off.

The problem with the heels this time around is that A. they're put much more on display than any more sexualizations where in the pass B. they're being portrayed as a default state of being as opposed to an emergency combat or a non-combat form and C. no one else in the game is getting this kind of treatment.

Overall though, I think this is a case of being the straw that broke the camel's back. After all, this is Samus' first appearance after the fiasco that was Other M. People are still pissed over how Samus got screwed over in that game, and with this being the first thing Nintendo churns out after that is most likely implying to a lot of people that they just don't care about the character. It probably doesn't help that a lot of people forgot about the sexualization in earlier games because of the Metroid Prime trilogy, which many consider not only to be the high point of the series, but had next to no sexualization of Samus at all. I think a lot of people (Myself included) are longing for another Prime game and how Samus was portrayed there. So yeah, in reality people probably see this as nintendo taking a step backwards. We went from a bit of sexualization in early games, to no sexualization in Prime, to...this.

The heels on Samus just don't make sense for her as a character or even practicality for that matter. These are not the "stirrup heels" worn by calvary men way back when these about to go to the club pumps lets be real here rockets or not.

I mean the zero suit can fly sure is all form fitting and all that but it makes sense to have a light weight breathable material under heavy armor for example like an NFL player wearing an underarmor shirt under his pads.

The heels to be honest are just silly and out of place for Samus sure she has been "pandered" before but really this is overkill.

He isn't criticizing the design for it simply being sexualized, he is criticizing it for being sexualized and it making no sense at all within the context of the suit and clashing with the tone of the Metroid universe and that is the problem with so many instances of sexualizes characters. The characters of RWBY are sexualized, but it works, why? Because it fits with the tone of the RWBY universe. Bayonetta is sexualized, but it works, why? Because it fits with the overall goofy nature of her world and the sexually dominant nature of her personality. Poison Ivy is sexualized, but it works, why? Because her approach to problems involves seducing men and therefore it would make sense that she dresses skimpily. Samus having high heels when she is a professional career bounty hunter in a consistently serious setting where no one else dresses like that makes no sense whatsoever. THAT is what is pissing people off.

But super smash bros is an incredibly goofy game. I would understand if people were getting pissed if these things were in a legitimate metroid game, but they're not. They are part of a fighting game that has nothing to do with the canon of the series.

I would've considered that a valid explanation if it wasn't for the fact the first three smash bros games managed to get by without giving Samus high heels and this one doesn't feel the need to be giving any of the other female characters high heels, or sexualizing any of the male characters in anyway. Heck, even the Zero Suit introduced in Brawl managed to get by with her having realistic looking shoes.

Soo... while they didn't give her a skirt, they did expose her midriff, and depending on the game gave her either short shorts or a bikini bottom, and she sometimes had a plunging neck line.

So, Yeah... Nintendo's pretty much been sexualizing Samus since the beginning, although it used to be that you only got to see "sexy Samus" as a reward for beating the game fast enough rather than that being her default look. Which I suppose makes it worse really, what with Nintendo offering up Samus' sexuality as a reward.

But yeah, I don't really the heels, even from a non-sexual perspective they're impractical as combat wear and Nintendo could have given her rocket jumps without being so blatantly pandering.

How can it be worse when it couldn't even be a selling point back then? 90% of people believed it was a guy called Metroid, and that was still what most people thought till Brawl it seems. And it's not like any of those images are offensive, you couldn't be fully clothed under the suit, though I remember she wore a dress when she died in Super Metroid.

I liked Metroid Primes reward the most. The realistic look is what made her unique to the other Nintendo characters, to me any way. Then they brought in this boring predictably sexy smug anime look, which just annoy's me.

Not exactly, the storyline from Brawl attempted to be rather serious what with there being WMDs, the genocide of an entire race, and a rather menacing enemy. And did Brawl fuck up Samus too? Yeah, probably, but that doesn't make what it did here any less sleazy. Also Samus always wears heels? False. Factually incorrect. And yes Peach wears heels...here's the thing though. Peach is commonly hated by a lot of people because she's viewed as useless, ditzy, someone who just has to be rescued over and over again, and overall is rarely proactive. And her move set in the brawl games usually involves using vegetables, frying pans, and her ass. Is that really the type of person we should be putting on the same level as Samus Aran, whose daily routine involves blowing up planets and stopping space pirates from using biological weapons of war? And whose move set included not her own posterior, but energy blasts, missiles and bombs? That's the thing about Smash Bros, while it is rather goofy with the way that so many games are coming together, they stay loyal to the various games. Mario shoots fireballs, Link shoots arrows, Solid Snake uses modern weapons, Sonic uses Chaos Emeralds, Donkey Kong uses bongos and Game and Watch is Game and Watch. Also, I couldn't help but notice that Zelda, someone who is usually viewed in a much more positive light than Peach, with people usually seeing her as regal, more proactive and much more competent, managed to get away without high heels.

Sonic had none of his modernized melee stuff like a STRAIGHT LINE homing attack, the Sonic Battle moves, or any decent kicks while running.

and zero suit samus still uses her pistol and her agility. Also, I never said Samus has always worn heels. I understand why people are upset about this, but I still say people are overreacting to the whole thing. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the better portrayal of women in gaming and in media in general, but it seems like unless the character is reasonably dress, realistic proportioned, not to pretty, but not to ugly and has no emotion what so ever they are labeled as a bad character(and yes I'm over exaggerating).

Samus has no "tone" outside Other M since that's (sadly) the only time she has any individual perspective you wouldn't have with Generic Super Soldier #10 if he had a gap instead of a pole downstairs.

She has about as much worth as a non-avatar as the Valve silent protagonists.

Funny enough, DOA characters have way more sense of individuality than her yet people pretend Team Ninja's work made the game awful. (I mean it would have been mediocre and oddly sexualized, but hardly an insult to anyone not as crazy as the "SONIC'S EYES ARE GREEN NOW" fanboys)

If I remember correctly, the origin of that Suit is from Zero Mission (GBA), and the entire point of that section of the game was, that she is very weak and has to be stealthy to avoid the space pirates. Fighting without her Varia Suit makes no sense at all. But this game won't be better than Melee anyway, so just play that game and be happy.

The zero suit never bothered me. Some sort of under armor would be needed for her suit and it looks like it would work better than the two pieces she has been depicted in in the past. The poses that they put her in are randomly sexulized at times though.

As for the heels, always a bad idea for a chracter of her type. They are also ugly as sin.

The idea of her fighting in zero suit when she has a much better alternative seems dumb to me, but I know why it was included.

actually even with out her suit Samus is a force to be reckoned with. Due to her training with the Chozo, her abilities are far superior to any normal human, it's just when she is up against super strong and armored space pirates she is weak.

Untrue. Completely untrue. She conveyed personality plenty of times in the games. The way she spared the metroid hatchling, the way that she idly waved to U-Mos after saving his entire race, the way that she closed the eyes of a dead Marine in Echoes 2, to her monologues in Fusion on her relationship with Adam and how she defied her superiors in the name of doing what was right, and her anger and actions at the death of her allies in Metroid Prime 3 corruption. Just because they weren't shoved down our throats, doesn't mean they didn't exist. She actually talked in Fusion and conveyed a lot of personality. No offense, but it seems like you're not that familiar with the character.

I think that Samus is pretty much queen of her own castle. If she decides she wants to go out in heels, she can do that. If she wants to go out dressed as Macklemore, she can do that. I'm not gonna tell her what she can't wear. But there is a little bit of a nagging feeling that they're taking her away from the things that make her cool, to me.

Like, in my headcanon, Samus flies away from whatever planet she blew up to cash out and spend the rest of her time lounging on Planet Beach surrounded by poolboys with money falling everywhere. Basically shooting a rap video all the time. This doesn't really jive with that? But whatever, not my character.
