As the old saying goes, "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree". Odds are the kid will turn out like his parents and like the name.

Seriously wait until the larva is self aware before you go blasting it.

I wouldn't mind being called Dovahkiin, as long as I got to play all those lovely games too.

Also, is bullying still a major issue? I'm pretty sure you only get isolated incidents of physical bullying nowadays, and I live in south east London! it can be pretty rough.

Why do people keep talking like this is somehow a bad thing for the kid?

THAT'S A FRICKIN' SWEET NAME!

Luckiest.
Child.
Ever.
I'm so jealous.
Yeah, the bullying as a kid and the weird looks whenever he does anything official (job appliactions, legal documents, passport control, bank accounts, etc.) for the rest of his life is really gonna be a whale of a time.

Why make his first name Dovahkiin?
It was just to name the kid it. Not necessarily the first name. You could have made any of his middle names it..

But now, he is Dovahkiin.
Thanks alot, mom and dad.
Just read SteelStallion's post. He does this better than I could.

I wonder what "Dovahkiin" would shorten out to.

My guess is "Keen."
My guess is 18 years of being bullied.
He can just shout them away, right?

FOOS-ROH!
I sir, am offended!
I challenge you to debate!

OT: The name ain't that bad. It sounds like it's from Russia or the Netherlands (or thereabouts). Whilst "Dovahkiin the Sales Assistant" sounds a little strange it can easily be shortened to Dave (or his fallback name, Tom) and it sure as hell ain't as bad as some other names out there.
And as someone else pointed out, nobodies gonna pick up on the reference by the time he's 5, never mind by the time he's old enough to ask why his name is Russian.

Wait, what is with the bully posts? Why would he be bullied?

By the time he gets to kindergarden, 4-5 years will have passed. 4-5 year olds don't play Skyrim and they'll think it's a Serbian name or something. "Dovahkiin" is exotic, but it isn't something like naming your kid "Megatron" or "Darth Vader".

When he gets to Elementary school, kids still won't be playing Skyrim. I doubt people in grades 2-6 would play an old RPG they'll probably never have heard of.

When he gets to Highschool, Skyrim will be so far behind him that only a few hardcore RPG enthusiasts/nerds will give him a wink or a nudge and talk about how cool it is. While everyone else just knows him as "That kid who sounds like he's from Serbia". I don't see any of the logic you guys are presenting, he's not going to be bullied at all.
He is not going to be bullied because his name comes from a video game. He's going to be bullied because his name is different.

But at least he already has a kickass soundtrack to his name.

No one will make fun of his name, because they will have an axe in their head before they finish the sentence.

Wow, someone actually did this, I wonder if they'll change his name once they get the rewards?

Edit: Also if that picture is to be believed the parents have two copies of Skyrim, one for PC and one for Xbox 360, excessive much?
I got one for PC, 360, and PS3...

From now on, every single time he gets a new teacher, he'll have to tell him how to pronounce the name and then comes the obligatory "where is your name from" question, let's see how long it will take until he starts to lie about this story.

Sad to say, but yes.

http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/45309817/ns/today-today_news/t/bullying-blamed--year-old-girls-suicide/

My (step) daughter knew this girl. They would hang out and play when she was visiting her father. Very tragic and I just really don't know what else to say about it.

OT: Kids are going to bully for any reason, the name won't matter.

Seriously, being named Dovahkin isn't all that bad. Sure, it's a bit different and some thick headed people are gonna pick on him, but it's better than being named after a car. (coughMercedescough)

My thoughts exactly. Imagine how the parents will regret that name when they can't sleep because of little Dovahkiin crying all night and improving his Thu'um.

People are saying its a bad thing people will start picking on him because of his name?

By the time kids are old enough to actually give a shit what he was named after, the game will be around ten years old. I'd just be happier that kids actually remember a decent game XD

(also, it just sounds exotic. Its not like its batman, like a few people have actually called their kids)

"Hey, what's with that name, you Serbian or something?"
"No, sir, i'm American, born and bred."
"Oh..So, Serb parents, huh?"
"N-no, sir. They're American too."

Cue awkward silence, followed by being asked out. In every job interview ever.
And it's not like the kids'd easily settle without a explanation for the American kid with the Serb souding name, either.

I don't care if his parents are diehard fans.
This is NOTHING like a videogame-themed wedding.
With that, you take the flak yourself - if you're that diehard a fan, you'll live with it without losing sleep. It's self-inflicted stigma. You have nothing to blame but yourself, and so you are more likely to be able to bear it in a mentally stable manner.

But what if the kid isn't? He's had no choice in the matter. He physically cannot make a choice in the matter at this point in time, but that doesn't immediately give the green light to start fucking around with another's dignity and prospects in life.
If someone started covering their comatose father's hospital room with posters of anime or whatever, people would be outraged.
It's thoughtless and insensitive. This kid is going to have to take this name with him wherever he goes - and God help him if he gets to the stage of signing marital documents with his partner thinking he's just Tom Kellermeyer.

I wondered if someone was going to name their kid after a video game to get free games for life, most of which they probably already own. Hmm... well, I can't say much else except at least it isn't as stupid as a name as "Vault".

Dohvakiin Kellermeyer. That's a tongue-twister if I ever heard one.

"Yeah, it's spelled d-o-h-v-a-k-i-i-n. Yeah, it's the name of a hero from some 20 year old video game. I know it sounds stupid, sir. What do you mean you can't give me the job."
Jobs are not given or not because of a name. Your looks, attitude and C.V. are the ones that matter.
As a poster said above, people will think its a russian name.
