Amnesia... every fucking creak, growl, wind movement, footstep, and even the fucking ambient music made me fear that game with all my soul.

And then you have the sound of the actual monsters. as soon as i hear the "Bleargh!" I run the fuck away and shit my pants =(

Easily dozens of the sounds you hear in Amnesia: The Dark Decent. not much scarier than the things you see and hear there..

That deep bass sound in Amnesia that happens when a monster is nearby. It's scarier than the monsters themselves.

I usually don't find games scary or creepy and if there is something creepy its usually faded after the first time I hear it.

Dead Space however has a few gems to it. While most the scares like necros popping in and out, safe rooms that aren't really safe and so on you can get use to. Their are just certain undoubtedly creepy moments though.

This only happens once if I remember correctly in the beginning your in a silent corridor with two fans going about in circles making a droning noise, for all but a few seconds you'll hear a skittering across the ceiling and a shadow will race across the lights shining through the rafters. The fact this only happens once and its not constant means if you catch it your expecting something to come out the walls or come up behind you, it never does but it adds a beautiful moment of tension.

Also the whole cult level is probably one of my most favorite moments in horror games since the entire thing puts you on a slight edge.

Since someone mentioned WoW bosses, personally I find the whispers of C'thun to be the creepiest ones every designed in WoW too bad noone and I mean noone ever does those levels anymore.

Pretty much all the ambient howls and creaks from that level are daunting, but I was SO afraid to open that door...
EDIT: Also, don't know what that stupid 'pop' noise at about :20 is, but it's not there in the game. =P
Oh crap, is that from the Cradle? I hate that level because it scares the hell out of me, and I love it for the same reason.

Also; the sound a creeper in minecraft makes when it falls from a great height. Because then I know that 1: there is a damned creeper nearby, and 2: other ghoulies and ghosities are going to start flooding from the unlit area above.

When you're in the row of prison cells in Silent Hill 2 and all you hear is *plod...plod...plod...plod...grumble...*

Oh and the distant sound of the guillotine... Jeez I get chills thinking about that part of the game again...

Well, everything I had in mind has been answered, except for one.

An old school one for me, but it still tends to disturb me nowadays. The "music" that plays during the final battle of Earthbound (Mother 2). Not frightening, just...very, very disturbing. That's not even including the disturbing context of the battle itself. The music just takes it home.

The splicers creepy talk sent shivers down my spine in the original Bioshock.

Also, I hate to confess it.. but at the time when Doom 3 was released and you were walking down this dark corridor and suddenly you hear this woman behind you crying and saying something about that they took her baby away from her... Creeeepy...

The snarls of Plated Nosalises in Metro 2033 were pretty scary. Come to think of it, so were the growling sounds the Snorks made in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Feral Ghouls in Fallout 3/New Vegas. They howl and skitter.

And of course, "Jesus loves me this I know. For the Bible tells me so. Little ones to him belong, for they are weak but he is strong." from Bioshock. Yeesh, makes my skin crawl. Really, most of the splicer dialogue is really creepy. The game has great atmosphere.

"First day, they come and catch everyone.
Second day, they beat us and eat some for meat.
Third day, the men are all gnawed on again.
Fourth day, we wait and fear for our fate.
Fifth day, they return and it's another girl's turn.
Sixth day, her screams we hear in our dreams.
Seventh day, she grew as in her mouth they spew.
Eighth day, we hate it as she is violated.
Ninth day, she grins and devours her kin.
Now she does feast, as she's become the beast."

The 'CHINGGGGGG!' noise from Zero.

That, and every time Kirie appears you can hear the ropes around her neck and limbs ... creaking as they tighten ....

I love all silent hill soundtracks and sound effects but there's one sound that tops all of them. The baby cry in nightmares in Max Payne when you go the wrong way. It sounds like someone is tourturing him.

The lock on noise of a sentry in TF2 when I'm almost dead...
And the sound of a rogue or druid in cat form stealthing in WoW, it means one is close by and I'm very squishy...

Also the chainsaw from Resident Evil 4...

The ambient, background sounds in Ravenholm still make me scared. Damn you, game, and your ability to get the atmosphere you're trying to create perfect every time. I couldn't sleep the first time I completed that level, mostly due to those noises in the background haunting me. You just know you've gone and done it, woken up the hornet's nest. They're coming for you.

Possibly even more scary, though, was the sound Fast Zombies make. That horrible, wailing howl.

The most scary noise I've ever heard was the restless spirit moaning when they nearly hit you in FEAR 2.

And the sound of footsteps in Amnesia.
