Why does everyone hate scientology? It just seems like another religion...
Actually they're an "alternative to psychology." At least, that's what they say when they don't want to sound bat-shit insane regarding their worldviews.

But of course, now that they're in legal trouble, it's going to be all about "freedom of religion" and "religious rights" and whatnot.

It pisses me off when people play the religion card only when it's convenient.
Don't forget, they're just encouraging hundreds of people to not take their vitamins/depression medication/anti-psychotic medication. It's not Scientology's fault if they suddenly get sick afterward! Honestly! These nearby lawyers say so!

I can't believe it was the French who finally did it.
My faith in the french has suddenly come into exsistence, this almost makes up for the napoleanic wars; A few more and I might stop laughing about the first three weeks of WW2.

It's a bit of a slap in the face when FRANCE leads the way against a madman's cult.

well they're a religion who's copyrighted all their religious texts, they send cease and desist letters to any critic, they also sue their critics, they charge money to rise up in the ranks of the church,. i could go on about why people hate them

look up the church and their antics if you want more info
Two words. Fair Game [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_Game_%28Scientology%29].

It's always good to hear factual information about scientology, but one question is still burning me-- why on earth is a gaming website reporting this kind of stuff on their site?

Thank goodness, now we just gotta start chipping away at those crazy Christians, and finally my beautiful United States can once again be safe for secular thought.

Hang them all.
And thus, through intolerance and hatred, America turned into Ancient Rome...

"Freedom of belief doesn't mean legal immunity", from the french judge himself. This echoes another judgement from 12 years ago which pointed out whether it's a religion or not doesn't matter as far as the legal status of the frauds they've committed is concerned. But yeah, beyond that, scientology doesn't have religion status in france.

It's worth noting the french branch was almost legally dissolved over this case, because there's a law that allows to dissolve legal entities committing this kind of fraud. But there was... Well, depending on who you ask, it was either a fortuitous error or corruption, there's probably gonna be an investigation, but anyway, a very recent and quiet revision of the law contained an error that specifically prevented it from being applied to the scientology case, and that couldn't legally be corrected before the judgement.

People are finally doing something about the OBVIOUS scam/cult that is Scientology.

I mean... how oblivious do you have to be to buy into anything Scientology?

A Scientology spokeswoman said the church would appeal the verdict, calling it "an Inquisition for modern times."
Not a Spanish Inquisition then.

We can but hope. Though no doubt someone will complain that its a breech of 'freedom of speech' or something.
uhhhh I don't think france abides by our constitution. I'm sure they got their own laws and all, but, I think they do things a bit different over there.

Here here. It seems the escapist forum still hasn't gotten out of this little habit.

I am no defender of religion... but in Christianity, if you want to know any and all information there is to know about it - all you do is go to a church, ask the preacher for a Bible - he will in most cases give it to you free of charge *AND* he will most likely tell you that if there is anything you would like to know about Christianity he would be delighted to answer any questions you have - free of charge.
It'll cost you absolutely nothing, all the info is right there amd there is no secret info that the churches hide from you.

In Scientology, if you want to have access to all information regarding their religion you would have to pay tens of thousands of dollars before even reaching the lower levels of "Operating Thetan" to know the miniscule bits and pieces of what the heck Scientology is all about. It's not until you've spent near hundreds of thousands of dollars that the entire beliefs of what Scientology is revealed to you and that is after years of devotion and display of loyalty and fierce recruitment of others to Scientology.

I mean for Christ sake, Scientology has an entire branch whose sole purpose is to recruit famous and/or rich people to their church. Comparing it to Religion in general is an insult.

There's a bloody huge difference between religion - and a cult; thus why France has this particular stance on Scientology.

Remember that.

Amen to that lol, and yes i totaly agree things like this are a long time coming, most of these cults are nothing more than brainwashing money grabbing scams. And now scientology has proved itself to be nothing more.

Well to be fair, this isn't so much anti-theism as it is anti-loads of crap.

A religion that the Founder (L Ron Hubbard) admitted was a hoax on his death bed. It's like Jesus telling you that he was just yanking you chain when he was crucified. And you really got to ask, what race of intelligent beings capable would enslave humans for labor?

And Go France! They may not be a military country but they sure as hell have some lawyers with balls of titanium!

Oh good, first Scientology goes down then maybe we can take down all the other "religions" and the other religions. Also maybe we can stop Oprah, all that sensless "Green"-insert-whatever-the-hell-here, American Idol and reality TV in general and all the other sensless things treated religiously.
Also, French people, please destroy Christianity, Judism, and Islam every sect that spunoff of them, and then maybe you'll finally get some respect from the rest of the intelligent world or at least me.
