Have you ever had a "Screw This Game" moment?
Yes. All the time.
I don't seem to have any patience for games these days, it seems. I am not sure if it's me or that what passes for gameplay these days is simply terrible.
Par example: God of War. For those who've played this, I didn't get past the boat. For those who haven't played it, the opening scene takes place on a boat. I found the combat to be, well, the beat'em up genre was never one of my favorites because wailing on dudes for five minutes so the screen will scroll a little further is just tedious. And God of War is that only dressed up in fancy 3D graphics which do not impress me because everything has fancy 3D graphics.
I will say that here the camera seemed to be less of a liability than it is in some games. but the basic gameplay was still garbage. Waggle the analog stick while tapping the button as fast as you can with no discernible indication that you're having anything to do with what's happening on the screen. I felt distant from the action. Not as distant as I did when playing Demon Stone, but still worse than the Simpsons arcade game. Should a game almost twenty years old still be the standard?
This basic gameplay is broken up by other styles, including a scene where you battle a sea serpent in the hull of the ship that I actually enjoyed a bit. It even included a quick time event, but I still found it fun, so go figure that.
Then after fighting more dudes, I fought another serpent (or maybe it's the same one?) above deck. This part was terrible mainly because at one point, the serpent grabbed my guy and started crushing him in its jaws and I needed to tap a button rapidly to fight back. This was physically impossible because the speed it required was unreasonable. The only way to do it was to put the controller down on the coffee table to tap the button. It's nice to know that Sony wasted their time molding their controllers to feel comfortable in your hands so you can set it down on the table to play a game.
But the deal breaker came right after when I had to push a box at a wall so I can climb up a wall to kill more dudes. I was never very good at Pengo, and this was worse since the box explodes when the dudes shoot it with arrows. This just seemed like a weak attempt at a puzzle to try to break up the tepid action thus far, so I stopped playing.
