Someone always has to die first.
That?s the nature of this game that we play, correct? I mean, how is one to catch the killer if we don?t even know that there is a killer out there? There always has to be a sacrificial lamb. Someone?s blood always has to be spilled fruitlessly.
Why am I telling all of you this? Well, mostly because none of you will hear it.
My ghostly form surveyed the grisly scene before me as the police began forming a perimeter around the rocks lab. Signs of a struggle were only too apparent through the room. Papers had been disturbed and blood had been shed. It would only be a matter of time before the lynching would begin now. A body had been discovered.
A body and not much else, actually. See, the head was conspicuously missing.
I can?t really even tell you how fast it happened actually. It was all such a blur. One moment I?m cutting rock core samples with a diamond tipped saw and the next I hear the light tinkling of the bell from my improvised alarm behind me. My eyes instantly widened as I ducked under the slash of a knife and rolled to the other side of the room, desperately scrambling for any sort of weapon I could discover. My hand found a rock hammer; not a large weapon by any means but deadly in the hands of a geologist.
Well?deadly may not be the right word. It?s hard to be deadly when your opponent can swiftly dodge past a clumsy swing of a pick and into range for a well-placed punch to the gut. All I could do was gasp as I collapsed to the ground, the wind knocked from my lungs.
I remember the killer dragging me to my feet. I remember the killer throwing me across the room to the rock shear machine. And most of all, I remember the panic that came as my head was lowered down onto it.
You see, the rock shear machine is a large pressure plate designed to do exactly what it sounds like. It can apply enough pressure to cause rock to break apart. All things said, if this baby is cranked it can apply a cool 50,000 psi to a surface.
I don?t know how much pressure it would take to pop a human skull like a zit?but the killer now does.
When the first responders arrived hours later, they didn?t seem fazed by the gory display of ingenuity before them. This was Murderville after all?someone had to die first.
