Yes, I've heard it.
Yes, it was a fair criticism.
I reacted with mild aggression (I might be a nerd, but I happen to be a rather large nerd).
Yes, the issue of video games was brought up.

Yup. It's one of those sayings generally used by people who never leave the high school social structure behind... and later in life the exchange usually goes something like this:

"Get a life" isn't criticism. It's a last resort "insult".

I mostly hear it when I'm playing a game online. I come home from work, grab a beer, and play a game for a few hours before going to bed. I whoop ass, and some crybaby has to say "You're only good at this game because you have no life, nerd!".

That's right. I'm a lifeless nerd because I play the same game that they're playing, only I'm better.

"Get a life" has never, and never will be, a valid insult or criticism.

I heard it once when I said that I studied computer science. Then I told her that one day, when her computer doesn't work, I'll be there, and I won't help her.

I showed her who's boss!
You are officially one of my new heroes!

Hmm... yeah, I've heard that, but then used in-place of that was also "grow a pair"

some guys I know at school constantly laughed at me for only playing WoW casually, and after a week of very light playing, being level 20. Basically they made fun of me, because unlike them, I don't spend every waking moment in dungeons, "needing" items and tanking. They're both morbidly obese, and one of them recently got RSI in his hand from too much WoW. I laughed so hard...

*EDIT* I suppose if someone says get a life, I can just point them to my ubernerd medal :D

I've had it thrown at me a few times. Each time I just point at them and wave my hand over my nose a few times.

I was told to get a life by someone because I want to study medicine at university.

I'm not entirely sure what his train of thought was there, but I'm fairly sure it wasn't the most logical thing ever.

I've never been bullied, ever.

But I've always been tall and have got on pretty well with the vast majority of people all my life.

I've got a weird feeling my Mom is about to tell me this before kicking me out of the house...I am 22 after all...unemployed and waiting on call-backs. I could be doing worse though I guess.

I absolutely hate that phrase. It means nothing, is not a valid criticism and just plain makes no sense. Normally I hear it because I play videogames, which are somehow seen as a lower form of entertainment akin to beating homeless people and/or public consumption of narcotics, and so people feel the need to alert me to the fact that they percieve me as a less valid human being than they.
