Lol, what the hell? I don't even know how this happens. They just......accidentally deleted the game? There was no backup?

That's hilarious actually.

accidentally deleted during server maintenance.

how come they dont come up with backuping the game? i even backup all my documents once a week, and i never accidentally delete stuff.

The shutdown brings the whole microtransction model into question. If persistent games can disappear so abruptly, and for such an easily avoidable reason, then all of a sudden those fancy in-game items don't seem like such a solid investment. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got some hats to sell.
I support microtransactinos for a single reason: free games. i never buy stuff in microtrnasaction stores. guess im the "loss" guy for them. the only games i play money for are singleplayer. and theres way too many free online games to care. i let the rich pay for me, be it micrtransactions, ingame currency trade or whatever. And it works, just look how LOL beat WOW in hours/week played.

After reading through all of the replies, I still have one question that I honestly feel hasn't been adequately answered, but has been asked by a lot of people, including the first replier.

Wait... So... They deleted the game off of their servers?

How does this happen, exactly?

Someone gonna get fired..

Surely they have a backup? Considering it gets drilled into IT students heads everyday at college/university, surely the "professionals" would know to make back ups?

Considering this is the first I even heard of this game, I am curious how many people are being let down by this?

I doubt they have to make the effort, as most likely the entire development company is just going to be dissolved.

no backups for a online MMO isn't so much a mistake as highly, highly suspicious.

Wait, MMO's normally not only have their pieces spread out over multiple servers in the bank, they normally have multiple copies of that information on multiple clusters of server banks. HOW CAN YOU DELETE MULTIPLE PARTS IN MULTIPLE PLACES ON ACCIDENT!!?

We were taught "SAVE YOUR WORK" from the first time we encountered computers in school. And that was for second grade word processing stuff.

Yeah, if someone pays you real-world money for a micro-transaction, you really need a record of that. Maybe not the pixels themselves, but at least a reciept for what items were bought so you can hand them out again later. Even a bank account statement for what people paid you would do, if you can process it.

And you need to guard that information with your life.

Because telling people, "Oops, we lost your stuff, feel free to buy it again, though," is a QUICK route to bankruptcy. If not having an angry mob outside your door.
