I have learned of the Salton Sea. The result of a disaster in California where a canal burst and dumped water into a desert basin. Over time the lake developed into a saltwater sea due to runoff from nearby farms carrying fertilizer and all sorts of other fun crud. Between drought settling in and everyone getting way more careful with water the sea started to dry up, and combined with the high salt content and toxic contamination from the runoff and the sea basically turned into a toxic cesspool. Mass fish and bird die-offs are apparently semi-regular, and only a few species can survive there anymore anyway as it is now about 25% saltier than the ocean, and getting 3% saltier per year.

I love how someone found the upside in the "scent of death and decay." That's an optimist if ever there was one. Being a cynic is actually entertaining sometimes.
