Then what use are you to anyone or anything? You don't buy into your own existence, or anything else for that matter. Why should anyone care about you?Gormourn said:I see no problem with that suggestion. Too bad I'm not a fan of RPGs in general.Captain Picard said:What isn't?Gormourn said:Well, I'm happy to let you know - it isn't.Captain Picard said:Life must be hollow when the ground under your feet isn't a fact of reality, and you've not the ability to make any meaningful change to anything, since nothing is "real".
If reality isn't a fact, then why not play RPGs all day? They're just as real as the rest of your life, if this is what you believe.
And too bad, whether this is a reality or simply a delusion, that I appear to have certain physical requirements like breathing, eating, and other things which can only be resolved with money, the best way (as in, least risky) to get which is to work.
"the truth" is the truthBarakiel said:I suppose, in a way, you could think yourself correct, and I may clarify.Gxas said:Is that not the same thing? I tell what the truth is based on evidence and facts. I don't see any difference between the way I worded your question and the way you worded it.
I ask you, without context, without fact.
What is "the truth"
Another athiest D:Gxas said:Provide a lot of evidence and support, there you go. Truth. Provide none, I won't consider your proposition.
Very Kantian saying, well said.henritje said:thruth is what you percieve as the thruth
Believing that there isn't a defined purpose or goal for one's existence is one thing. Believing that your own existence isn't true (a fact of reality) is another thing. If one believes their own or all existence isn't an incontrovertible fact of the universe, then it would follow that there is no difference between "existing" or "not existing". Therefore, the logical thing would be for them to be indifferent to whether or not they "live" or "die" right here, right now.Gormourn said:I don't remember saying anything about "not buying into my own existence". I did, however, regard it as a possibility. As a nihilist, I do believe that everything is meaningless in the end.Captain Picard said:Then what use are you to anyone or anything? Which doesn't mean that I should kill myself because I think life is meaningless, like some people might have suggested. Just because something has no greater meaning doesn't mean it's not fun to play with it. And since I'm pretty sure death is non-existence, having the chance to exist is worth using, especially considering the odds of my or your own existence. Because non-existence is gonna come either way.
Why should anyone care about you? Dunno, why? Why should I care about them?
Doing things that are fun and/or interesting is a good way to spend your meaningless journey.
And just for clarification, when I do say "Everything is meaningless" what I mean is 'It lacks a goal". Humanity might die out. So what? Humanity might populate the whole galaxy. So what? I don't see it as a final goal, it's just progression. Feel free to participate or don't.
I guess if we have to allude to games - a defined goal is what you get in the end of a closed-off linear game. What we have is a giant sandbox, without a final quest or boss fight or whatever. Whatever you do is up to you and up to you only, and it will be destroyed sooner or later - be it heat death or another big bang. So, uhh, have fun.
