So if they're putting PS2 games on PSN, this means that they're going to be adding software emulation to the console right? Which means I can finally play my old PS2 games on my PS3 right... right?

... didn't think so.

Oh well this is still pretty cool. I never played God Hand before, but I have seen the game and it's hilarious. I might pick this up sometime.

Ok this is cool I have to agree, but one question. Can I play my old PS2 games on my new PS3 (slim model) if they are bringing these on the PSN? I have a lot of PS2 games I would like to play and I don't want my PS2 dying and me not having the PS2 to PS3 adapter thingy
I'm fairly sure PS3s used a special part needed to read and play PS2 games which is something they removed among other things to lower costs, so I guess it's not likely they can't have an update to permit PS2 games on disc becoming playable.
They removed the emotion chip so it can't do hardware emulation (Like the Wii does for GameCune Games), but news like this sounds like they are going to implement a form of software emulation (Like the Xbox 360 does for old Xbox games) so maybe it would let us use are old PS2 games. Because I would be miffed having to re-buy and even hoping that the games I do want come out on the PSN, just because they won't do a form of software emulation.
Trust me I'd love for that to happen I'm in the same boat as you,I'm just saying don't get your hopes to high... the fall can sting a bit.
After Nintendo refusing to localize certain RPGs to the US that people are begging for (The 3 on the Wii that I can't remember at the moment and the Mother games) I'm used to falls on my face like that. Also if I remember right some PS3 models can do software emulation.
DO you mean the originally released systems in the first year? yeah they were marketed as fully compatible but when they had to lower the price, If you mean that later models that can be "modded" physically and/or digitally to play ps2 games I've never heard of it though I wasn't really looking.

So the Prince of Persia games available to download on PSN aren't PS2 games?

Don't get me wrong, this all sounds rather neat, but I swear I've seen PS2 games on PSN before.

On October 4, Sony will launch the "Only on PlayStation Network" initiative, which will wheel out exclusive content and price promotions on a weekly basis. Its first offering will include a number of peculiar PS2 titles, marking the first time that PS2 games will be available for download on PSN.
Except that you can already get some ps2 games on the PSN. All three ps2 prince of persia games are on their as well as god of war 1 & 2 and it would not surprise me if their were others.
For a moment I thought I was alone in this.

I remember people complaining how some games didn't "play" right on some forums and you can't mention the word "modded" without getting banned.

Ring of Red.
Wait, what? I loved this game to death when it came out. Really awesome title, despite the shoddy translation. But it came so early in the PS2's lifecycle, and flew so far under the radar even back then that I often wonder if I'm the only person to have ever played it. Never thought I'd see it get a re-release in any form, but that is great.
I still own it.... and many of these games. There is no need for me to re-buy games that I already own.

Now just release the .Hack series and the Zone of the Enders games and I'll be happy.

edit: I might even buy a PS3 to play them on.

That is pretty cool. It´s good to be able to re-play our favourite games from the last gen consoles. Now if only someone could find a way to get Shenmue 1 and 2 on the PSN...

This is one of the many times I wish I had money.

On the upside, it helps me decide which console is going to be my main console.

Oh...now I need more memory...and a bigger budget.

I still have and enjoy my PS2, but I'm glad to see Sony make a smart business decision and expand access to the fantastic games libraries its consoles have amassed over the years. I wish they were a little more confident/less stingy with their North American releases of older games, but it looks like they're gaining confidence with digital distribution.

Cool, I might have to check a few of these out. Only problem is I have become so short fused when it comes to these older games, I lose my interest so damn fast I rarely finish them. Just take Castlevania: Harmony of Despair for instance, I just can't seem to make myself keep playing it for some reason. I think it might have a lot to do with all the sweet games coming out in the next few months. Maybe during the lull later next year I'll get back into all these older games...

I have bought more PS1 games off of the PSN than actual PS3 games in the last two years.

Doesn't look like that's going to change.

So glad PS2 titles are finally coming to the PSN.

I knew they would start putting awesome ps2 titles on psn! Keep it up sony and be a bit liberal about who gets nominated to the psn store. Some people might actually be interested in a couple of old dynasty warriors games being available on the psn. Also Odin Sphere. Awesome.
