why don't sony let me play them on the ps3 without me having to rebuy them again.
Hell, I'd even pay for a download of the emulator, as it is an extra feature.
@HUYI82: .. you answered your own question. Bolded for clarity.
@Mandalore_15: Except its not an extra feature. It was an original selling point that got removed with only the flimsiest of justifications.

So if they are selling PS2 titles on PSN can we finally say it? Sony removed PS2 functionality from PS3s not because of hardware/software limitations, but because the intention was to make people rebuy what they had already bought. With this there is now basically no chance that the stolen PS2 emulator (at least the software level) will never be restored. It was never about the hardware emulator being too expensive or the software emulator being insufficient. Its about money.

If you really want to play your Ps2 games so much, why not just play them on your Ps2? They aren't hard to find.
Except that PS2s themselves were not very durable and many of them broke over time, so theres not as many as one might think and for many people it would mean purchasing another PS2.
Also its important to recognize the difference of technology between then and now. Whereas many tvs are HDTV and many consoles are connected to HDTVs via HDMI ports, the PS2 is ran via antiquated RCA plugs that honestly really do a number on the A/V feed. So personally even buying a PS2 recently I would rather run a PS2 title through a PS3 than to run it through a PS2 simply because I would like to be able to see what the developers actually put there as opposed to over contrasted blurry images that represent what was originally put onto disc and hear the sounds without the added analog hum.
TL;DERP
It is what it always is, about money and how much more of yours Sony feels entitled to.
