How can we as gamers possibly be happy that Sony gets sued.
I mean, IF they end up losing, the money they lose is going to come from somewhere?

Whatever the consequence is, it won't be good for us in the long run.
And by us, I mean gamers with a PS3.

Am I the only one that's a little pissed that somehow I'm included in all this?

Look, I don't give a shit about lawsuits or any of the other speculative bullshit I've been reading for the past few days right now. I just want to know if I need to change my credit card or not, who did it, and when is this all gonna be fixed!
Definitely don't change your card (why put another in danger) and I wouldn't even bother canceling the one you use.
What I would do is call your credit card company and see if they can sign you up to a credit monitoring service if you aren't already. It usually costs a little less than $10 a month and from this it looks like you might be able to get Sony to pay for it... eventually. And if you're already signed onto something like that with another card, that plan probably covers your other cards.

The problem with this isn't so much the credit card (you're insured for that: I wouldn't even worry about the card specifically) but the personal info (name, address, email, and password/security questions if you use the same password/SQ for many things) which can be used to take out credit cards you don't even know about or loans.

Just make sure that you never use your Debit card for things like this and you should be okay. Credit card balances are always insured. The cash in your bank account isn't always insured... even if your bank assures you that it is.

Once again, this advise comes from Frank Abagnale (Catch me if you Can) and that guy is a genius when it comes to this stuff.
Thanks for the info. I knew about some of that, but not all of it. Cheers!

Its funny, to think that this might not have happened if they didn't go all commando on Geohotz. Although, it is impossible to say for sure, I just have a feeling that someone is trying to exact their own justice on them.

I sure hope once Sony dies from this that I can finally play Ratchet & Clank on my Xbox 360... seriously, Ratchet & Clank + Uncharted are the only reasons why I even play my PS3!
What...really? You want SONY to die just because you only like two of the games on their system? There is so much wrong with that statement I don't even know were to begin...

No, I am pretty mad about this too. I just wanna know if I gotta worry about someone claiming to be me or not. And to make matters slightly worse for us all, I bet its only a matter of time before someone uses this as an anti-gaming rally cry...

If it's one thing americans like more than bombing poor people, it's suing for a quick buck. I for one want no part of it.
This is a world wide event, I'm sure this is just the beginning. If anything you should applaud these guys for being so on the ball.

Don't worry guys, Phoenix Wright is on the case!

OT: I really hope they catch the hackers in this case, and sue THEM to oblivion
Yeah. I really don't want to see Sony go under. It would be a shame.

I hope to God that's not what's gonna happen. If anyone uses this as an anti-gaming example they really need to get a life and be ashamed of themselves.

Don't get me wrong, I'm irritated at Sony, but I've been a loyal Playstation gamer since the off, and at this rate, I can see them declaring bankruptcy in the forseeable future.

I think the hackers will more likely have the crap beaten out of them AND then be sued

Having kept half an eye on all the happenings with Sony, one could say that they kind of had it coming. On the other hand, it doesn't seem entirely fair that the company has to pay up for being the victim of hackers. From my limited perspective it looks like less than criminal negligence on their part.

It would be interesting to know the motives of the hackers, though. And whether they have a heart. If it was some part of the hacker not-quite-hivemind calling themselves Anonymous, you'd expect some sort of claim of responsibility, not mass identity theft. If this does turn out to lead to credit card fraud for the PSN users, I think it's likelier that these are just run-of-the-mill criminals.

I am not one to defend Sony, but I think if a major corporation does get hacked, you can't assume negligence right off the bat. They have billions of dollars at risk so you have to think they have very strong safeguards in place to stop the average and above-average hacker. This hack was done by a pro, maybe even someone on the inside that knows how the system works. No system is 100% safe from infiltration.

I am getting a little pissed at how much illicit internet activity is going on publicly now. We have very vocal, very anonymous people out tearing down websites and collecting personal information of heads of corporations (there is no such thing the as "the anonymous group" only "an anonymous group". The media likes to think the former cause it's easier for old farts to understand and imagine a group of young whippersnappers robbing banks and causing mischief on the mysterious interwebs) and they are seemingly unstoppable. They are Cyber-Terrorists, lets call them what they are. We have not seen the likes of a group like this ever and it was only bound to happen. What makes them unique is they aren't a certain race, a certain country or even a certain religion. They are just anonymous people who share common interest about how they feel the world should conduct business and I think they are getting all but too powerful.

OT: Don't waste time suing Sony and go after the real bad guys, the fuckers who hacked Sony in the first place.

^^ They are having their problems too. Not quite as bad but I am sure what has been done to Sony could be done to MS.

How will this help the situation?
That's what I've been thinking. Shouldn't we be focusing on finding the alleged hackers (if that is the case) than attacking Sony?
Plus how is attacking Sony going to get PSN back any sooner?

I would've agreed with you in the past about less than criminal negligence but they knew that their system was vulnerable when earlier this month Anon attacked them. This attack showed a weakness within their system and it was their responsibility to prevent future attacks from occurring. They failed at this and thus should be held accountable.

That being said, please don't let SONY die from this.

Between this, the delayed release of the next-gen PSP due to the Japan earthquakes, and all the negative publicity they got from the Geohot debacle, I'm starting to wonder if there's going to be anything left of Sony when all is said and done.

I mean, it's hard to see how things could possibly get any worse for them right now. Not that it bothers me. It's just like the BP oil spill. If Sony ends up getting eaten alive by litigation and government penalties due to their own negligence, then I, for one, will not lose a wink of sleep.
