Sony's PSN Apology Includes Free Games

Sony wants to win back your support following the recent PlayStation Network outage, and it's hoping free games and movies will do the trick.

The latest update to the official PlayStation blog details Sony's plan to offer gamers a mea culpa that it diplomatically dubs the "Welcome Back" program.

Key to this goodwill grab is a selection of free downloadable games on offer to PlayStation 3 and PSP owners. Sony explains:

All PlayStation Network customers can select two PS3 games from the following list. The games will be available for 30 days shortly after PlayStation Store is restored and can be kept forever.

Dead Nation
inFAMOUS
LittleBigPlanet
Super Stardust HD
Wipeout HD + Fury

For PSP owners, you will be eligible to download two PSP games from the following list. The games will be available for 30 days shortly after PlayStation Store is restored and can be kept forever.

LittleBigPlanet
ModNation Racers
Pursuit Force
Killzone Liberation

Additionally, the plan's offerings include free movie rentals, 30 days of free PSN Plus service and a number of free virtual items for Sony's PlayStation Home service. Different plans are available for gamers in Latin America [http://blog.eu.playstation.com/], but the core concept of "free stuff" remains the same across the globe.

So boys and girls, is this timely show of generosity enough to win back whatever PlayStation brand-loyalty you may have had before the nearly month-long PSN outage [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109448-PSN-Down-Worldwide-Is-Anonymous-to-Blame], or was that time enough to drive you forever into the electronic embrace of Sony's competitors?

I'll take Super Stardust HD, Wipeout HD + Fury, LittleBigPlanet, and ModNation Racers. I never really left Sony. I just got to enjoy my Live subscription for a little bit in the PSN down time. Glad to have it up and running again, and I'm certainly glad to see that Sony is trying to make it up to its users.

I think this is an exceptionally generous gesture, especially considering that for the vast majority of PSN users the Playstation network was free in the first place (excluding PSN Plus of course).

I already got InFamous and LBP. I know I'm getting Super Stardust HD. What's better, Dead Nation, or Wipeout HD?

I like the PS home free items, I hang there a lot

But still. Even though they are giving us free games, what about those who lost their accounts? Do they get nothing?

I just bought, beat and sold inFamous like 2 weeks before PSN went down. I guess this'll give me a chance to finish the infamous side of the story since I found the game overall to be underwhelming. This is surprising though as many people including myself expected the free games to be shit games. Kudos Sony, kudos.

That seems fair. Really my biggest issue with Sony was how long it took them to admit there was a problem. They don't have to shower me with gifts (but it helps).

Well well well sony you surprised me, triple A titles? And here i thought you were gonna have a bunch of games that no one would want to play. Well i was wrong, now if you would bring up the ps store you can seal the deal.

inFamopus and Wipeout are my choices. Others I already have, or do not want.

Was reading the PSBlog thing and for a moment, I was afraid that it was for the US and Canada only. That would have angered the living christ out of me. Then I saw there were things also for Europe, which includes NZ (YAY!).

Now, that's nice. I think that once I have a home without a console (no Wii or 360) I'll get a PlayStation console (or PSP2).

How about you just give me the Black Ops Escalation Map pack and Battlefield Bad Company 2: Vietnam instead? I'd appreciate that, the only game of that list that I'm interested in in InFAMOUS, and thats a 'meh' kind of interest.

Yes, and what about the people who brought PSN plus already? I hope we get the free one month plus another month to make up for what we lost. Also the games on here are nothing to brag about. Most of then are old titles that have been out for a long time. I think they should give the people who actually had credit cards on there more of a bonus then those who did not. That's just me and it seems fair but hey life is never fair.

My question is this. I have used PSN to buy games and stuff for my PSP. If I bought a PS3 now, would I be eligable to download the free PS3 games instead of the PSP games? If so.. I think I may just have to purchase a PS3
id think as long as you have an account you can download it within the next 30 days since to not do that could alienate new customers that they might want to keep
According to the europe blog, you had to have had an account from at least the 20th April 2011 (which I'm assuming is before the downtime happened). It makes sense to me: no reason to give away free stuff to someone who wasn't affected by the problem.

The people who already have PSN Plus get it for sixty days according to the europe blog. I assume it will be the same everywhere.

Thanks for clearing that up for me.
