Gotta wonder if Lamar Smith went behind the backs of other House Members for this. After all, I imagine the RIAA and the MPAA are throwing money at him to keep their pet bill alive. I really hope Mr. Smith gets thrown out of office this year.

Foreign thieves...?

The American consumer probably does the most pirating of anyone >_>

It's total bullshit anyway. I'm not a conspiracy theorist but this is just the government taking a shot at the first amendment trying to control the populace even more.

As long as the cost of trying to stop Piracy doesn't overcome that of the imaginary sums they are going to save on it, there will be a fight to stop it. This is what happens when you have a US president that focuses more on improving conditions in the US than going to war with everything that moves. ;P

When you are all sitting at home, bored, with nothing to do. Just remember I called this!

[sub]If Yahtzee gets to take credit for calling something, so do I![/sub]

And we will continue to raise hell about this bill and anything like it until you back down. You will not break the internet and you will be reminded that you work for us and our desires, the American People, not "industry representatives".

By the way -
Pretty damn cool how Google and Wikipedia are participating in the blackout.

I like how Google's blackout is to put a big black bar over their logo...

Fantastic. It'd be nice if the entertainment industry justly got all the revenue it deserves whilst just asking for billion dollar empires to be more proactive in the fight against piracy. Maybe the internet is a tame-able beast?

What jobs is he talking about? Won't SOPA destory all kinds of jobs like some of the ones people on the escapist have?
Nope it won't destroy anything that isn't infringing on copyright. The Bill is so tightly worded that it really can only be used against torrent sites, tv show links and so on. Forums, youtube and so on will be safe; people just want you to believe they aren't and hope you haven't read the bill for yourself.
I read through the bill and it isn't tightly worded in slightest. Apparently, one of us is lying out of their arse. It will basically shut down any and all posters of copyright without discrimination, all that needs to be filed is a claim of copyright infringing, site shuts down and persecutors I.E. the staff have a chance to be put in jail.

Apparently doll you haven't read it through enough, or read in between the lines. A tightly worded bill would have every gap covered, here, if I say that this person took something from Cartoon Network, without even a thought, bam, the site is dead in the ground, at least under Sopa thats what will happen.

I wish I could properly explain how the US Congress works to The Escapist community. How many of you actually know what markup is? I can tell you that markup is NOT where proponents of this bill want it to go. I can tell you that its chances of revival in this congressional term are slim and that this is a huge setback.

But you won't believe me.

Because the internet is for OMG!, not intelligent conversation.

As someone who works in legislative law, SOPA and PIPA (by proxy) are dead. Of course, anything can rear its head again, but for now it is over. Good job. You people made my work SOOOOOOOOO much easier.

Thanks.
Thank Zombie Jesus, someone actually said this. Its basically in a coma but can still come back if theres enough push.

We pirate their shit, they pirate our shit and we all get along. Right?

Oh shit I forgot about money well since it's not real lets just give everybody high numbers that'll work just like money.

Wait rich people won't like that? Aww fucking hell back to square one...
You managed to throw in fiat money into the SOPA argument, I think I like you :)

I don't think anyone really thought SOPA was dead yet (as in what it stands for).

If it does pass (and i assume it will, eventually, in some context because of all the money involved) they won't go after youtube, facebook, and sites like the escapist -at first- but overtime the internet will not be the wonderful and maddening place it is today.

Eventually, they'll start turning the lights off.

I thought they were going to let SOPA die and quickly pass PIPA before us "plebs" could rally against it.

Urgh that guy fills me with contempt as someone who has never had to face their liberties jeopardized... It's like he doesn't even fucking realize what he's doing, it's almost adorable in a twisted, utterly dumbass sense.

I've been to countries where something like this is in effect.

Let me tell you now, the ABUSE that goes on with it...

Entire websites just flat out censored for no adequately explained reason, sites that are quality of life websites! Google. Deviantart. Twitter. Hell the Escapist I had to I.P. route for a week too.

And guess what, the government don't have to give you a decent explanation either, they just throw up their bill and give you a gigantic middle finger until the cause of the block is investigated, which can take months.

EXTERMINATUS- The only way to be sure.

Possible pre-emptive countermeasures aside, sadly this shit will fly eventually and it will not be pretty.
Like the creeping darkness it shall come. When the stars in the night sky shine no more, everywhere you look, nothing but the dark cold void.

About Tor... I'm aware that it's pretty much the most privacy-friendly browser out there at the moment, but is there a way to use it without sacrificing YouTube or Channel Awesome? It seems to be a pretty bare-bones set of tools *precisely* because that simplicity enforces security, but I'd like to know I've still got a smidge more flexibility.
There is a guide on their website on how to run Youtube with it. Yet it even then takes ages to load. So I would use it if you need to but if you don't just surf normally.

So in other words the huge mega corporations who are bank rolling this bill decided to cut another check? If you stand outside congress you can actually hear the sound of the check being torn out of the checkbook. Looks like we have to take up the crusade again.
