Am I? For all we know the kid died of a heart attack or something entirely unrelated to his gaming binge (because as the article itself notes, a 12 hour gaming binge doesn't tend to kill teenagers) and we have people in this thread celebrating his death.

On the one hand we have people who are the victims of theft who have forum users screaming for the thief's blood, and here we have a person who died and has people expressing joy at it.

Seems more like I'm comparing tangerines and clementines to me.

I wonder how long it'll be before someone seizes on this and proclaims gaming to be dangerous?

He just happened to be playing games at the time! People drop dead all the time shopping, washing the car or eating salad! Dont see people talking about the dangers of shopping, washing the car and salad!! Shame when anyone dies but to be honest if all lived forever the world would be a gross wriggling mass of bodies! Fuck that!

I'd hate to be his family members. Imagine explaining that to people. They probably get laughed at a lot.

Can't balance/control your behaviour regarding gaming? I have no sympathy, I just hope the Game Industry won't get flak for this yet again.
Same, I actually laughed. It seems insensitive but if he's that kind of person then quite frankly, no life has gone to waste.

The point was, you dont die after 12 hours unless you're a complete dumbass xD And I try to limit extended periods of gaming cuz i dont want to fuck up my eyes too much :p.
Oh thats when I was a kid playing Red Alert 1, theres no way I could do it now lol (now would I be stupid enough to try again lol).
I agree, theres more than just 12hrs of gaming to cause him to drop dead like that.

The title of this article is sort of misleading, and it's leading to some annoying comments here.

As the article points out, it's unclear (even unlikely?) if the gaming binge directly caused his death.
How is the title misleading at all? Kid died after twelve hour gaming binge. Says that in title. Kid collapsed while playing (insert Star Craft) for twelve hours straight. No one is saying the zerg is what did him in.
It's misleading because it suggests that gaming killed him, instead of gaming just being almost the last thing he did before he died.

And also because it's generating all of these "Well I've played for X hours straight and felt fine" comments. Which sort of miss the point.

It's nice to see that there's at least one sane person in this thread. I tip my hat to you.

Well the celebration of his death is just moronic, but it would be on par if someone inflicted harm on him such as poisoning him during his "snack" or did something to negatively affect him. There are probably no outside factors which doesn't make it less tragic, just different. The boy was not taken advantage of like those in the other articles you mentioned.

He should have been able to do that without eating or drinking for at least two days before collapsing, on average.
Assuming he was well nourished, fed, watered, rested etc. before his binge, sure. There's far too little information about his habits beforehand (information that is unlikely to ever come to light) to draw any realy conclusions.

Nice to see people mocking the dead kid and bragging about how they could go for longer. How many of you guys were screaming for blood over the "Guy steals consoles from sick kids" and "Guy steals Gameboy from dead kid" stories, hmm?
I cast a fair difference between them, though. One is someone dying out of their own actions (or not, but then it'd be a non-story anyway), while the other is someone taking advantage of someone already deaad or dying. It's nothing like the same.

I wasn't trying to boast I lasted longer btw, I hated the fact I lost three days to a blur of absolutely fuck-all. I'm just pointing out the fact that 12 hours is far too short to kill all but the weakest person. Thus, it couldn't have been the gaming binge that killed him.

Hold on a tick ....

After only 12 hours? I mean it's doubtful anybody killed him ... but surely there is more at work than just vg addiction.

I can understand that you can have accumulative injury from repetitive gaming sessions day in, day out. But it still sounds a bit suspect that he died in a room, whilst in the company of others.

I agree with Logan ... kid was on something.

I doubt he ducked off to just have a meal.

The dead kid whose Gameboy was stolen from his coffin was "taken advantage of"? I can't see how. Please elaborate.

That second paragraph of mine was more in general towards the thread, just didn't feel like quoting anyone else.

20 hours here, I only stopped long enough to eat and use the bathroom, Iwsn't even tired at the end, I did hear the Final Fantasy overworld theme whenever I closed my eyes though.
Hah, yeah. My first 12 hour was playing Halflife 1. I'd been playin it for quite some time and my mom popped her head in the door and told me lunch was ready. I was going to turn my head too look at her but instead moved the mouse to turn my head. ;)
