Square-Enix Isn't Sure Where to Take Final Fantasy

sigh

I am one of those that is thinking that Squeenix is going down hill. XIII, while interesting and actually had a decent story, lacked in the storyTELLING. In medias res with no exposition was simply not a good way to convey their message. Personally, I think Square should look to the past for their new games. JRPGs are always story and character driven, not open-ended character creation engines like Western RPGs. That's their market, that should never change.

When FFVI was release, we saw that instead of solely fantastical medievalism like the previous games, Square set their game in early industrial revolution with a central theme being progress in technology versus a more natural and magical world. VII saw that technology had won and then VIII dropped the ball by being to sci-fi and not enough fantasy (and REALLY uninteresting characters, imo). So What was the next game on the docket? FFIX, a freaking awesome throwback to their classical game stylings.

I'm not saying that the setting can't be futuristic or technological, but that with each new iteration of the series, Square seems is refining and refining until it's unrecognizable from what many of us loved about the early games...you know, the games that made them a successful company and made it so that a release of a new Final Fantasy was cause to close the banks and government buildings in Japan.

An accessible, compelling story with easy to use combat. Better characterization, or at least characters we don't want to let be anal-raped by a Bomb.

Hell, they should just follow Dragon Quest/Warrior's model, and not change a single damn thing.

Honestly, I think Sakaguchi leaving SE was the worst thing that ever happened to them. The shit he's squeezed out at Mistwalker hasn't been much better
I disagree; but I'm not going to try and argue over opinion - I can see why you might dislike Blue Dragon; but not Lost Odyssey (as in the story-telling aspect) when compared to the Final Fantasy games you listed as enjoying. Lost Odyssey is easily the closest game this gen to a purists Final Fantasy game; and, in my opinion, a fantastic game in its own right.

So for where to go from here? I'd say a huge in-house purge, a self-reflective monastic retreat, a white-washing of the bizarre aesthetic Nomura has tainted everything with, bring back Sakaguchi (or somebody like him) and try to make something good.
Good is subjective; and that's the problem with the Final Fantasy series; and the reason Square have no idea where to take it. Everyone has a different opinion on what a Final Fantasy game should be; you look and just in this topic some loved FFXIII, some hated it - some liked VII; some don't - there's such a divide within the fan-base into small groups of fans that hold a certain game above the others that the perfect game cannot be created. If anything the fact the series constantly innovated itself has come back to haunt it...

I honestly have a good idea on where to take Final Fantasy... off the shelves. Horrible overrated trash all of them.

However Lost Odyssey on the other hand (made by the creator of FF) is magnificent. Good Job Mistwalker Entertainment.

Eureka, Why dont Squeenix just publish the game and let another company develop it?

The problem with what Square has been doing with Final Fantasy, is that they were, well, making it NOT Final Fantasy.

They should have learned by now that just by title alone, they're not going to appeal to some demographics, and by the sounds of it, they're concerned about why fans are disliking the newer ones.

I think Square needs to go back to Square One (See what I did there? Square? Ha! I'm so clever.) Long-time fans dislike the new Final Fantasies; which are talked about like hated red-headed step-children, because they're simply not Final Fantasy anymore. Square kept tweaking and tweaking and tweaking for people who didn't play in the first place, and the true fans have suffered.

Final Fantasy 1 was damn good, and it still is. I disliked 8, but I generally liked them all until 10, with 6 & 7 being my favorites.

So, my ideas:
~Get back the turn-based combat
~Stop making everything look like a goddamn J-pop video
~Put in less cut-scenes/voices, to make shit less annoying, save money, and start churning these things out once every 2 years again. Hell! I LOVE sprites! Do you guys like sprites!? Let's go with sprites!

That is all.

PS. You're not Hideo Kojima. Stop trying to be so.

If they want to get peoples interest and trust back then they should just remake ff7 especially if they say they listen to fans.

FF has always been a love/hate series. People will buy it because they like it, and not if they don't regardless of how they play. I've been a fan for some time now, and even though I didn't enjoy FF13 as much as past FF's, I would still probably buy a future release. I still replay FF6-10 every once in a while and 12 was decent.

Any series that goes for so long, is bound to hit a slump. Ala Batman movies with directors: Burton to Schumacher to Nolan (guess which was the slump). And games, well Sonic lost flavor years ago, and lets face it, Mario has been loosing steam too.

Spin-offs like Kingdom Hearts are still good and going strong. I think maybe they need to go off a similar wings and have a reboot, and a refresh.

While alot of people are calling for a FF7 remake, why not capitalize on rejigging all the old, make a set of updated new gen versions of the old FF's. I don't think fans would be being ripped off as they would love to have old favorites, updated to current game technology. They've already done half of them for the DS.

Who can say. Maybe it is time to let go. But the aforementioned reboot could be a last hoorah and thanks to the fans for being supportive all these years.

I think it should stay a JRPG, but try to do something different. Like having a protagonist who is very mean, perhaps even sadistic, all the way through the game (by that I mean he remains a prick to some degree until the very end). Also, include romance and check out the combat system of Grandia II and/or Kingdom Hearts.

This!

FF needed to die after their 10th installation! It's about fucking time they realized they can't go anywhere but further down the shitter if they continue with this!

I enjoyed Final Fantasy XIII, I had fun playing it. It could have easily had been called "Last Phantasia" and been the same to me though as didn't feel like Final Fantasy that much (I grew up on II and III or IV and VI on SNES).

I like JRPGs, I have for years, I don't need them changed. I'm fine with all the tenants of cliches of the genre. I'd love a Persona 5 or Grandia IV on my PS3 sometime in the next year or so.

What I do want is someone to actually make JRPGs for PS3. Where are they?

Slim pickings and we're coming up on its 4th anniversary.

The shelf?

Well that was cheap. In all seriousness XIII wasn't such a bad game, it just wasn't the game that was expected.
Arguably that can be a good or bad thing.

You mean aside from Disgaea 3, WKC, FFXIII, SO4, Argarest War, Demon's Souls, Cross Edge, Valkyria Chronicles, Vandal Hearts, Eternal Sonata, Enchanted Arms, Last Rebellion, Nier, Resonance of Fate?

Trinity Universe is out. (I'm enjoying this one currently).
Atelier Rorona is on the way.

Ar Tornelico III has been announced
http://scrawlfx.com/2010/07/ar-tonelico-3-dated-for-the-north-america

Yeah, there is a serious dearth of JRPGs on PS3 [/sarcasm]

EDIT: And this:
http://scrawlfx.com/2010/07/disgaea-4-officially-announced-for-ps3
Disgaea 4! Oh yeah! Glad I bitched if I get to find that out! [/self deprecation with bit of genuine gratitude]

Hey, did you play Ar Tonelico 1? I ask because I swear the game is broken where if you miss an item about mid way through you have to restart it and make sure not to miss it. Enjoyed it up to the point.

Honestly though, that list isn't really exciting to me. Mix of strategy (Valkyria), action (Nier) and just some poor ones (Last Rebellion). I really enjoy old style straight forward JRPGs.

But hey, if you're my JRPG informant, we're cool s69-5. I'll check out Trinity Universe.

I think if they want to improve Final Fantasy, They need to look back about 15 years to see what they did right back then. JRPGs have evolved into something horribly bland and cookie-cutter. I feel that they are even more stagnant than the FPS genre because there are less ways to tackle the gameplay.

Granted, I don't have a good answer to what made the games of the SNES and PSX era so good, but I think the quality of the stories was a big thing. Look at Chrono Trigger and how the game lead you into saving a princess from a threat which lead into saving a kingdom which lead into saving the world from a villain that never would have affected their own lives had they done nothing. The player is being constantly drawn into a greater challenge in the story and it is kept interesting. I stopped playing modern JRPGs because it's always the same bland, unimaginative male character wearing girls makeup and clothing spending the next 40+ hours of saving a girl wearing whore's clothing.
