Square-Enix Isn't Sure Where to Take Final Fantasy

This thread is still going? So many people say, "Look back to the past" but if you think about from a marketing standpoint there's no profit in that. The consumers with a lot of purchasing power nowadays are young women and I believe they are the audience SquareEnix was marketing towards.

Also just because the title is Final Fantasy doesn't mean it has to have all "fantasy" genre elements (knights, princess, mages, dragons, etc.) I cannot stand that medieval crap!

I'd say that they should really work with their subject matter. On top of the linearity, FF has become radically different from where it started. I'd kind of like to see them put the FANTASY back in the series. We don't need stupid guns and airships, it ruins the purpose of the whole genre. Oh and get a better dialog system. Be more like Bioware, just a tad, for the love of god.

I feel he should maybe let the title just die instead of keeping it alive on live support to keep a selfish lover happy.

All I know, is for the first time ever, I'm genuinely engaging with an FF game's protagonists as I play XIII. They're flawed and in many ways not likeable, sure, but I still wanna see what happens and how they interact with each other (and I'm rapidly approaching the end, normally well-past cut-off point for what little non-exposition character development FF's usually contain).

Lovely graphics, fun plot and setting, nice battle system.. but for /once/ it's a character-driven story instead of an epic plot that happens to have characters in it. In my opinion. Even /Vanille/ was a well written character .. with a rather poor voice actress.

I hope they make more like it besides that one complaint.

So there.
BBCode is fun, instead of doing those ugly slashes around words, you can do this!

Vanille

To do that, type in [ i]Vanille (or whatever word you want)[/i], but without the space in the first bracket group.

Simply, back to when it was good. Back to the beloved turn-based systems. Back to when they were fantasy games rather than sci-fi. I prefer swords and sorcery over dull techno hipsters with strange sword-like contraptions. (I mean seriously wtf is that thing lightning is slinging around?)

Take it to hell, get an indistructible safe and make it sink to the bottom of the magma pits... I do think advent children was good though...

They could stop. I mean come on, the only game i can think of with a bigger number on the end is madden, and even that game may have had more new and original thoughts for each installment then Square did. EA- "Hey lets make some achievements based on traits or circumstances of certain players" (Ok, the didnt have any game altering thoughts, but at least they tried)
Square- "Hey lets make an angsty bisexual hero that carries a huge sword called 'the overcompensator'"

That's gotta be tough when your flagship game becomes the subject of that much ridicule. You ever love it, or you never would have. I personally won't buy it because of how linear I hear it is, but will happily borrow it from a friend.

This could just be me, essentually a westerner, speaking, but for sake of the Final Fantasy franchise, maybe it would benefit Square-enix to look BACK on what Squaresoft did to make FF1-6 work so great. JRPGs in general need a lot of help, as far as the west is concerned, but that doesn't mean Final Fantasy can't revert back to its roots. Flash and shininess just isn't cutting it. Some real fundimental changes need addressing if Square-Enix is going to salvage the Final Fantasy name.

Back to basics; we need a FF game with a decent battle system (preferably a spin on turn-based IMO) where we start off as a fresh faced hero, battle monsters, get upgrades from the towns along the way and finish with a great boss. I'd rather have customisation in the characters too, like assigning attribute points or at least being able to branch off into different skills

For me, the Final Fantasy series has always been about story. Even back when the battle system was nothing more than a simple turn-based jrpg system I still played for the story. I didn't care that it was linear because I viewed it as an interactive novel. So personally, I'd be glad if they just focused on making really solid stories and characters rather than trying to reinvent themselves.

I love the FF series, and I didn't like 13 at all. Maybe it's not such a bad idea to put the series to bed. Maybe if they do something else entirely, they can avoid becoming stagnant.

How about taking it somewhere that doesn't suck?

I think what they need to do is look at all aspects of how they want to represent JRPGs to the world. FF is one of the premiere games being released out of Japan, and if anyone could begin sweeping changes in that genre, Square-Enix could. The story isn't typically the problem, but rather the character design and turn based battle system. I'm sick of seeing flagrant metrosexuals representing JRPG characters just as much as I hate battle systems that rely on luck rather than skill. Also, LESS ANGSTY TEENS!

Its probably been said a million times, but the only logical progression of final fantasy games is to simply have it so when you click New Game a 50 hour cinnematic plays.

I just wanted to add in I hated the battle system... best way to win a fight is to hit the X (or accept based on whatever console you played on) over and over and over...

Seriously I felt like they put a dunce hat on me... Also I only bought the game for the ffxiv code! Even then I liked a bit of the story but not all of it the battle system kept screwin with me...
