Star Wars...Why should I see it?

Honestly Ill go against the grain and say.. you shouldnt bother.

Honestly.. Starwars is the epitome of overhype.

Thing of it is even star wars fans predominantly dislike the prequel trilogy, and alot seem to think Jedi was phoned in and no where near as good as the prior 2, so in the scheme of things all these fans who adore the franchises are willing to forgive a 2 out of 6 hit/miss ratio.

If there is any reason to watch the films, it would be in preparation for the release of ToR, which I suspect is going to be fairly big and will attract a following outside of the starwars fanbase. So it helps to better understand the backstory, but honestly you would be better served playing KOTOR I & II than watching the films.

They are alright films, No where near deserving of the hype they get, but solid films in their own right and honestly, there are worse things to see, like, I dunno, watching anything from M. Night Shamalamadingdong (Even though I could forgive the "absolutely no rewatch value of the films, and some turds like the happening, but I will never be able to forgive the guy after child raping The last Airbender)

They have a pretty decent plot, pretty cool visual effects. You can see how special effects were done before the age of computer generated images of everything onto a black background. Likeable characters with background. Most movies don't have that now.

If you liked 1,2,3(Thats the modern ones) 4,5,6 Is much better in every way except the cgi

Pluss sith Imperial march, most epic song ever.

I'm no sw fan either.

I'll answer your question with a question -- why should I try to convince you to watch something you have no interest in watching? You probably know enough about these movies to know weather or not you'd like them; nothing I (or anyone else) would say is likely to change that.

By the time I had first seen star wars, I already knew the plot of the entire trilogy, and the prequels, from all the references popular culture makes to it.

Though still, lightsaber battles are always cool.

For the time the special effects shaped the future of how movies did visuals...
The plot is basic, the actors click, good vs evil...

But you have no interest in it, which confuses me. Why say you know what you want and not want to watch then ask the escapist forums to convince you? That's like posting a thread "Toast, I hate toast, I don't want toast, had toast as a kid. Convince me to have toast again."

More and more I just enjoy something for what it is, what it was for its time is also a important factor.

because you have to imagine not to have seen such super video effects like in the new ones. if you have seen such HD quality you wont be that amused by watching the "4th, 5h and 6th" episode of star wars hexology.

This sentence is like saying George Foreman was the worst thing to happen to the George Foreman grill. You do know that George Lucas wrote Star Wars, right?
He changes and butchers his own work so much he should be taken away and shot. Plus episodes 1 2 and 3... just no.
It is sad when he talks about his new content in 4-6 how he never got to do what he wanted with the technology of the time...

So this man who made these movies that impacted a culture did so on accident and if he had his way they would have been as bad if not worse than Flash Gordon.

I'd advise you to start with Episode 1.
Thats the worst advice anyone has ever given anyone else. Start with episode 4, ignore 1, 2 and 3 they should never of happened
First of all, it's "should have". Second of all, watching the story in chronological order makes sense.
It makes sense, sure, but only when you don't know what films are being talked about. 1, 2 and 3 are remarkably lame. The original trilogy held up better without them. Attack of the Clones is the closest to decency in the prequels.

And to the OP, because they are just great films. That is all.

Simple answer: don't.

Leave Star Wars to the "nerds" and enjoy criticizing the series in blissful ignorance. Then you can get a job on FoxNews telling "concerned parents" that Star Wars is "porn" or something...
[/troll]
I'm sorry I had to do that.

In answer to the question, yes, "Just Because". You clearly know every plot point and major twist in the story, wouldn't you like to know how they all fit together? Then, regardless of whether you liked or disliked the movies, you can enjoy the Robot Chicken and Family Guy Star Wars parodies on a deeper level: either for their brilliant satire or roasting of the "sacred cow". I'd say that's worth about 12 hours of your time (assuming you watch all 6 movies).

PS: As a bit of advice, watch the original series first. The "prequel trilogy" was written for audiences that have grown up with Star Wars, and seeing them first will be less dramatic.

PPS: Controversy: Han shot first! f you, editors! heh

I watched the first three movies just about a year ago and I used to watch them all the time as a child.

I understood and appreciated them so much more as a 25 year old. Empire really is a masterpiece. Vader's dark image casually drawing a red lightsaber at the end invokes way more emotion and tension than any of the outlandish fight scenes in the prequels.

If the idea of watching a solid, well done sci fi movie isn't motivation enough, then just don't. Forget about it being a landmark, or important, or anything like that. Don't go into it expecting it to change your life, because it almost certainly won't.

Bottom line, if you need a reason other than "It's really pretty good, according to most people," then there's no reason for you to watch it.

Eh, they weren't that great. If you've got time to kill, go ahead--but try and get one of the first edition video cassette tapes, because the 70's vibe was the best part of those movies.

Understand that it's Style over Substance. For sheer iconic, genre defining settings, tongue-and-cheek (albeit sometimes flat) dialogue, characters you genuinely care for, Star Wars can't be beat. Atmosphere is the main attraction I think. It coats every screaming tie fighter, every clunky old starship, every familiarly humming light saber, every ominous black Imperial command center and every iconic line that reminds you of a dozen parodies and references of that scene.

It's just pretty cool, is all.

I say give it a shot, itf worth it. I mean I HATE the movies, but I LOVE the universe as a whole. I just didn't like the whole story Lucas did. Just wasn't for me, but the comics/games are a different story.

To gain deepened understanding of the entire sci-fi genre. Star Wars opened up so many doors... every sci-fi film after that trilogy has SOMETHING to owe it.

Also... it's awesome. I mean, really. Lightsabers. X-Wings. Darth Vader. Come on, dude. ;-)
You forgot Boba Fett

OT:Its one of the greatest Sci Fi movies ever made

Because they're highly enjoyable (all of them bar AotC are actually, so fuck you prequel-haters!) and it's so] ingrained into popular culture.

Even if you know that a gag or line is a throwback to Star Wars, it's still worth watching them to get everything.

Ah, but you see, George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, is not allowed to have his own vision of what happens in the Star Wars universe - that's the universe he created, did I mention that? - any more because some people don't like parts of it that he has added or VERY BLOODY SLIGHTLY retconned*.
